John Holland's update on the accident is terrific. Since he gave permission to post it, let's make sure we share it with all our horse friends across the country. Everyone needs to know the story. As I said in an earlier email, this accident is not the first or the last. It is simply an accident with a name on it - Ramey. The next one could be in your state. We have to stop the hauling of horses in double deckers. Please get the word out to all your friends.

Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I watch for updates on the horses that were seen with open wounds last week - and hope that the Rameys' have decided to attend to their medical needs, or that authorities will take action. I hope that there aren't any flies in the area.

An update...it's the start of gun hunting season here in KY, so I personally haven't been to see the horses. It's a little too dangerous for someone not familiar with those woods.
But, there are two individuals who know the area well and are trying to get closer to the horses, take pictures, etc.. Another person who identifies himself as a "long-term friend of the Rameys" has agreed to talk with Jodey Ramey directly and get information on the horses' medical conditions. The main thing this friend is trying to find out is the name of any local vet who has seen these horses, if any. That way, donations or inquiries could be addressed to the vet and the Rameys could be left out of it entirely, which seems to be their wish.
If I hear any more, I'll be sure to post.

No updates on the accident horses, but yesterday morning Ramey’s other “pot” was parked behind one of their many, many Flemingsburg addresses. The rig’s engine was idling and it was ready to roll.
Sorry, folks, there was nothing to be done to stop it. Ramey Trucking, LLC is still in business, dirty and sordid as it may be.
Somewhere, more horses were going to suffer that day.

I am sad for the next group of horses to be hauled that way.
The election is not far away. I hope others are researching the transport laws (if any) in their states. Mine is woefully without any protection for horses.
I have also been researching insurance. The horse haulers'insurance companies I have talked to so far have all said they would not insure double deckers for the professional hauling of horses.
So, I guess, call em livestock and you can haul em. Call them horses and you'd better not be using a double decker. Sad catch 22.bryn

I just recently found out to my absolute horror that Utah considers horses 'livestock' also as far as cruelty laws go. They have absolutely zero protection here. The can actually be 'kept' without food, water, shelter or basic vet care and there is nothing that can be legally done to the 'owners. The inclusion of horses as livestock was slipped into the anti cruelty laws at the last minute by one of our wonderful, oh so pious church-going legislators."The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear" ~ Socrates

OH man, I'm so ticked off I can barely stand it!!!!
Then there are the people that keep saying we should lay off those Ramey's, RIGHT!!!
The article of the reporter is backed by FACTS!!!
Those nice fellows Ramey's send the other truck to go on instead to come help with the suffering horses? Then the drivers sat on their lazy dumb behinds and watched OTHER people try to safe and comfort some horses and put others out of their misery?
Then they have the nerve to "sell" a horse to the people who's property they just damaged, and have not yet paid or apologized for that?
Excuse me, but those people sound like a certain kind of people that I know from around those kinds of woods.
So now there is a possiblity that those horses are still stuffering, with open wounds, because we were told to "lay off"????
I say lets RESTART and lets RUMBLE. Those people are FILTH. They have NO BUSINESS dealing with any live animals, the way they behaved throughout this whole catastrophy. SHAME ON THEM.
Maybe one day they'll lay around in pain helpless while people will sit down nearby and watch.
It makes me want to vomit.
Why , WHY????? are no officials CHECKING INTO THIS?????
Why can this go on? WHERE are those horses, why can no official ask to see them, on account of eyewitnesses having seen shredded up horses on those peoples property?
How can this happen nowadays????
Yes, I'm angry. I'm very angry, and I have had about enough of this. If I was close enough, you bet I would "harass" those people into having something done to finally help those innocent animals.
I'm just to mad to even continue...and you people who take the Rameys side, go suck on a rotten egg.

I guess I did not explain myself well in my last post.
Horses are included in the Federal definition of livestock, and thus are part of the insurance boiler plate for a livestock hauling policy. They are no different in class than a cow, sheep or pig. That's what the Ramey family business is - Livestock hauling. They own a trucking company that whose cargo is livestock.
HOWEVER, the industry standard among horse people, like the people you would hire to transport your horse across country, does not approve of using a double decker for horses. So, insurance policies for professional horse transport people would not include double deckers as a means of transport. . . atleast the ones I have talked to so far have taken that position.
If your state has no specific language in its state animal cruelty law which addresses the transport of horses, then horses are livestock and have no protection beyond what is given a cow, pig or sheep. . . even though we all know horses' builds, instincts, balance, sustenance, and temperament are very different than cows, pigs, or sheep.
In Pennsylvania and a handful of other states, there are specific laws addressing the transport of horses. Every state needs a law like Pennsylvania's.bryn

I am so confused....I need to look at my office e-mail. I emailed Dr Stout KY State Vet the day AFTER the accident and I seem to remember him saying they were not aware of the accident. I sent him the link and then he said they knew the Ramey's they were dealers and that they would send someone out to check on the injured...
Well I think I just read that the Assist KY Vet said they checked the horses at the state line????? If they didn't know about it until they got me e-mail wouldn't the horses have already gotten to the Ramey'S?
Maybe I remember it wrong.....PROUD MEMBER OF THE \"OMGiH I LOFF MY MARE\" CLIQUE

yes, but not post-able. Sorry.
It is very important each one of us votes on November 2nd. Know the records of each person you are voting for when it comes to animal welfare issues/animal cruelty issues. It is easy to check at your state website and at the congressional website.
Perfectionist, if you live in Congressman Ed Whitfield district you are one lucky horse person. You don't have to check him. But check your state rep and state senator.bryn

An update on a few of the horses, at least. The trainer I know has gone back up on the trails and has seen five of the horses. The others might have been in the same enormous field as well, but they were out of his line of sight. He called to the horses and all five came running up to the fence to see him. He said that while the wounds still weren't being treated the way HE would treat them (bandages, etc.), they appear to be healing. No signs of infection or anything. He didn't take pictures of them, since these particular horses seemed to be doing well, with the exception of the now-healing wounds.
He's going to keep going up there to look for the other horses.

I am coming to this late...what a sad, horrible situation. Are there any television stations in that area that have reporters specializing in investigation? They might be able to shed light on the horses if they really are being left to suffer, and to bring to the public the danger of double decker trailering. Especially if they realize that an overloaded trailer endangers not only the poor animals but other people on the road. Thanks for posting all the information. It is just so stomach-wrenchingly awful that those people would do that to those horses.
