Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I didn't get the hardcover luxury edition I guess I don't rate. But I did buy some $1.99 ivermectin they had on sale and it was...surprise...... apple flavored! kudos from the ponies.

I got over 14 catalogs from Dover last year. Add in all the other mountain of catalogs, most horse related, and the waste just burns my green heart. Add duplicates because my husband has ordered things too, and he has his own last name (different than mine) and we're just about over it. I agree with sending one master catalog and sale flyers.

know who is worse than Dover? Smartpak.

I too, used to get copies of dover catalogs sent all over... I got them at college, my boyfriend got them at college, my mom got them at my house, I got them at my house, etc.

Since moving out I tried to convince them that I live at one place, my mom does not need one, nor does my fiance who lives with me. It hasn't worked.

The basis of how they send catalogs is the response via orders. They have a very complex system of analyzing who is likely to order from what catalog and then send it at certains of the year to prompt an order. I have trouble with that though, since I event, but instead of getting the eventing issue, I get the regular one and occassionally a dressage issue.

Thanks, but I think I'll stick with the softcover...but you're right, I should complain and ask them to compensate by giving me a new saddle. And that Hermes bridle.

Hmmm maybe if they lowered their shipping charges they might get some customers back - I do NOT order from their catalog anymore - not worth the money.

I think I'll continue to support my local tack shop which is so much better than Dover .
Luckily, my local tack shop IS Dover so we don't have to pay shipping charges at all!

Haven't gotten a new catalog yet. I'll be interested to see if it's hardcover. It would be nice to have one master catalog for the year and only get sales flyers or emails.

I wish there was a way to search online for an item and get the lowest price even if you don't use the sales flyer code. I'm always searching through two or three different catalogs to make sure I have the actual lowest price. And then I always feel like someone else is getting the really cheap sale catalog I don't have!

Mine must be on its way because when I was at Dover tonight, one of the girls I normally deal with said, as I was leaving, "Oh, and on Monday, you should get your new copy of our catalog." Which I thought was odd because when is it ever an 'event' when you get their catalog. Now this makes sense that she made mention of it.

I sincerely hope my letter carrier just sets it next to my mailbox. I HATE going to the post office.

A new Dover Catalog isn't an event in your house? Mine is cause for celebration! New highliters and an evening of nerdy horse fun

I must admit that I love getting a new Dover catalog. I put a pot of tea on, grab something fattening to eat, and just enjoy the time browsing away.

My inside source says that the "VIP" customers (IE those who are top spenders) got the hardcover edition. The logic was that most of the "VIP" customers are barn owners/trainers and they're hoping that the catalog will be left in lounges/tackrooms/etc at the barn for lots of eyes to see.

Seems like a waste to me... especially when you look at the DOVR stock history.

However, I do like looking at the new products, although I think the selection is getting a bit excessive... there must be 50 different brands of breeches in the new catalog!!!

I just want a new catalog. Probably won't get the elite version since I only make a couple of orders at best each year and none of them are big orders.

Dover always finds a way to make me mad. From the shipping charges to the different prices on the internet from in the catalogs it drives me nuts. I ordered from the internet and paid a higher price than what was listed in the current catalog. Sometimes there are different prices on the same item listed twice in the same catalog. Isn't that illegal??!

I only recently discovered the fact that Dover's internet prices can differ (higher) from their catalog prices. I was floored -- all these years I've lazily just logged on and input the name of the item I wanted, assuming it would be the same price as in the catalog. Not. In the midst of doing a large online order last week, I had some reason to check something in the catalog and noticed the prices were cheaper on every single item. I called customer service and was told it was because the "new catalog was coming out with higher prices that were already reflected on the internet. And that this was a rare occurrence." Well, I think not. And I'm seriously irritated since I spend lots of money at Dover and now feel I've basically been screwed by not checking every single item in the catalog. And I'm not talking sale prices or discontinued models here, either, I'm talking normal, run of the mill items like bell boots and saddle soap.

I hate Dover (and have ranted on CotH about it plenty).

They seem incapable of dealing with the duplicate catalogue issue, too, despite repeated calls to them with the customer #s and such from the labels. I was in my old neighborhood several weeks ago, and was chatting with a neighbor when the folks who lived in my old apartment came by. When we were introduced she said, "Oh! You're the girl who gets all those Dover horse catalogs!" I haven't lived there in almost four years.

SmartPak went through a period of excessive mailings, but they seem to have stopped. I can't remember the last time I saw something from them (and I order from them a lot.)

I hate the fact that Dover's site rarely has what's in the catalogs.

I don't get why I get the H/J issue though when I only buy Dressage stuff, and they asked what discipline I do?

I get a catalog at my parents house, my husbands old apartment, my old PO box, my current address. My parents get two catalogs each, my business gets one at the old PO box AND my new address. Husband gets one at the PO box, his old apartment, and our new home. That is 11 freaking catalogs total! Completely ridiculous! However, I never have to worry about not having one when I need it

I do love to see the cover but seriously, it is on the way to my barn so I am in there several times a week. So, I enjoy getting my fix face-to-face. But like you, I do mark pages (I actually have an anal-special way of folding the page so there is a little tab at the top and the page pops out right where the item is) of stuff I want to piss all my money off on.
