Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

You can set up a paypal account specifically for this and a link for donations. I'd be glad to help organize it as well, or do anything I can be of assistance for from GA... I have small children, so unfortunatly cannot hit the road, but I'd love to help.

I would be willing to hit to road. I have a 2H trailer and I am sure I can get my truck loaded with hay and some feed (my feed store is nice enough i think they would donate it) and get over there, I was thinking about this this morning on how we could help those poor people and horses. We can take probubly 5 or so here between my mom and I, maybe more at my uncles place. My email is beavercreek_ranch@yahoo.com let me know we are willing to help in ANY way we can. I would be going without my husband so anyone without a trailer and wants to go can ride with me. I will speak with the feedstore this afternoon about donating some stuff IF we go. We are right where I-10 and I-75 cross in Florida and just about can leave on a moments notice.

Thanks neomom, I sent you a PM.

We'll put you on the list beavercreekranch!

nattie's godmother, I think that if you want to send supplies right now you could try calling Alabama, Mississippi, or Louisiana Ag. Depts. to see if you could send supplies to them directly. If they can't handle your stuff, I bet they know who can

AFAIK there's not, yet, and I was just thinking there probably needs to be. I wish I could volunteer for that but I have a minuscule apt. and an even more minuscule car, so probably a bad idea.

Maybe if one person could volunteer to gather up stuff in each state that is sending members to the convoy??

My truck's not reliable enough and I can't get away. But if anybody's heading west from Lexington, KY way and wants to stop by my place, I can load you up with at least 50 bales of hay- mostly fescue. I'm about 10 miles off the Western KY parkway. PM me for directions or call my cell phone 270 735 7777.

I'm in Ft Walton Beach, FL and that could have been us yesterday. It HAS been us (Opal, Ivan, Dennis, etc)and we've been mightily inconvenienced and also faced with big unexpected reconstruction expenses, so I can just begin to comprehend what they're going through in AL, MS and LA. But we haven't lost our home or our loved ones or our beloved animals and thus we have not been through disaster on the scale that those folks are experiencing. It's almost too much to wrap my brain around. I'm not in a position to take in homeless horses or to travel over there myself but I'm ready to donate cash to the effort once the logistics of donating are put into place. I'm encouraging all of my horse-owning friends to do likewise. And please also consider donating to the American Red Cross. Those poor people are going to need everything and they're going to need it for a very long time. It's very simple to make an on-line donation at their website: https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

I think that you're probably better off sending money to charities (either rescues in the area or national groups) than sending actual goods. The logistics of getting stuff to people who need it are hard enough without having to deal with small parcels of things coming from individuals.

And although PayPal does have reduced fees for charities, I have a feeling that you would have to have 501c3 status to qualify. What would probably work best, when we get to that point, is just to have people "donate" directly to individuals.

And funds from PayPal accounts can be transferred into a bank account within a few business days, so yes, it is (almost) "real" money.

Y'all are bringing tears to my eyes here.... and thats not something an old fat man likes to admit!.

I will be taking my large trailer. It is 41 feet long tri-axle and can haul 5 horses plus cargo. It also has a dressing room and all the space over the gooseneck for crates with small animals if need be. It will probably hold 150 or so bales of hay and if we pack it right maybe another 1 and 1/2 or 2 tons of bagged feed. This means we need a lot to fill it up so ask everyone you know to donate please.

beavercreekranch, when the time comes I would love to convoy with you. There is safety and security in numbers. Anyone else in central Florida is welcome to join in and run over there with us. We can set up meeting places along I-75 and I-10.

My vet has donated a big old box of stuff.... butte, banamine, eye ointment, etc, etc. I contacted the newsletter editor of our GMO (STRIDE in Ocala) and she sent out an alert e-mail to all our members. I am already getting back responses.

I have set up a drop off point for donations including cash at Horsin' Around Tack Shop on Highway 40 just West of I-75 in Ocala. It is in the strip mall next to Berettini (sp) Feed and Hay. The owners name is Corolla and she will see all donations made there get to me to be used for relief efforts.

One bit of advice for those making the trip... We don't know what conditions we will be working under so it would be wise to update your tetanus shots (Thanks for reminding me beastieslave, I got mine today at a local walk in clinic). Also pack a personal first aid kit (bandages, betadine, bacitracin, gauze, etc) for your own use. I'll try to put together a list of what you should have in your truck and trailer.

I just received a phone call.... one of our GMO members has donated $150 to be used for fuel, food, or whatever is needed to help. She can not make the trip but just wanted to help. She said she has horses and the storm might come here next..

We have a 5 acre grassy field that could support 2 or 3 horses for a month or two. They would have no roof over their heads and would have to eat together (get along well).

I will also send a notice out to our Dressage/Eventing club etc.

I think this is generally true and that's why I made a cash donation to the Red Cross. They can assess the needs and use the cash to purchase what is needed most. Assuming there is "stuff" in the affected area that can be purchased, this also has the much needed effect of bringing income into the affected area. The Red Cross also has its own distribution network and can use that to get supplies in from other areas if the items can't be purchased near the site of the disaster, However, it's a different story for bringing aid to horses. I don't think horsemen are going to have access to any large-scale distribution network. Also, my guess is we're going to see much devastation of the acreage devoted to growing hay in AL, MS and LA. For these reasons it may be very necessary to truck in large quantities of hay from other states just to keep animals alive.

When our 4-h group coordinated relief after Floyd we had a central drop off given to us by a county official[it was a church] and one of the only buildings above water and roadway accessable.Anyway I wnted to add this thought. When you are asking the vets or tractor supply and southern states] for donations see if they will agree to send along vacs as mosquito's and the nasty illness they carry will become prevailent[sp].I am sure many of you do your own vacs and I understand you may not want to "stick" someone elses horse .Like I said it is a thought to put out there.oh and a smal boat may not be a bad idea if going to a flooded area ,several dogs were saved and even a few horses "lead" out by small watercraft.
Look forward to donating to the effort.

Keep in mind that after storms like this it is really hard to get local shavings from mills etc. Even if you have the $$$ to buy shavings and hay it can be real hard to get them localy and get it to some area's. I do not know how any of us can help with that, but I have been there and done that. It is a real PITA even way after things start to clean up. Any Ideas???

I have a feeling that covoys of supplies will be heading into the area when things settle down a bit.

I'm sure there are loads of COTH'ers who would be happy to take part in either purchasing items for companies to send directly to relief efforts (hopefully along with the things the companies will be donating) or by adding to or loading up trucks full of stuff to take.

I know when we had widespread flooding in our area, there were many groups that sent relief trucks for people. They were full of clothes, food, personal hygiene stuff, water, cleaning supplies... We could be sure something like that happens for horses!

I'm trying to get a handle on the things they will need right away. I think right now they need to be able to move horses and have basic supplies - feed, water, first aid, halters, leads, knowledgable people.

Probably by the weekend they will be looking for hay, more feed, fence supplies, buckets, vaccinations, shavings, etc.

I keep thinking back some years when we were having a drought in GA (late 80's?). I remember seeing trucks loaded with hay driving through Atlanta with big signs saying where they had been sent from. They had wonderful messages of hope and it's making me cry now to think of it... I'd love to be able to be part of that type of relief effort.
