Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Leena - Thanks for the compliment. My photos don't do his jump justice as I always seem to get only the so-so fences. He is a Hanoverian Graf Gotz x Wunder.

    • Well my 4 year old is very excited in this fall weather he dances around to be tacked up, then once the ride is over he is asleep on cross ties. He has bonded a lot with me and feels the need to carry on if I leave him for 2 minutes. Undersaddle he nis learning to use his but and cary his huge ego around not on his front end. It is starting to have moments of really nice movement, canter is ok at this point with trot getting lovely at times. We have joined a group jumping lesson Saturday mornings with 5 other people, we have had so wild rides I feel lucky to be doing this now and not in warm up at a show as he gets majorly excited and does a buck/spin/kick thins in excitement. Once he has wored for 45 minutes he starts to mellow and doesnt get stressed about all the horses, but those first minutes are...fun. He trail rides like a champ and loves cross country, he has a huge round jump. He is going to be an amazing horse when he matures.

        • Update on my 4 yo. He just arrived in Batavia OH for the 30 day stallion test, today! The trainer has been working him 6 days a week in preparation for the test. I know it has been hard on him, but he will get a little time off when he returns in 30 days. I'm very pleased with his progress. He is jumping small courses of fences, galloping X-C, and doing training level dressage. Keeping my fingers crossed for a good outcome...

          • I had not been able to take Brain ti school cross country since my trailer was damaged in May.

But I got my NEW trailer on Thursday, and took Mr. Brain to FPP today (meeting up with Gegi who helped with the schooling, and running into ETBW and Trixie just starting out as we were finishing up).

Anyway, he was an absolute trooper.

If I could establish and keep a good rhythm, we got a GREAT jump. And even when we lost the rhythm, he kept going and got over safely, even if ot as elegantly.

We did the Novice ditch, and most of teh BN fences.

Downhill still needs a bit of balancing at the canter (I plan to trot the downhill fences at Foxcroft in 2 weeks). But the height didn't bother him, nor the looks of the fence. He was a little bit concerned about teh sheep in the cow pasture, but dealt with it ably.
ANd I love my new trailer.

            • Royal Blue-Very nice horse again ! As he matures, he will better and better I am sure.

              Oakleigh- Good luck !

I went at the inspection of Canadian Sport horse today and while speaking with Mr. Henselwood, he told me the Association had raised his requirements for Stallion to 70% and plus over marks.
So 4 Stallions were inspected and only one was approved.

Keep on the good work ! Is anybody had this but my mare was 15.2 hands at 3 and now she at 16 hands. Warmblood are that slow growers ????

              • Oooh, a clique I can join! I'm new to the board, so missed the original posting of this thread. I have a 4 year old Breeding stock paint. Right now his withers are at about 15.2 hands and his hips are at about 16 or 16.1. Needless to say, I hope he has a lot of growing left to do! He went to a trainer for 30 days last summer, and mainly did a lot of trail riding. He went to another trainer this past summer for three months and learned walk, trot, and canter. She did everything on a loose rein and just taught him to accept stuff. His canter is very fast and unbalanced though, so since I got him back I've been just walking and trotting him, getting him used to contact and trying to encourage him to use his hind end.

I also had to deal with moving him from Ohio to New Jersey. Fortunately I've found a great instructor that's worked with a lot of young horses before, so she'll be able to guide us as we pursue my goal to become eventers. I have taken him over teeny jumps (about 6 inches tall) and he seems to really enjoy it. Actually, the last time I did it we trotted to the jump and cantered away and he had a really, really nice canter. I haven't asked him for a canter in a while though, so maybe his canter is like that in general now. I'm not worrying about it yet because there's so much to do at the walk and trot.

He has been to a couple of shows for exposure, just showing walk trot. I'm hoping he'll be ready for some w/t/c shows in the spring. But if he's not, that's ok, I don't want to push him too fast, and he was born late June and still growing lots, so I can afford to give him the time he needs to grow up. It's been fun reading about everyone else's four year olds...you can see pictures of Jake at www.jesterjigger.com

I'm glad this thread bounced up to page 1 again... I've been MEANING to post pictures of my 4-year-old PMU mare Unique Blonde (Nique). We are still making slow steady progress. She had her feet trimmed last weekend without sedative (only her second trim since her arrival... for the first, she was nearly untrimmable WITH sedative). I'm really enjoying her -- teaching and learning at the same time. Here she is!

                  • Yak is officially "on the market" for 2005 breeding season.

We're planning on Ocala in February to do the Pre-Greens, and are getting all the loose ends tied up in his training (which isn't hard since he was born broke )

While doing the free portion of his STUD video, I grabbed a still (if you play on the HB forum, you've seen it before ).

I'm excited about next show season!!! He is going to Cornell soon to learn how to "use" a phantom.
I gotta do-over and am doin it my way!!!

I am officially nuts! (long unofficially so - ha ha) My barn buddy, who happens to be the activities director at a local high school, has convinced me that she and I need to be flag-bearers at her school's homecoming game. As in mounted on horseback, galloping around the track!
We've practiced at home with no fireworks whatsoever. Oddly, Chase could care less about the flag, and my friend's horse is fine with the whole thing, too. Both of them seemed to regard it as "just another stupid human idea." I really pushed the issue, too, to see if I could get a reaction - picking up the flag and putting it down from horseback, letting it flap over his head, over his rump, under his tummy - nothing. very odd behavior for a 4 yo. So far, my biggest problem was keeping the end of the flag out of Chase's mouth - he still hasn't gotten over that "Hmm...new thing, must taste it" syndrome. We did manage to spook several horses riding past the arena, though - oops! All the kids at the barn were disappointed, I think, that my friend and I didn't put on a better show. Some of them do rodeo color guard, so they gave us great tips.
Now, mind you, I know we're not out of the woods just by practicing at home! What I'm worried about is Chase getting excited about the event. It will be dark, with stadium lights, marching band, loudspeaker and cheering crowds. And what does he do when he gets excited? Yes, he throws in a BIG buck! I will tighten the strap on my helmet! Let's hope it goes well and that I do not get dumped off and desecrate the flag!

His structure is also just getting huge, I had just bought him new Gygax boots back in March (he had been wearing his brothers hand me downs) & last week I had to purchase a larger set - couldn't get the older ones on for the life of me. I am dreading pulling out his blankets as I know that they'll be way too small.

                        • My turn ... My 4 yr old has had an interesting but slow year ... We had him aiming for the hunter ring and took him to FHEE starter trials for exposure ... Well OMG, my little boy is an eventer ... Schooled once over some longs, he went over and stole the show ... Up a foundation without a second thought, one refusal at the water than almost insisted to his rider that he MUST stay in, it was just TOO much fun, I was SOOOOOOOOOOOO proud of my baby boy ...

He's had a week off and now looks as though he'll be heading into MD for a couple weeks of board with his rider before his first recognized ON event @ Waradaca and his last run of the year @ Plantation Field Oct. 30th. Then home to me (who should be able to ride again, was able to until I went on vacation, don't even get me started, lol) for light hacks and dressage work until winter puts a halt on training and back to MD in the spring to train, campaign, and be sold to a lucky young rider or small adult.

Its amazing how 4 yr olds can differ. His brother was a holy terror @ age 4. Magic, well he acts as though he's "been there/done that", what a sweetie ...

Check out pics @ My Babies

Just updated for his eventing pics, should be up in about 45 minutes or so ... Gotta jet, talk to you all later ...

                          • Royal Blue, this is interesting. I know how they widen from 3 to 5 but I did not know they could get higher. This is for me very important since I am tall and 15.2 was a little bit short.

So I am going to ride a little and especially trying to improve that big big canter !!!!

Leg yield, well I would say probably a 8.

My mare had to respect my leg and get going on it. This one request to understand every single move, otherwise...niet. Miss Prissy is stoping, ears pins, etc.

MY Miss Priss...seems to have forgotten that she has already showed training level or at least she has forgotten that her and I used to know w-t-c...as you know we have been having the same issues you mention above...

we took her to trainers place on Sat and she was great.....for trainer....I got on and we have discovered it is all about my position.. if I straighten elbows she stops if my lower leg slides forward she stops...at least we are no longer ear pinning and kicking....

so we are working on WALK...lots and lots of walk....she is till quite PMS like when things are not quite right but she is getting better....trainer says I was crazy to think I would not have any steps backwards....says I may not be able to trot for 2 more weeks but then we will get past it and thigs will look better....

boy do I hope she is right!

                                    • Step backwards.....Castlegate I have found out some does and some does not.
They have a sort of Please the rider's bubble and when they come out of it, they resist on almost everything.
Rider's seat, leg demand are very very important. Carrying weight on their back is one thing, but when it feels like a big potatoes bag...well it might upset them.

I would not walk for 2 weeks. I would start to get leg demand clear, let's say one pressure, two pressure and if no answer, then whip. Stop and do it again. No seat demand, just leg. I found seat demand are mixing up her more than anything. I would trot one circle at the time. Maybe one every session, the 2 and keep it gradual.

I found my mare has to understand when she is doing right and doing wrong.

I work with outside reins, steady seat and I demand from my legs; no answer then whip, whip very quick. When she does move on I relax my leg.

I want her to move on without my leg support or seat support, so if she slows down I whip.

Somebody on the board told me once that the more stuburn they are to train, the better they are after. Especially when they are intelligent.

I hope this is true !
