Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Fess up - who has a hidden horse or two?

My sister hid two from our parents. She lived at home. They thought she had one, but she had three. She should have hidden them from her boyfriend. When they got married, he made her sell them. I'm surprised they are still married. That would have been a deal breaker for me.It's 2018. Do you know where your old horse is?

Hey, it works both ways for us....he brings home a new "yellow" Ski-Doo and doesn't tell me...the old one was yellow too, so I never noticed until he fessed up. Then there's his boat....I think there has been three of "the same" boats in our yard over the past couple of years...to me, they all look the same, and he only fesses up after I've had a beer or two and he knows I won't over-react! Been married 24 years, so it seems to work for us!!!

exactly.. not so much hiding/lying (that is wrong imo), but if it never comes up in discussion...Originally posted by nevertoolate View PostI'm really surprised at the number of folks who have hidden horses! I've hidden horses from hubby that were rescues and I intended to rehome. I don't condone keeping things from the significant other, but he would give me an argument even though it was my money being spent and the horse was going to have a bad end. I do cat rescue, and don't hide cats from him. We have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, and I also prefer to foster black cats cause he usually doesn't realize it's not the same feline. Actually, I have hidden in plain sight some personal felines in the house by bringing in solid black or solid red tabby cats.

All I know is this thread truly cracks me up.
I know...if I'm hopeful of a horsey event...I try to keep it on the down low, and plan and save. (just because husband is NOT horsey and feels its all an extravagence) and...often, it doesn't work out: friends can't go, weather craps out...so I save the arguments for when they're needed....Now, that said, we don't show anymore...(right now) and I'm talking about the once a year trail ride trip....(!)
Would I 'hide' an actual full sized living breathing eating pooping board costing horse from him? Gawd, no. Who could do that well ? but...I guess those who are in the biz and have multiples might consider their actions on the same scale as my 'protecting' my one/two fun trips a year!
the paint owner whose husband thinks she has the best versatile 'one horse' is just a priceless story. BUAHAHA!!!!!ayrabz

Sometimes I wish I had thought of embezzling family funds for my habit—the arguments that erupt over the occasional two- or three-figure equine bill are an agony! But no, honesty is important. We may not prioritize the same things, but we both deserve to know what the other's spending money on. This is the Truth!Originally posted by cnvh View PostIt bears mentioning that my husband probably THINKS I have two or ten horses based on the amount of tack/whatnot that I have, but I swear, it's just one!!!
And, I'm with the Others on this issue. I don't hide horses... although I did call one a "pony" a few years ago when it arrived. (it was a very young arabian, and about the size of our existing pony...so, it all worked out!).

LOL too funny! I don't have a "hidden" horse but I doubt my DH actually knows that we paid money to lease her.
That said, I did just speak to someone recently who was hiding a pony from her husband. She said "he's a roan, he looks just like the other one I have, I'm pretty sure DH won't notice unless they are both out next to each other" LOL

My SO spends m more time at the farm than me and I know he couldn't tell you how many horses are there or how many are mine!
He knows the ponies cause they have been around forever (he even knows their names!), and he may know my tbs (one causei was beyond excited to get her and the other because he was almost starved).
However I have three more, and even though they are the most remarkable in terms of color (a leopard appy, a palomino, and a palomino pinto), he couldnt tell you which were mine, or their names.
He told me yesterday I should have a BOGO sale and get rid of all of them except the ponies. Don't think he realizes all except for the tbs are technically ponies!

One time, when I was away, I asked my hubby to bring in the TB, the one that is all dark brown and has no white on it..he brought in the sorrel paint with white legs past his knees, white butt, white face....the brown ones all stayed out...the paint was happy as can be, all tucked away in the stall. When I got home, I of course said "WTF!" and hubby said " well, how I am I expected to know the difference?" Gotta love him, but geez...."Anti-intellect and marketing, pretty, pretty, who needs talent

Who doesn't?
My first horse I hid from my parents, my third and fourth I hid from my husband.
The third was a wobbler though. He knew I had a mare and from her age should have figured out that there was a foal being boarded 'somewhere' I was sneaky and put her in a pasture in a different state 300+ miles away to grow up.3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375 10582097494459230781640628620899862803482534211706 79821480865132823066470938446095505822317253594081 284811174502841027019385.....

My DH helps me too much with mine to ever hide one from him. I know he would definitely notice if I had a different one, or another, on the nights he turns out for me while I am at work. I do have to say though, that I did hide the fact that I did put up part of the money for my DD's pony. He thinks that her Nana really wanted her to have a pony

I will say that it use to be "don't ask don't tell' until ice hockey came around for my son, and his coach and team "manager" Mr. Stolen. Well, no more ! Ice hockey expenses far exceed the second horse, I opened the credit card bill in mr stolen's name only.
I feel free now, no guilt, no shame, my daughter and I stay home and take care of the other pets. I feel I should be charging the hockey players for staying home "house sitting".

I have never hidden a horse, but I have played down how much I pay in board a month. I think if my SO knew I wouldn't hear the end of it. I all ready get a lecture every time something on my car needs to be fixed, or something around the house needs to be fixed that I shouldn't spend so much money on the horses and instead spend it on fixing stuff!Maggie Bright, lovingly known as Skye and deeply missed (1994 - 2013)
