Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I adopted some horses from CBER and did so long distance, so no need to be there in person. I think this was just meant as a convenience -- a day when people who want to come out and meet the horses can be assured of a volunteer to help them. A bunch of the volunteers are pitching in to be there. I'm sure all great homes are gratefully accepted and if like me you are approved long distance, yipee!! These horses would be thrilled to find a forever home.
BTW: my horses are coming via Charlie Gibson Horse Transportation. They offer discounts for rescue horses and while I can't say I called tons of places, they were the cheapest by far (and I've heard good things about them.)

MSP, our posts must have crossed. That's a great idea. I've also heard of people connecting and sharing rides to make it cheaper.

Thats my meaning, one person hauls the horses a few hundred miles then another takes them a few hundred more till they get to their destination. I would think with all the anti slaughter people on here alone it would be easy to do./
        Quality doesn\'t cost it pays.

Well I'm in KY, if it didn't cost me a arm and a leg to get one here, I would do it.
That being said, I would put up a few hundred for someone if they are nearby to by the horse for them, if they wanted to take care of transportation and etc.
A shipping network, with people that have farms so they could lay over for a bit...that would be a good idea. Though with gas prices....ACK! I don't have a trailer, so i wouldn't be very much help.

I think that the relay system is a great idea, but these horses need to be quarantined. I'm not sure that it's possible to arrange overnight sleeping for them at farms along the way when you would have that to deal with.

If I'm wrong, someone please tell me as the most important thing is to find these guys/gals homes.

Since I'm running errands like crazy today until Sunday morning, I need someone to make a call for me to find out the cost of hauling a mare from there to Stoughton, WI. Can someone do it? Also, is there a volunteer hauler going from that direction to eastward?

My daughter is going to call my neighbor/farrier to see if he wants to add new blood to his herd of Clysdale.

And if you cannot adopt one yourself, think of helping SAFE/CBER by contributing to the fund. If the SAFE fund has enough money, they will pull horses as they did for the last shipment. I think 5 or 6 were pulled and saved. However, the SAFE fund has to keep reserves for the care of the horses pulled/sponsored who have not found a permanent home yet. Of course, there has to be foster spots, but some people have volunteered for that and have not been called yet, so maybe this time around, their help will be needed.
That way, you know you are helping a little rather than worrying about not doing anything.. $5, $10 really help when multiplied by 10 or 20 people.
The shipping is prohibitive, but there are some haulers who are willing to help and who care a lot about the horses, even rescues.

I live near the Ohio Kentucky Indiana border and I adopted the most awesome aged mare from this feedlot through CBER. Her shipping costs were under $900. It is the best decision I ever made in my life. I had only seen photos of her and read about her. No video, no one on one, just a decision to walk the walk and give an at risk horse a chance.

Maybe I am just really tired but I can't find a place on the site to give money. Do they have a pay pal or something?

Timing is everything, right now I am struggling to find time for my filly and I can only keep three horses on my property (have two). It is just killing me to see horses that I would like to take home but can't. And, I know in a couple of years I will be looking for a horse just like many of the ones on the feedlot.

BTW no one responded to my question about the horse’s prices. I was wondering why the prices on this feedlot are higher than say the prices on the horses from the killer buyer at Holland; the other thread where 2tracs got a draft for $450.

MSP, on the CBER website, scroll down and on the right, you will see the picture of a horse rearing. There is a yahoo link on that horse. the paypal is CBERPal@yahoo.com

As for the prices, I guess that is the current price in WA. These horses come from auctions, private sales, owners drop them off or respond to ads placed by the feedlot owner in local papers. I guess he pays so much and add his profit and here are the prices. He may get less if he sells for meat which is what he prefers, because then he does not have the hassle of having the volunteers on the lot (as he likes to state).
                      Thank you for helping.

There's something for most on the feedlot this time. And young too - most are 2 -10 yrs. old. A gorgeous TB gelding, a cute QH pony and one senior citizen - an appy - just to mention a few. All looking for homes and time is running out. The next scheduled shipment out to slaughter is Tuesday 10/25. Have you the room in your heart(and barn) for one of these special horses? Please take a peak

Country is obviously misinformed - One of the largest exporters of draft horses to Japan (for human consumption) is right here in my home town of Yelm, WA. They are Shorno Agribusiness and they are anything but out of business. They crate them on site and ship live via Fed Ex air out of SeaTac airport.

Today CBER had an adopt a thon and they will also have one tomorrow. You do not have to go to the lot to adopt one of these horses. If you cannot adopt a horse, please consider donating whatever you can spart to CBER so that we can try and find them foster homes. Time is short, thank you so much for any help you can spare. The paypal button is located near the top of the feedlot page.

Kimmokat, I would tell you to get in touch with one of the volunteeers manning the BB, ie horselover4u. All the other volunteers are at the feedlot. Try RDR too, they may be able to help you.
They will not publish the address on line because Chuck does not want to deal with people... he would rather send the horses to the "canners" and Cber does not want to antagonize him. So pm, ashley (horselover4u). Best bet I think.

If they are still on the lot on Tuesday, there are in danger. They have to be paid for and moved off the lot to be really safe. Cber volunteers will usually move them off the lot.

You might want to check out the SAFE/CBER BB to see what everyone is working on in terms of getting these horses off the lot. There's usually a combination of people donating money to sponsor a horse and people who can provide a place to foster them while we work on finding permanent homes.

Sigh, I tried to get on chat room about transportation but I cannot do so. I am using the family computer at home whereas my personal computer is at work. I cannot get access to my personal computer until tomorrow afternoon. Is there any loophole I can get around to get on the chat room? If I am unable to send a horse over, then I'll send in money to help insure that one of the horses get a home.

                                          Prieta,
your best bet at this time is to contact a volunteer who is on line via pm
The chatroom is usually very quiet during the day.
To get in, you have to have the most recent java and enable the pop ups, and register the first time.
There is a whole forum re transport and I know one person is going to ship 3 horses to NY and has a spot for one more.Don't know which route they are taking though.
The people on line are shown at the bottom of the main bb page, schwung is on line right now. She has also posted her email address and her cell phone, but I don't think she is up on the shipping..
Try horselover4u as well. Use the pm system right now.
                                          Good luck
Just wanted to add, the volunteers may know of someone willing to foster until transport can be arranged.
