Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

Longer coats!! Love the length on the madras jacket. Hides so many imperfections.

Weatherford, there's an Irish breeches manufacturer called TallyHo that has a whole line of stretch, flaired breeches. They are not too expensive either, and the quality is up to field hunting standards.

TallyHo has a website somewhere in Ireland. You can order directly from them off the net.

Just My Style, there were two show grounds close to where I lived, Thompson Park in Jamesburg, NJ and Johnson's Park in New Brunswick. They both had big wonderful outside courses with solid fences that really made you have to ride forward.

Sadly, Thompson Park has now turned what used to be a permanent show grounds into a permanent soccer field and I really dont know the status of Johnson's Park as I have not been back to NJ is many, many years.

I don't think anyone has wished for this -

NO SCHOOLING OVER THE JUMPS PRIOR TO THE SHOW!

Remember when you had to go in and do a course of fences your horse "GASP" had not SEEN yet?

Thge idea being to see which horses were the real honest ones and who had done their homework BEFORE the show.

That could be brought back - yes it would require some creativity and extra work for the course designers and jump crew -

And Weatherford - YES they have done some hunter classes in the BIG ring for the Amateurs - using the bank and all the space - very few related distances. A course of 13 elements and you needed to ride at a forward pace...

The first year at Biltmore - they had a fabulous Equitation course for the Adults - there was a bending line with no measurement on the course chart - you should have seen the number of amateurs running for their trainers asking "how many strides"

I second the "old style jackets" too.

Longer, and with a single vent. SOOO much more flattering for those of us who actually have hips!!

How about some Handy Hunter courses, and honest to goodness jumper courses of the 80's.
Or better yet Rust colored breeches. Eek

Six bar classes for the jumper ring. Now those were the days.

I may be showing my age (and, perhaps, my ignorance), but I remember the days of local member shows, where you competed at the "real" fence height for your division -- e.g., 3' Children's and Adults and 3'6" Juniors and Amateurs. Also, the local show (replaced now by the hazily-defined "C" show) wasn't inundated with thousands of mind-numbing 2'6" courses populated by professionals, thus allowing adults and amateurs to finish on time to properly enjoy cocktail hour -- and show in the daylight. To top it off, the best jumping horses actually won!

Hurrah for Madras and white linen coats! Anybody want to buy mine? And canaries - I've still got a pr of wool hand stitched ones - very itchy but great for real hunting in cold weather. I still have patent boot tops on my old hunt boots, which bring them up to the present stylish height. Remember no knee rolls, no saddle pads in the show ring (esp for Corinthian classes), sewn in bits? I have a nice hard derby with cord which I don't wear. Real outdoor courses to gallop on are the best though. As somebody has said, just go hunting.

                          Basset and LBH,

That magnet comes from a group of greeting cards called Stiffs Greeting cards manufactured by twistedyarns.co.uk, I found a local distributor and ordered a set of the cards that you have in magnet version. The pictures on all the cards are taken from sweater advertisements in the 50's. They are a real hoot. Although the one you have is the only horsey one.

Johnson Park is Middlesex right? My mare used to always stop at the first or second fence (going away from the ingate), but if you could make it through the first half, hang on because the second half made the Preakness look slow. I for one am happy to have discovered the warmbloods over all the hot TBs of yesteryear.

Do you remember that they used to print the prizelist and then print a book with all of the competitors? And the champion ribbons were gorgeous!

One more thing to add- I wish they would stop splitting the darn classes. "Oh no. We have 12 people. Not everyone will get a ribbon. Split the class." UGH! I remember being 1st out of 80 in short stirrup at Middlesex. They didn't split the class- even though it took several hours. Let's go back to not splitting the classes.

Oh and let's start enforcing the two minute rule again. What is it with these primadonnas that school for 20 minutes while the class is being held. Hello? You knew your class was scheduled to go. You couldn't have warmed up sooner? Your trainer doesn't have time management skills to fit in all of their students? In the "olden days" they would have closed the class on you!

The bridles didn't have buckles or any other way to remove a bit; the leather that held the bit was sewn together.

My first show at age 3. Too small for conventional riding attire, so my mother took an old pair of my brother's plaid pants (1966 you know) and made me some fabbo flared jods.

I remember one particulary tough New Jersey outside course, I think it might have been Jr. Essex Troop or Hunt Cap. One year after a lot of rain you had to practically swim through a creek to even get to it. That and the course going through the woods also totally undid my mare.

My number one wish would be people getting to the ring on time, I nver remember rings empty for fifteen minutes at a time. Although in contrast to the other posters, I do remember lots of low classes, they were just named different things, Maiden thorugh Limit Eq, Maiden through Limit Hunter, Pleasure divisions, and Non TB hunter. They had these divisions even at the A shows.

I'm not saying lower fences are bad, in any way, but the prevalence of classes with teensy fences makes me wonder if we are losing our collective nerve?

I am finding that a lot too!

                                          I have 4 theories:

VetOne reason may be b/c a vet approves a vet check but adds that the horse should stick to No more than 2'9"... therefor the owner's stick them in at 2'6" to not over do it!

Young horses, We think to ourselves... "Let's save their legs" and only do the 2'3" division... and next year I'll do 2'9" when they are a year older...

Amateurs. An amateur comes out of horsey retirement, and doesn't want to compete in a REAL adult division, as they cant find their distances as well, and although their horse may be a winner on a day with a Pro... they are just getting back into the swing of things...

Go to a schooling show you say? Lots of times, their barn just ships the whole barn to the "A" show, so you gotta go wherever the trailer goes!

Income for Trainers I found this was the case when I had my first horse. Instead of encouraging us to move up in the divisons throughout the year, we did the 2'3"-2'6" division the WHOLE year, (8-9 shows?)... and the next year did the 2'9"-3'0"... I think it guaranteed her show clients for an extra year! After that, we would go on to a higher circuit besides schooling shows, and the clients usually moved barns then!
