Remember that the GS and the Bloodhound showed back to back classes and were "warmed up"..and probably showed earlier in the day..They were stoked and "on"...the others that showed last night are kinda like the horse that goes on the trailer at 4 am, but doesn't go 'til 5 pm....

Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I went to a dog show in the UK and none of the breeds were docked or had their ears cropped (that I saw). Takes a little getting used to - especially the Great Danes and the Dobes. I thought it was nice, but it was difficult to identify some of the breeds!
I wonder if a cropped American or Canadian dog can compete across the pond and not get penalized. Anyone know? </div></BLOCKQUOTE> I may be wrong on this, but I think it is now illegal in the EU to crop ears and dock tails, due to the strong animal protection lobby. It's considered cruel and unecessary. But that's a great question about whether they can show over here successfully?
That GSP was amazing. During one of the trot arounds, she was out in front of her handler in great form, with lots of natural impulsion, energy, and desire. And when she posed, the way she concentrated on her handler, you could really see her out in the field holding a point for hours if needed.
Anyone notice that the only person who used the word "bitch" was the judge when they interviewed her after the BIS? All the announcers called them "females." Thanks again due to the FTC's sanctimony, they're afraid to use the word even in its absolutely proper context!
I think they are showing highlights on NBC Saturday at 5:00 EST, probably only an hour long highlight reel."I don't want to sound like a broken record here, but why is it that a woman will forgive homicidal behavior in a horse, yet be highly critical of a man for leaving the toilet seat up?" I AGREE!!! And I had the exact same thought when I was watching too and thought to myself "how weird is it that I just compared this dog to horses"...LOL
I thought the border collie was a little blah as well---definitely not the best specimen I'd ever seen.
My main question is what was so great about that pekingnese? He didn't seem all that spectacular to me but they kept going on about him. Maybe I just don't get small masses of hair with no legs?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

JMS, I'm confused. Isn't Knotty the dog your mom is showing? Thats the dog that made it into the finals right? </div></BLOCKQUOTE> Sorry for the confusion. No, my mom did not show Knotty (although she is friends with his owner). She showed a bloodhound bitch for a friend of hers. They were hoping for Best Opp. My mother actually is an owner/ handler with her PBGVs and does basset rescue. She got in to the bloodhounds through her friend. We always root for the hounds. After Knotty won Eukanuba, we were all pretty excited. It's about time the bloodhounds got some recognition.
When I saw the GSP, I knew Knotty was in for some competition. Boy is that GSP a great dog. Breathtaking.
Portia- BTW, good question on the cropping. Not sure of the answer except to say that I have an uncropped Dane and many of the breeders here that have more of an emphasis on European lines are not cropping anymore. I think that we will see the trend towards not cropping with the American lines. Also, cropping is a difficult proceedure and not all crops turn out great. You can have an excellent dog with a failed crop and not be able to show it, where it would have been fine it you left it alone in the first place.

There's a Dane puppy that comes out to the barn a lot, a real sweetheart. His owners got him after he had already been cropped; they are Dutch and wouldn't have done it themselves. I feel sorry for him because he's had his ears taped up for weeks and weeks. Then he gets them taken down for a few days, then they're taped up again. It seems like a hell of a process to put them through.
On the dog front, there's a good article on Salon.com today about The Dog Whisperer, the guy from the show on National Geographic Channel. It tells a lot about his philosophy, and has one of the best lines I've ever read about JRTs: <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Plus, I always thought that bad, dominant dogs were easy to spot, like my mom's Jack Russell, who quite possibly files as head of household on her tax return </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

On the cropping front, I think most of the dogs that are traditionally cropped (esp. ears) look adorable natural. I love a dobe or dane with floppy ears. They do look considerably less scary that way, though! one of my friends has a dane whose ears didn't come out right. She looks really cute with her ears at half mast, sort of like the flying nun!
Mr. B and I were really blown away by the GSP. She was a beautiful dog, and so intense! We were praying for anyone one to win but the peke. Our next favorites after the GSP were the norfolk and the pyrenees. I didn't think the norfolk was as "on" though, as she was the night before in her group win. She didn't look as smiley and bouncy.

I wish I could remember what website I read it on, but it was about Great Danes and the ear infections they get when their ears are not cropped, supposedly from being kept covered, dark and moist, like some kind of fungus maybe? I really don't remember the details unfortunatley and don't know how true it is, our GD's were always cropped and after the initial discomfort they never seemed in any pain through all the weeks of taping the ears to train them to stand up.
Cropping is an art though, you really need to see someone's work before letting them crop your puppy. We got one of our Dobies from the pound and his ears were so short, obviously someone's first time LOL. Thats probably why he was at the pound, he definitely could not be shown with ears like that even if he were perfect in every other way.

I so want a great dane. I watched the vid of them all in the breed group and it was fab.
I've wanted one for AGES and this didn't help... sigh... I wouldn't feel the need to crop; and I saw in the group that there were some of each. I'm just so used to seeing them cropped, but the taping etc. is awful!

Wet n' Wild Retrievers are prone to ear issues, but with proper, religious care the problem is easily controlled. Cropping "to prevent ear infections" is silly. My retrievers will never have cropped ears
and their ears will be cleaned daily.

The commercial was the hook that got to me to sit and watch the show both nights. What a great commercial (and the afghan hound looked sooo regal with his hair blowing in the wind).
I have an uncropped Dane. Our previous Dane had "crop failure" and after taping and posting his ears for almost 9 months (with the ensuing bleeding infected sores from the tape) I decided it wasn't worth tormenting him for what could be a huge portion of a possibly short life (which it was as I had to euthanize him 2 weeks short of his 6th birthday
). Decided to skip the ear crop on the current Dane. Have had no actual ear infections tho she does need her ears cleaned once a month. Wanna talk ear infections- my Std. Poodle is the queen of those.
I thought the Dane was gorgeous in the working group. Also really like the Mastiff. Also very impressed by the German Shorthair Pointer- a spectacular looking dog and boy could that dog pose.
I've totally fallen in love with the Chinese Crested. Does anyone have one? Very interested and have been trying to find breeders (tho with my newly adopted stray puppy I now have my "quota" of 3 dogs according to the city of Houston).

I am ecstatic that The GSHP won. They are my breed! I am unhappy about the implications though. I hope all the yuppy trendy wannabe dog owners do not rush out and think they can cope with owning a GSHP! They are definitely not for the faint hearted. Need multiples of acres to run and are totally looney until the age of at least 4. People keep bringing them to me 'cos they can't cope with the psycho they have created by keeping them in a garage! They mellow ONLY if exercised and then they are real couch potatoes!... _. ._ .._. .._
