Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • So... which is it?

1000 catalogs sent out "at random" or "Special Customers Only?"

I got the Paperback version--"Elite" Edition. (Is there an EVENTING Elite Edition? Or just Dressage/HJ?)

I think that if Dover did what Cabelas does everyone would be happier. They send out ONE cataloge a year, with everything in it. Fold out tabs for the sections. Then sale fliers very very very periodically. As in, couple times a year. My dad's is hard covered, my husband's "soft" cover, but a heck of a lot more durable than the Dover's soft cover. Maybe this way they'd cut down on printing/mailing costs? I know that I'd be able to keep ONE hard cover edition around easier than try to wrangle 500000 soft cover copies.

    • Apparently I am not special. Soft cover Elite came the other day...

My boyfriend HATES Dover. They send so much stuff to us it jams our little apt mail box. I get at least 2 of everything and then since he ordered me something for Christmas one year we get a third with his name on it.

OH, and they send them to the retail store he used to work at. He shipped my gift there so that it could be a surprise. Apparently the catalog became an entertaining game during down time in the store. The other guys would cover up the name of an item and show my bf the picture and then bet rather he could get it right. Yup, apparently it was played more than once.

Finally, after he transfered, the guys thought it would be funny to see what would happen if they called and changed the name on the catalog. So they called Dover, asked to have the address and name changed, gave em the code on the catalog or whatever blah blah blah... so they switch it to our apt address and have the name changed to...

      Firstname "Methmouth" Lastname

Apparently my bf's "favorite" customer was a lovely woman who was missing the majority of her teeth. (anyone ever work retail near a mall?? You understand...)

The best part?? We got the Methmouth catalog. *sigh*

      • I get so so so many dover catalogs. Haven't gotten a hard cover or much less a new one lately. We shall see.

I was going to buy from them today but gasped at the shipping costs, went to Smartpak and bought several items more than the identical items I was going to purchase at Dover and it still came out less. Then I felt so great about my bargain shopping I purchased a $40 UltraThinLine half pad on Tack of the Day.

Buh-bye Dover!!! I love Smartpak and TOTD and my local shops.

        • Stupid Dover! I finally got a new catalog today, and not only is it not hardcover, but it's also not even the softcover Elite edition! It looks so empty! (Figures I finally order something from them, and then they send me the standard, empty catalog instead of the Elite I had been receiving).

But if I'm going to pay their shipping charges, they are at least going to give me an Elite catalog! So I called and requested it - I want to see the new stuff, too!

          • I get more than one as well and when I do the old one gets tossed! My friend spends a ton of money and her catalouge is NOT hardcovered! (She bought an Hermes and Tad Coffin saddle, a TC bridle, martingale and two pads, amongst a bunch of other stuff!)

Well ,speaking of alternative shopping to Dover, since i had a little extra time on a rainy day,I cruized over to the new Tri-County Feed store in Marshall. Wow ! Is it ever nice! Much more than a feed store. It is a very well equipted tack stoe. The have a bunch of saddles, clohtes ,boots , pretty much everything. It is really spacious ,with leather seating ,cookies to nibble on,and friendly staff. i got fat cat cat food(why I went actually) ,horse treats, gloves, and a new pair off ariat tellurides h2o's for the same price as listed in the Dover catalog. They didn't have the half chaps Iwanted ,but they ordered them for me.
If you live around here ,and haven't been to the new store, have a look. It is right by the Farquier Livestock exchange.

Your going to love that Thinline pad, your horse will too! I bought a Thinline Contour pad just after the new year and have been pleased w/ it. And man, what a killer price you got at $40!!!

SmartPak is just plain efficiant w/ orders and shipping. I'm also partial to the lack of equipment they carrry because sometimes looking at pages and pages of variations of jointed snaffle bits makes my brain explode. The western equipment catalogs seem to carry no less than 4000 variations of bits.

Not directed at you but more to the thread- I won't jump on the "I hate Dover" boat because I have mostly had good service from them and one exceptional experience years ago when a Dover gal did some awesome research and found an obscure item I needed for my Bates saddle. She did not drop the ball and I appreciated that. Personally I think the catalog is excellent & I really have not found it that difficult to toss out the old catalog when a new one arrives.

                  • Grrr... I was excited when I got my Dover catelog, but now I'm sad b/c not only did I not get the oh-so-stunning hardcover, I didn't even get the Elite edition this time!!!! I can't find the Spanish Riding school stuff, Hermes bridle, or any of the fun stuff mentioned... I did however find the brand new GPA that presumably is going to continue ripping off people who want new helmets.... I just love how they've gone up over $100 since they came out... Lovely.

I highlight my Dover Dressage elite Edition Catalog as well and pass it to my honey for various gifts for B-day, Valentines, Christmas, and Mother’s Day.

I love Dover - I just bought 2 pairs of breeches for 75% off from them. Great deal!

I tried to shop at other places: one had a horrible customer service with shipping that took 1 month. Another one had a really convoluted website that was supper difficult to navigate - I gave up. Another one emailed me the promotion of 60%, but when I went to look it was hundreds of items 10% and 15% off, but no 60% off - I felt it was miss advertisement. Another one sent me a catalog of mostly western stuff and by page 9, I was lost and bored looking at it.

I agree that Dover sends a LOT of catalogs - they probably can cut some of thick ones off – I throw away most of them with out even looking at it. But I like the small ones with "specials" - this is how I found 75% off Kerrits Breeches!

And it adds quite a bit of time to when you actually get the item. I ordered something from them for a gift and missed the birthday by a week...because it took over 3 weeks to get to me.

                              • If they selected people the way Express/Limited used to select people for coupons--- it wasn't Dover's BEST customers. It was customers with a credit card who hadn't charged anything in a while. The theory being that you don't have to send an incentive to the regular customers, they come in and spend anyhow. You don't want to send an incentive to a random person, they might not care or might come in once and never come back. But someone who USED to spend and stopped, that is a customer you want to try to convert back to a regular.

I don't think I've gotten ANY Dover Catalog since the "BEST SALE EVER, VOLUME 2: EVEN BETTER THAN BEST" came.

                                • I've always had a great experience with Dover and their customer service, until last month when I went in to purchase a new helmet. That day it was like WTF???. Four salesgirls gathered around ONE customer to help them select a new blanket while I'm standing there with a helmet in my hand with this helpless 'please help me with helmets' looke on my face. Everyone of them turned and looked at me for a brief second or two, then turned around and went right back to the blanket customer! It took 20 minutes to get one of them to ask me if I needed help and there was only 1 other customer in the store!

Truly, I'm not a scary looking troll like person, and I'm there often enough that they know I spend a lot of money there! I have much better luck with their catalog sales, but helmets need to be tried on in person.

However, I find this latest news very troubling, as their shipping charges have just been going up and up, and I agree with everyone else... I'm always quick to write a 'happy, satisfied customer' letter, but I think I may be writing them a 'WTF are you thinking letter' on this one.

I love Dover too. But, those shipping charges have sent me elsewhere. I buy from Smartpak and Equus Now, if my local tack shop doesn't have what I want.

                                    • I worked in Advertising for ten years for an agency that specialized in catalog production. A catalog with a hard cover is so out there cost and production-wise, I can't imagine what they're thinking. What a huge waste of advertising budget, especially in these economic times.
I shop at Dover all the time and I must not rate because all I got was a flimsy Dover Sale flier this week.

Hey tri-County...your a bit late in picking up on this thread as I started it about a year ago,but better late than never. yes my half chaps were fine, and I am due to visit your store again soon. I got a gift card for there for Christmas ,and I want to spend it.
I had sworn I was not going to Dover anymore ,but I got a gift card from there ,and although I didn't go to the store,I ordered something on line that i wouldn't normally have bought ,of course they were out of my first choice, but non the less managed to use up my gift card which when you added in the shippinf left me with about .60 cents. My landlord just attempted to buy a blanket they had on sale ,and after a few days when she checked her order status found they were out of her size,so she ordered another, and guess what ??? a few days later ,she again discovered they were out of her size. So now she is on attempt #3.I think if it were me I'd buy my blanket elsewhere. I mean, can't they shoot her an email and tell her the item is unavailable?
Did I mention that Tri -County sells CHOCOLATE? Nice touch TC. I'll see ya soon !

Well, I don't mail order from Dover, but I do shop at their Hockessin store. If they don't have what I want, I order it and it is shipped directly to me free. If it is not what I expected, I return it to the store and they take it back and credit my credit card. I have never had a problem. The staff is always friendly and courteous. As far as hard cover catalogs and numerous catalogs go...two names: LL Bean and Cabela's. We get a slew of them including the deluxe hard cover editions. I guess that I am fortunate to be able to actually go to Dover to shop. The only other tack shop I deal with really is Dressage Extensions or sometimes Bit of Britain.
