Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Duffy, me, too! What was with that big white slip flapping in the breeze?? It was so distracting, like toilet paper on your shoe distracting!
She went to all the trouble to buff up her dog, so how did she miss the fact that a big white slip under a black slit skirt is a fashion faux pas!
I was so embarassed for her while she was running around the ring with that slip flying everywhere, I completely forgot to watch her dog.

Sorry, but I can't edit, and I wanted to add hitchinmygetalong, that's such a good point. I thought the announcers did a really good job pointing that out. Over and over, one of them made the point that certain dogs would not make good apartment dogs, family dogs, etc. and that people should be realistic before they run out and buy the new cute fad dog.

I'm jealous of you all with cable, etc.

I'm a HUGE corgi fan, especially the cardigans! Go corgis!

I imagine you all have seen "Best in Show"? It's supposed to be a satire - and is - but I thought it was pretty spot-on, especially with the handlers' fashions! It seems so unique to the dog show-world. Sensible shoes CAN be fashionable, or at least pleasing to the eye...

Those of you who dislike terriers, I hope you have a chance to meet a well-bred Cairn one day (not a puppy-mill Cairn: they frequently have temperment or health issues). Besides being the cute little Toto dogs, they don't shed, are game for anything, trainable and always happy. Mine is best buddies with our Lab, and definitely thinks he's the same size.

Also, a voice crying in the wilderness for field labs. Is there anyone else who prefers them to the AKC standard "bench" labs?

Hitch, you are probably preaching to the choir here, but it's a good point nonetheless.

I loved the announcer when the terriers were out. How many variations of "You have to be the sort of a person who can outlast a terrier" do you think he worked in? Not enough by my count!
Your crazy is showing. You might want to tuck that back in.

I have a 8 mo Collie and a 3 yo OTT Greyhound. I am thinking of showing my Collie. It is actually a lot easier to get my horse to stand (stack) than my dog! Aren't dogs supposed to be smarter
As to the TV, my Grey watches all the time when we have animal planet on, and last night the Collie watched for the first time. He would watch only when the dogs were on, I have to believe he can actually see it. It was really funny, he tried to smell them, then kept looking behind the TV. Every once in a while, he would ruff himself up to bark, but ended up just looking puzzled. Very amuzing I hope he learned what to do so I don't have to teach him. Right now, he is a "teenager" and I wonder if judges would be OK with a puppy who jumped on them and wouldn't stand still! We are in obedience right now, and we REALLY need it! Anyone with Collies, do they typically walk around with their mouths open running into things and chewing them on contact? My poor Grey is usually what he runs into!

frugalannie, most of us don't dislike terriers, we just know we aren't the right person to own a terrier, and we are dedicated to seeking out others like ourselves and giving them advance warning!

I used to own a border and my sister and I have owned aussies - I love 'em to death, but I don't go around recommending borders to ANYONE!

That said, I secretly want to own a kerry blue terrier, and have long before Mick came around. Of course I also want to own a borzoi, but figured out after some research, my lifestyle was singularly unsuited (don't have a fenced yard, don't want one, lots of unsupervised, non-fenced, long sight line time at the barn, and most of all, I am a cat owning person). So there you have it. No borzois for me. But I WANT one sooooooo badly I can taste it...
Your crazy is showing. You might want to tuck that back in.

Did anyone catch the tv ad for the the Next American Top Model? It was a quick montage to introduce the new contestants. One of them said that if she didn't win she'll go back home and open a puppy mill.

The horse people seem to be doing just fine with their dogs!
Stephanie Ingram has had a group winner. Stephanie and Frances Lindners dog won the Welsh Springer Spaniel class and will come back tonite. Beth Dowd (our Pony Club leader) had two win their classes this afternoon .. the Clumber and Sussex Spaniel who wil come back tonite. Still waiting on the Corgi results.
Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear, or a fool from any direction!

Thanks Warmheart, my previous JR was one thru the JRTCA and I remember all the issues that were going on. Think the ones they have in the terrier group are just too big, and are beginning to look like crosses. Couldn't put any of them comfortably in side packs on your saddle to hunt with. Even my Dachs-a-russell is small and compact. Non barker, loves absolutely everything! And is in your lap. Will chase, and dig rodents tho.

frug, we russell fanatics are like our dogs. Every person is subject to their likes, and of course since we're small, energetic and constantly in someone's face we are sighted for all kinds of slaps. Its all in good fun, well most of the time.

Yea! I LOVE my cairn! At heart he is a mastiff, but in a "convenient travel size" package...

I am an animal nut, my husband lives in fear of the day we move to our 25 acres. He knows we will have mucho critters. We have many neighborhood doggie buddies including a malamute (whom I adore) and a Rottie, a pit bull and a pug (ugly little critter). Can you believe 3 of them are neighborhood drop-offs my friends rescued?

Couldn't get to watch the whole thing last night, but tonight I'm going to be glued to the tv.....doesn't it repeat later this week as well?

The only terrier for me is a Boston, and they don't even qualify for "holy-terrier"!! However, that Norfolk sure was a cutie-pie!

I prefer the toys and the small non-sporting dogs, maybe because I just don't get along with hounds or herding or sporting type dogs. I just love the precious little doggies, NOT fu-fu ones like the peke or any other little doggie that's covered in long hair (although a friend of mine has a long haired Pappilion and it's a great little dog). No, give me a squatty French bulldog or a smart little Boston any day!

So, you knowledgable dog folks, what about Beagles?

They seem to me to be a good compromise between the big dogs that I love so much, the terrieristas, and the small dogs that are too delicate for my taste and don't seem like real dogs to me (sorry toy folks, just my personal opinion). They seem like real, tough dog-dogs that would love a good visit to the barn but are still small enough to live in town. Or am I sadly mistaken?

Not that I'm going to run out and get one, and not that I don't love my cats. I'm just fantasizing about the day I might be home enough to have a pair of dogues (as Willem would say) around in addition to the cat-beasts.

                                        • Did anyone catch the handicapped handler in the 13" and under Beagle group?!? When I clicked on the video I was astonished to see a wheelchair whip past the camera. Wow!!!! In all my dog showing years I've never seen a wheelchair in the ring.

However this guy was not only showing his dog on the lead, but he was there as his dog was being judged on the table. The camera stayed on him as he baited, then jogged his dog out along the rail, one hand on the lead the other guiding his motorized wheelchair.

                                          Awesome!!!

I give high credit to every person who loves their dogs that much to let nothing impede them from the joys of showing.

PS. My breed is the Sheltland Sheepdog (Herding Group) which I showed for years. Now I'm into helping/teaching the kids in our hunt to show our beagles in the hound shows. Can't wait for the spring MFHA hound shows!
