Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

As some of you may know, Quincy's owner contacted myspace to have her page pulled. However, it is back up and running. We will not back down for this mare. Updates will be posted on the blog section on a regular basis...

If you were a friend on her page before, please put in a friend request to be added again. We had over 3000 hits in less than a week from all over the world.

Good. I hope they documented everything and he is still able to be prosecuted.

Not surprisingly, Quincy's asshat owner's lawyer is pushing to have the "case dismissed" or "evidence suppressed":

Excerpt from follow-up article in The Horse:

"The attorney representing Elliott Saffran, the Massachusetts man accused of animal cruelty for refusing to euthanize Quincy, his aged, infirm horse, has filed motions to either dismiss the case against Saffran or suppress evidence pertinent to it."

At least now Quincy is no longer suffering, but it breaks my heart to know she did so for so long.

This horse has no value to him, he obviously is not riding it. He has had it forever clearly. He apparently spends a great deal of time keeping this old gal up and moving.

While it may be deemed cruelty, there is a difference between intentional cruelty and unintentional. And we can all argue about which this one is, simply because he is told it is cruely, doesnt mean he has to believe it himself. He may believe he knows the horse better than anyone.

The mare deserves a dignified death without a doubt. It may well be her time or it may not if she is in a different situation. Who knows?

What I do know is this man needs as much help as the horse. I have learned well over the years that in helping the animals, we need to extend our hands to the humans first. In helping them, we help the horses.

This man needs help in letting go. I dont think the money is the problem although I did not read all the back articles, just what is posted here.

Heres hoping what is best for the mare will be what is done.

i personally think - that sunkiss has it right-- some people cant as in they just cant bring themselves to whats needed-- its hard to ame that kind of discission

                    i agree its unintentional
as th e man is paying for medication etc= so its not that he doesnt care the truth is he does- but the mare is old and been his freind for along time possiabl the only family he has

Unfortunately, that was not the case with this man. He didn't provide the pain meds, he was seen kicking the mare to get her up when she was down in her stall- this had nothing to do with a man loving a horse for years and having a hard time letting go.This is about his ego, not about a great love for the horse. She was his property and he could do as he sees fit- that is what this whole issue is about, and wasting money and court time. You and sunkist certainly have an idealistic view of the situation- but are far, far from the truth!

I don't know what will happen in the courts for this owner, but he has a $30,000 bill coming to him from Fairfield Equine hospital for housing and whatever care and compassion they could provide for her.

I couldn't join myspace, tried twice, something about a technical error. I'll see if I can try again later. This case breaks my heart. I don't understand how someone could have an animal obviously in chronic pain and choose to let it continue to suffer. My thoughts will be with this mare until there's a positive update..

Court date update, cross post from Equinesite

I have been requested to cross post this here as an attempt to get as many horse folks to attend the trial as possible:

"For any of you following Quincy's story and those that want to help:
Quincy's new court date is December 4 at Worcester District Court, 9am.
There have been several people who religiously attend each and every hearing. I myself have made the trip several times. After a longggg process, many delays and attempts to have evidence supressed and charges dismissed, a December date in Worcester has been scheduled for a trial date to be set.
The DA in Uxbridge is following this case to Worcester. He is so outraged by the alleged's behaviour, he is determined to follow this case through. There will be a new judge in Worcester, as Uxbridge does not offer jury trials.
                            Why is this important?
Nowhere has precedent been set that makes refusing to end suffering, ignoring euthanization recommendation by multiple vets, a form of abuse. We need to set precedent.
Not only are there allegations of mistreatment and neglect on various occasions, there is the dismissal of multiple professional opinions as to the opinion that the horse is suffering and should be euthanized.
                            What can you do?
Request the day off to attend the hearing where the date will be set for trial. Remember, this is a new judge, and a well versed DA. The more people IN the courtroom wearing our customary purple ribbons, the better. It is a show of strength, a silent show of support for Quincy. We are noticed. Our numbers count. All you need to do is attend, sit quietly, and display your purple ribbon. That's all.
This is important. Very, very important. Quincy is the poster child in this capacity for proper and ethical treatment of animals. It's not like Animal Planets: Animal Cops. The MSPCA is involved, Animal control is involved, the medical facility where she died tried to take control and do the right thing....yet no one could do anything to alleviate Quincy's suffering. She died August 10th, thank heavens, is no longer awaiting a court decision, and enduring pain while the wheels of justice were slowly grinding due to stall tactics, ridiculous attenpts to skew evidence and attempts to have charges dismissed.
Just because she is gone is no reason to stop trying to change what is wrong. Quincy was a fighter and so are we.
We need to set precedent. We need the court to rule that witholding recommended euthanasia is a form of abuse.
                            To help make this happen:
We need YOU on December 4 2008 in Worcester Court. Can you make the time?
                            For more information E-mail: calysgal24@equinesite.com "

Quincy, the abused horse wronged by the MSPCA and her owner

                              Greetings, all

The trial of Quincy's (alleged) abuser is happening this Thursday (February 5) at the Worcester, MA district court house (225 Main Street, Worcester, MA).

Many of the people who have regularly attended the hearings have been subpoenaed to testify. Those testifying cannot be in the courtroom during the trial, which will cut down considerably on the number of people who are sitting in the court room in support of Quincy.

If you are within driving distance of Worcester, please consider joining us. As the previous post mentioned, we have been wearing purple ribbons in the court room, and are most definitely noticed by the judge(s).

The trial will likely take one or two days. Even if you can attend only one day, your presence will be appreciated.

                              Thanks.

I can't be there but I hope there is some justice for Quincy that comes from all of this. I've thought about her often as my mare had the same type of injury Quincy sustained to her knee. Cherry was not nearly as bad off as Quincy and could get around under her own steam.

Every time I went out to see my horse I promised her that I would not allow her to end up like Quincy--in pain, struggling to stay on her feet and crashing head first into the stall boards when she couldn't. When it became clear to me that even with pain medication my dear horse was suffering I had her euthanized because I cared about her and her quality of life.

How a human being can stand by and watch a horse struggle like Quincy must have been struggling yet not do anything about it just boggles my mind! I don't think it had anything to do with love but was all about control....

RIP dear Quincy, old girl. I'm sure my Cherry has found you by now and you two are tearing up the pasture in Heaven....

                                    What's wrong with people?????

                                        Mini-update:

a 6-person (plus one alternate) jury was seated, we got through the testimony of two people (MSPCA officer and veterinarian); a third (stable worker) was still on the stand when court recessed for the day.

Testimony continues tomorrow, and at this point it looks like the trial will continue through Monday, at least.
