Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Mac users--creating ads with "Pages"--ugh!

Trying to create a "horsy" ad for a publication on "Pages" and finding it terribly lacking. I am used to Microsoft Publisher that has lots of bells and whistles for creating such things. Does anyone know if Mac has a better publishing program? This "pages" thing doesn't even have nice borders or show you what the different fonts look like. I can't use any templets either because they don't work for an ad.

I would really appreciate any help!

The publication is not doing this work for you?

I own a couple magazines. Design work is included in the price, but some clients want to do the ads themselves. Some clients want to send me ideas for their ads. I can't do anything with a Microsoft Publisher file. Nothing. I haven't received anything in Pages yet - another program we don't have and don't support.

Some people have created a sample in Powerpoint and sent it to me. We print it out, then recreate in InDesign. We've also received Photoshop files. A few created in Word. But we rework all of them.

Pages is fine for flyers, brochures and such printed at home. It is the equal of any other word processing program (ie MS Word) but is not a high end graphics program. If you are trying to do an ad for print, go with the real deal... Illustrator or Quark Express or the like - powerful but friendly enough for the amateur. Then you can have a file type your publisher can actually use. Produce camera ready art and such.

MS Publisher is also intended for home printed flyers, etc. Not a "real" graphics program.

I have advertised with this publication for several years and they have proved to be terrible at creating ads! At one point when are systems were not compatible I would make up something in Publisher and fax it to them. They would send back a proof of their version of the ad for my approval. It would look like a five-year old did it!! It would take several back-and-forths to get it right. Then they accepted publisher and it made it easier.

Now with the Mac, I can't do nearly what I could with Publisher. Text boxes appear and disappear, there are tons more fonts but they just have the names of the fonts and not an example of what the fonts are supposed to look like. There are no borders to speak of other than a line above and below the text box. Pictures are easy to import though. I think that is the ONLY thing I like about Pages! There is nothing like Word Art--nothing creative at all!

Consider getting your hands on InDesign. You'll be happy you did!

            Thanks.

Pages is not nearly as good as Publisher! No bells and whistles at all! I'll find out about those programs you mentioned. I just happen to think of a neighbor who does graphics work on a Mac. I wonder what she uses. I have a journalism background and want my ads to look good. I just have no confidence that this magazine can produce what I want. Doesn't have to be real fancy but I feel like my hands are absolutely tied with Pages.

I am really questioning my decision to buy a Mac. Not sure it is better or helpful.

Well, you're comparing apples to pineapples. Pages isn't a desktop publishing program. It's the equivalent of Word, which I wouldn't expect to make ads with, either. If your neighbor is doing graphics work, she's probably using Photoshop. You can pick up Photoshop Elements (the non-professional version) for under $100.

To see a sample of the fonts, search Font Book in the spotlight. That program lets you see all of the fonts, as well as manage any new fonts you buy/download.

Pages is not a program I would pick for making something particularly detailed or complicated. The text boxes can be find of finicky, and it doesn't have quite as many features (that I could figure out, anyways) as Word.

If you can't look into buying anything like Photoshop Elements, try searching some tutorials on youtube.

I create ads with Pages all the time and I used to use Publisher. I actually like Pages better. The same bells and whistles (more, actually) are there, just under different menus. Much you will find under the text and graphics inspectors. Other features you'll find under the Format menu. There are tons more fonts than I had in Publisher. I especially like that Pages will automatically resize photos - something that frustrated me in Publisher. I got a book - The Missing Manual for IWork that helped me a lot.

As for the text boxes appearing and disappearing - Under "Arrange" you can send boxes forward and back to create a hierarchy for the layering of photos and text boxes. It can get tricky sometimes.

No publications I know will accept either Publisher anymore, or Pages. I convert to a photoshop pdf file before sending out an ad (usually just under the final, final deadline and my ad rep is steaming).

                  Good luck!

Curious really... a pdf should be a pdf, should it not (regardless of the tool used to create it)?

MAC is nice (at least IMO) since one of the 'print' options is to create a pdf so no hunting around for a pdf writer if you are on a PC.
You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something… S. Jobs

For some unknown (to me) reason, sometimes the photos don't embed in a regular pdf. If I import the pdf into photoshop and save it as a photoshop pdf, this doesn't happen. I also use photoshop to reduce the file size more than Pages will do.

Word Art is considered creative? I think I'd fall out of my chair laughing if I ever saw Word Art in a professional ad in a publication.

I'm on a Mac and I have the Adobe Creative Suite, which includes Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive, and a pro-level version of Acrobat. I've done several large (80+ page) horse show programs with ads using InDesign for layout and Photoshop for the ad design.

Pages is really only a word processing program. Would you expect to do ad design in Word? Of course not - but that's really all Pages is. Just like Keynote is just PowerPoint.

Creating the PDF in Photoshop probably embeds the fonts and then flattens the files, making them smaller. In the past we've had a problem with ads created in Photoshop, as the black isn't really "built-black." The problem is that the black is somewhat muddy. Running the entire file through Distiller seems to alleviate this problem.

InDesign, Quark and the others are expensive to have on hand for the occasional ad. Could you work with your neighbor to create the ads for you? Paying the neighbor could be a cost-effective, time-saving answer to your problem.
