Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • I'm a horseless rider in Blacksburg, VA. I'm Senior at Virginia Tech. I have ridden hunter, western and now I'm concentrating on dressage. I've done some very basic training and working with behavioral problems. I won't be too picky about what the horse does, because I just want to be on the back of a horse. I have my own tack for all three disciplines. I was free leasing a mare from a friend but I was running out of money for that. I would like a horse that has some experience on trails, but if not that's ok. I can give references if you like. Please let me know if you have anything that needs to be ridden!! Thanks!

    • North of Boston. I have a pretty, widebody draft pony (think My Little Pony) 13.3H, loves everyone, easy to ride, has just started back into work after a bout of Laminitis. She would love to be walked through the trails behind our farm a couple of times a week. Also a really cool Shire schooled to 1st level but is currently being ridden 1-2x a week. He could use another ride each week.

I had the same thought. But I'm a bit far south, and between them dear SO and my farmsitter have the easier horses covered.

Any experienced riders east of Columbus? Western, English, even have a couple getting ready for their first horse trial...

                  • Three (semi)-riderless horses available in Middleburg, VA - Like so many of us, I have more horses than time.....

1 - older mare, doesnt' really need to be worked, but if there are any horseless riders out there who just want to hack around, this is a very safe horse, a babysitter.

2 - 9-YO QH gelding, has been off for a year, but I now need to get him back into light work - think trail riding.

3 - 11-YO TB mare, I need help getting her fit for hunting. She is a more advanced ride than the other two, and the correct fit, personality-wise, is important.

I live in Middleburg Hunt territory, have great trails, and access to an outdoor ring down the road. Anyone interested, please contact me.

                    • Joli - sent you a PM.

And to anyone else in Orange County, CA, I am looking for the right owner/horse for my situation.

My mare is in foal, and is no longer jumping. My trainer has lots of greenies that I ride and do some small jumps with, but I looking for a horse that is ready to go to some local shows so I can keep my competitive juices flowing. Maybe there is an owner out there that can't afford to get show miles on their horse or a sale horse that needs some exposure.

I could potentially half-lease a horse and offset some expenses if it was brought to my trainer's barn (an excellent trainer with a fabulous reputation).

I have lots and lots of experience with young and green horses. I brought my mare from an unbroken 2 year old, to the A/O hunters and won some zone awards with her.

I really know I am going to miss showing and the other horses I have to ride are just not ready to go to shows.

If anyone is interested, send me a PM. Thanks.

                          • I'm a horseless rider in Davis, CA (near Sacramento). I just sold my horse as I'm getting ready to move up to 3'6, and she could not do that. My trainer's lesson horses are all busy, and alas, I am left without anything to ride.

I'd describe myself as an intermediate/advanced rider, although I haven't been riding much lately. Send me an e-mail if you have a horse that needs to be riden in the area!

                              • Jumping on the bandwagon a little late here - I'm a soon-to-be horseless rider in the Boulder, CO area. Have lived in the midwest all my life, but having just graduated college find myself a little nomadic. My horse is staying in Iowa to get some R&R and be hacked by my mom. I'm looking for ways to get my much-appreciated horse time! I've mostly ridden dressage, aside from a foray into IHSA, showed through 2nd schooled through some 4th+ movements on a trainer's horses (no way I'd say I'm a 4th level rider though!). I'd be happy working with anything reasonably safe, even if someone had a companion horse that needed some non-riding attention now and again - I'm just looking for ways to get involved with horses out there. Will probably look for rescue organizations or NAHRA centers as well.
                                Thanks for any leads!

                                • I have a riderless horse in Smyrna, GA. Switch is a rescued QH mare, who stood alone for several years after her owner had a stroke. She has come along well, and after four months of farrier work is sound again. She isn't pretty, has a sway back (she's super super long backed, its genetic), but she is so sweet, and would love someone to love her. She's 14 years old, and green. She hasn't done anything stupid, my 6 year old leads her around the barn. She just needs some time under saddle, the knowledge is there, someone rode her at some point, she just needs to remember the fine points. No kicking, rearing, bucking or anything of the sort. She just chomps the bit a lot and acts confused LOL! If someone had intermediate rider knowledge they'd be fine with her. If you don't want to ride but want to hang around and brush/love that would be fine too! Email me at jmundt06 @ yahoo.com (remove spaces)

                                  • New to posting in the forums - but have been lurking and enjoying you all for a while! I feel like I've gotten to know many of you by reading your posts

I'm want get back into riding and introduce my daughters to the finer art of loving horses! They've only had the opportunity to ride rental horses (which breaks my heart almost every time I take them to do such - I usually can't bring myself to come back to the stabels due to the condition of many of the horses) but I'm hoping to dive head in and teach and learn more about these wonderful creatures!

I owned horses at one time in my life but it seems like a "lifetime" ago LOL. I would love to start spending more time with some horses who just need "more love" in their life - grooming, lunge work, easy riding =) I would love to do some work in the horsie field - I'd be happy as a groom or stablehand but have other talents that might be needed, too! (Volunteering with a local pony club would be an idea, too!)

I'm located in Middle Tennessee about halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga (pretty much an hour from most of the horsie areas in Middle TN) and I'm willing to travel such!

I'd love to meet some of you guys if you're in the area! Otherwise, I look forward to getting to know you all right here!

                                    • Lansdale/Doylestown, PA - I am a petite female seeking a dressage prospect in a small package. Although I am a horse owner of 11 years, and lived on our family farm for 6 years, I am now horseless due to my family relocating to Florida this month while I stay to finish my undergraduate degree. I am currently seeking opportunities to ride and hopefully get back into the show ring. I'm trying to sift through all of the posts and PT you guys, but I also wanted to post myself! Thanks!!

                                      • I'm joining in on this game. I just took a job in Aspen, CO and will be moving out there Oct. 1st. I will most likely have to leave my boys here in Virginia and will miss them terribly. Anyone have some riderless horses in the Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale area? I putz around doing a little bit of everything, but mainly enjoy the trails. I'm an english rider but willing to try some western... if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

                                        • I'm bumping this by re-posting...nothing came out of it for me last time I tried , but it's wonderful to see that it did for some.

So I'm horseless in Maryland and Pennsylvania, depending on the time of year (though I'm back in MD a few times a month anyway). I'm a solid intermediate huntseat rider, and a self-affirmed scaredy cat. Any old pokey ones that need a light hack and a quick pop over a cross-rail would be more to ride then I have now. And I'm short, so ponies (13.2 or bigger) are fine as well. Little beasts that give small children trouble? Call me.

Come on guys, let's keep this going if we can (unless there was a reason it died out...perhaps I'm missing something?)

Oh yes, edited to add that I can also provide references vouching for my competence if necessary.
