Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • HP - Coreene and I just spoke.....YOU DID THE RIGHT THING. Just think, YoYo can take Aero to the committee meeting tonight to see what committee he'll be on (we know of course which one it will be) and then they will all three have a grand time helping Aero get acquainted with his feelin' good body. With YoYo and Aero being the newer kids on the cloud, poor Willem will have his hooves full trying to keep them in line.....no, I take that back. Willem will be leading the pack!

Oh, but you will see him again someday. He'll be in all of his glory....

At any rate, sorry for your loss. Sounds like he had a wonderful person to love him.

You know, my cat died, and about 8 months later I had a very vivid dream. He was under a big shade tree just laying - looking very content. He said everything was OK and wonderful. I do believe he was under the rainbow bridge waiting for me.

      • Oh my dear...I'm so sorry for your pain, but not Areo..he is galloping through the green pastures now and he has no more pain!!! I just had to put down one of my old mares in August and then another old boy who rebroke his leg in September...it is never easy, but you did do the best thing for him. And I'm so touched you cared so much for him, you let him go when he needed to go and not let him suffer! He is very happy that you had the courage to help him find his peace with no more pain!!! And yes that look in his eye, is only a look you will know for sure, since you were is best friend...he told you what he wanted and you listened. Take care and hang in there!!!

I just cleaned his stall and Dr Bob showed up fr an appt with another horse and he said "I am so so so sorry about Aero" and I just nodded and the tears were coming fast.

I just spent an hour sitting with him, laying on his neck and crying and sobbing and made sure I wiped all bodily fluids off of him as well know how he felt about them... Eggbutt has connvinced me to leave a check with the girl working ion the barn and leave the premises until he is gone--I will do that after I say my final goodbye. I recovered him as the wind blew his blanket off as I have this need to keep him warm and I keep trying to close his eyes but they wont close---I laid there and stroked his eyelids and did not realize until then how soft they were, or how hairy his ears were, or how long his mane had gotten. I tried to get him to talk to me and there was nothing. I know he is at the bridge, I can feel it, but not exactly sure where he is. Ironically Law and O rder is on right now and it is about euthenasia---Jeske said as animals they have the luxery to have them helped along and humans do not have that luxery---very profound.

Sorry Coreene--I have either been out with him, online on the phone.

Once again thank you for your strength--as eggbutt said on the phone, the hard part is over and the healing now begins---I am afraid to sleep as Ido not want to not dream about him, afraid to eat because I still want to throw up, scared to drive because my mind is so foggy.....pretty much useless right now.

                • Can't write much-crying with you-but know you did a wonderful, unselfish thing for Aero. My prayers are with you. You will hurt for a long time and the tears will come often and your heart will ache (speaking from experience) but you will always have him with you and sorrow will turn to great memories. Bless you.

                  • HP, tomorrow will be a horrible day, but the next day will be better each day after that will keep getting better. Aero will always be with you and you'll know when he's very, very near. Just like me with YoYo and Coreene with Willem and all the others with their beloved one in a million horses, you'll hear him and smell him and feel him at the most strange times for the rest of your life.

The explanation of the "poop bag"....there is something magical about the last poop. Coreene and I both scooped up the last poop and saved it. Coreene kept Willem's in a cup on top of her tack locker and YoYo's is in my freezer at home next to the Lean Cuisines. Coreene has already used Willem's last poop to help the Memorial Garden florish and grow strong and healthy. This it be truly good! Willem is now part of all the beautiful earthly things in his garden. I'm still waiting and holding on to YoYo's last poop until he tells me what he wants me to do with it. I'm sure he'll tell me something very original and strange!

We're all here for you whenever you need us. You have my number -- use it day or night! Perhaps Willem will tell Coreene some stories soon about their escapades together and all the lovely ladies Aero will soon be romancing.

Stay strong wonderful lady. You did the right thing and Aero loffs you for it.

And I am also glad you got some of his tail. Pony Locks makes bracelets, etc. out of your own horse's hair...I'm awaiting the return of Gambit's now.

                      • We, too, had out Law & Order moment when we covered Willem with the tarp an his head with Rufus' towel.

It is a rude twist of nature that their eyes do not close. I warned my brother and parents of this before, and actually had to give a demonstration of it because no one ever believes it!

Molly, Molly, Molly. One day you will look back at this and say "Yes, this it be right." It will actually pop up while you are going through all stages of grief. There is shock and outrage and disbelief and guilt and dispair and emptiness and pain. On really shitty days, it's all those at the same time.

But time heals. It is nature's bandage. You and I have talked about Aero's issues long enough and often enough for me to say that I know that none of us could have done more for him. You were the best mom in the world for him.

As an owner of an old guy (and a couple of middle aged guys), hearing your story is so hard. I know some time in the next few years I will have to make the decision about Skipper. He's 26 this year and in great health, but he's not getting any younger. I hope that when he tells me it's time, I listen as you did for Aero. You did the best (and hardest) thing an owner can. You let him decide when it was his time. I hope I can have the courage you have shown today.

                              • A Little PS About The Poop or Weird Things People Do When Their Horse Dies:

I did not save the entire load. I had shavings out the wazoo, they were Stinking Flounder Deep all over the stall.

The week after Willem passed, I went to the stables and filled the muck bucket, which lived under the waterer because Willem loffed to splash, with shavings and brought bucket after bucket to Trinket (the mare with the huge melanomas all over, especially hanging out of her backside).

Being a complete wreck still, and terribly sentimental, I put four of his roadapples into a big Jack In The Box cup I had in the tackbox, which I used for mixing. Shoved it to the back of the top shelf, where it remained.

Later that day, I thought that I'd put it out under the memorial tree I was going to plant for him, never thought of it again.

July 12 was the first anniversary of his death, so I planted some flowers and a little eucalyptus right next to where we had put him to sleep. And then put the little roadapples under the eucalyptus, so that it would be the fertilizer.

Eucalyptus grows fast anyhow, but I am sure that it was helped along by Willem poop.

                                After all, "poop happens."
