Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

You could always go with a short introductory letter, followed with additional letters, petitions, etc. More effective would be everyone sending the same letter, and perhaps more than once (second edition would need to be slightly different, of course)--packs more punch than a petition and tugs the PR strings. Having worked for a Governor in Constituent Relations (blech!) in the past and in Corporate Communications now, I can tell you that nothing produces action like volume. A mailbag or two dropped on a desk has more impact than a petition, even if the numbers are the same. Just a thought.

    Dear Ms. Winfrey,
Why, with all the advances made in humane treatment of animals, are horses still having their legs blistered and burned and wrapped with chains here in the US? Sounds unbelievable, I know, and as a fellow horsewoman, I can imagine that you are shaking your head in disbelief, just as I did when I first learned about soring in Tennessee Walking Horses.

This issue is not as well known as it should be, but you could help change that. These cruel practices are done to "enhance" the horse's gait, and despite it being almost impossible to imagine, over half a million people attend the Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration each year to watch these horses stagger around the ring in agony. I would like you to help change that.

I am a member of an internet forum sponsored by The Chronicle of the Horse Magazine, and when this issue was discussed, the members showed overwhelming agreement to contact you and ask for your help. You have made a difference in the lives of many and stand as an American icon for compassionate, intelligent discussion about difficult topics. Can you help us help these animals?

I would be happy to provide you with more information about this subject, or you could look at the following links:

    LINK, etc.

I hope you can find it in your heart to help us a make a difference for these animals.

    Sincerely,

I'm not sure if I am the 'advertising person' who you think seems so superior, but I would like to point out, you asked for suggestions and opinions, and those of us who offered suggestions are only trying to help. Some of us have done this type of thing for a living...we get paid to take ideas or letters like yours and pare them down to a concise, powerful message.
Please keep in mind, Kat, that everyone who has offered a suggestion or a change has actually taken the time to read your letter, ponder your message and try to help you put it in a format that will get the job done. It is not really such a great idea to then snipe at the people who have taken the time to try to help you.
I wish you all the best with your effort, but I will say it again: short and sweet will get the job done. No whining, prattling on about you, speaking for an organization unless you have their backing and blessing, and no pointing fingers at individuals unless you are absolutely, positively sure of your facts.

        Hi,

I am new to this board but having been following this discussion.

I agree with the others who have expressed concern about the "shoe" issue. If this letter is being sent on behalf of everyone here, it is already quite apparent that everyone doesn't agree on the content. It does have an air of fanatacism...

My own horse is barefoot. I believe that HE is better off this way, however, he has good feet.

I've been curious yet afraid to ask... Why Oprah? Does she own TWH horses or something?

I've seen her show a few times, I'm not a regular watcher. I haven't seen her cover animal rights though, just people stuff.

After looking through this I would imagine that it because not only is this family standing up against the TWH abuses, but they are a Black family standing up against a very white "old boys club".

I wasn't sure if I should post this, I feel like I'm playing devil's advocate here. But I think the people (discrimination, racism, etc?) angle of it may get her attention more than the horse issue, unless she has some particular connection with these horses. Though how much of it was really racism and how much was it that the horse didn't fit the rules?(I didn't read the whole thread, so I don't know why exactly they weren't going to let him show.) The horse did get to go in the show. If they judge the horses on how big the licks are, however it's obtained, then that horse isn't goign to win, not matter who's riding him.

The other thing is this happened in 1999. Why would she want to cover this 7 years later? (Thinking from Oprah's point of view, not saying she should't cover it.)

I dno't have the answer, I'm just thinking out loud. Oprah gets hundreds of letters every day asking for help and exposure. Missing/expolited kids and adults, scams, etc. Why should she cover this issue? What's in it for her? Would her audience tune in for an hour for a horse show scandal or horse abuse? If she's doing a whole show on animal abuse in the US, she could probably do a segment.

How about a list of organizations that we can also send the letter to. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Let's squeak all over the place!

Yes. Race had nothing to do with it, since I suggested they contact Oprah after reading she has Walkers, but before I learned of Champagne Watchout.

I agree that Oprah is the wrong venue for this letter. Try 20/20, Animal Planet, 60 minutes or that animal police show. It's short segment material. I <span class="ev_code_RED">promise</span> you that Oprah will not make a movie of this. Some offbeat independent filmmaker might make a documentary someday....Why not just write a short letter of concern to the editors of COTH and hope they print it? I agree that the TWHs background as a plantation horse is an excellent angle to get Oprah's attention.

I'd say the same about the African Americans that would personalize the story, but that seems too many years old.

Thus, I would amend the first paragraph I suggested originally ( a cruelty to animals hook) to one that opens with the TWHs dispicable and involuntary exploitation by slave-owners in the past.

In the second paragraph, transition to the cruel methods currently used.

The rest of the letter should go as I suggested (just a suggestion...)

But I reiterate: stick to one page and one issue. Rarely will anyone read to the second page. Rarer still will be the non-horse person who reads to the second paragraph on this issue unless it's tightly framed, with a careful chosen angle.

Also, I don't think a petition is the way to go. Petitions are intended for people who decide things. Oprah, despite her undeniably popular power, doesn't decide anything. Despite her flaying of Frey, he was still on the shelves at the airport bookstore when I left the US a few weeks ago.

She puts on a TV show and you're only trying to interest her (or the people who read her mail before she does) in an idea.

                    Good luck.

Sorry. I think race has nothing to do with this issue, and think that playing the race card is dispicable. I think trying to appeal to Oprah, and feeling like you have to emphasize race to get her attention, is insulting.

I mean, why don't you just say "Midnight Sun was black and so is Oprah, so she should be interested". Ridiculous!

I have to agree with you on this--unless you have a shared cultural/racial background which is giving you a "common language," so to speak, I would not go there. It frequently backfires, and can make the recipient feel patronized.

                          jetsmom,

I'm not sure if you were responding to me about the race issue. If so, perhaps you're right and I apologize if I ruffled your feathers.

If you were referring to me, I was trying my best to help the OP write a compelling letter to interest Oprah (not 20/20 or the Animal Channel -- for them, I'd frame the letter differently).

But Oprah is someone (by reputation, I really don't watch her, except for the Color Purple and Beloved, both of which I loved) who is sensitive to issues of abuse, exploitation, discrimination and cruelty.

Given the movies that she's sponsored, she shows a high sensitivity to the issue of slavery as well. So, it's not as though anyone is making up a TWH-slavery connection. I believe that's historical, though I'm here as an expert on writing query letters (which I am, believe me), and not an expert on TWHs.

Comparing cruelty to horses and slavery is, of course, unacceptable, and I wasn't suggesting that. And I would not suggest that the OP do anything remotely similar in her query letter.

Anyway, I hope you weren't referring to me. But if you were, I hope I've responded adequately.

Dizzywriter, not just you, but any post linking the abuse of TWH to slavery on Plantations. It's such a leap, and making it, while appealing to a black person comes across as insulting to them and makes it appear that the issue can't stand on it's own without appealing to racial issues.

I agree with jetsmom. You can only fight so many fights in one letter, and I thought the issue we were all primarily concerned about was the plight of the performance TWH, not plight of the once was plantation horse. All other issues not pertaining to that should be avoided.

I agree, I don't think there's a race issue here at all. I think it's best to stick to the the horse plight, but I just don't think Oprah is going to cover it. I've never heard of her doing any kind of animal abuse show, it's always people problems. I could be wrong. But anyway, if there's not some kind of people angle, I don't think she'd be interested.

It's a ratings issue. We would watch as horse lovers, but what about Oprah's main audience? That's what Oprah's letter reader is concerned with.

I do think Oprah is a decent venue for this, although I do think 20/20 or Dateline would be better.

Oprah actually spent many years in Nashville and worked as a news person in Nashville. I don't know if she did any stories on the TWH but I feel sure she is aware of a few of the problems in the industry, just from seeing news broadcasts.
I wasn't aware she had TWH.

                                        1) COTH (IMHO) is about sport horses (racing, hunter/jumpers, dressage, eventing, driving). As you will notice there is not a section for tennessee walkers.

                                        2) While I fully agree that what you state is being done to the horses is inhumane - please double, triple and quadruple check who you want to send out negative publicity about horse sports to. There is already enough negative publicity about horses, the people involved in the industry, the industry as a whole, you really should perhaps write to the editors of the major horse publications, not the Oprah show, or 20/20 - that is boarding on being a 'bunny hugger' IMHO.

Hitch- Thee people on this page mentioned race/slavery issues. Plus racism was claimed by the OP in the OP. I watched the videos of CW and read their story, and I never thought the problems they had were so much due to racism, but due to the flat shod/BL differences.
