Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Must be nice to be a short woman

Seriously, not only do you have a pick of less expensive small horses that are wonderful, you also don't have to deal with finding dates taller than you are! (And for some reason really tall men seem to be attracted to very short women. While the converse seems to be true for tall women. )

Honestly, what is the downside to being a short woman?

Okay, so maybe there's a qualifer to short? What is too short and what is the perfect degree of shortness? No mounting block for a 15 h horse?

Are shelves REALLY a challenge? Don't you just use step stools or small ladders?

Having to pay for custom boots/shoes/clothes/breeches since nothing fits?

Not being able to get your legs past the mid-flap on "horse-sized" saddles so you can't have contact?

I'm 4'11". And kids attire don't fit my bodily curves!

Having a great view of belly buttons all over the world since 1961......LOL

Velvet, how tall are you? I am just curious what you consider to be short!

Pant, skirts, or dresses that if not shortened, reach up to one's chin.
Having to be almost scrunched up against the steering wheel to reach the gas pedal/brake. I try not to think about the air bag deployment.
Trying to bridle a 17 hh horse. No, I don't own one, just have ridden them.
The only place I am short is in my legs. Forget off the shelf tall boots. I need a wide calf and oh, 16.5" height.
Taking a flying leap to get into our F-250.

Tiny bit under 5'10". I'm not super tall, but I swear having long legs can suck some days when you can't find breeches and boots (guess shorter women have similar issues) and when you find great horses that just can't take up your leg. (And, as noted, getting bummed that all the guys who are even close to 6' are dating women who are 5'3" or shoter. )

Hahaha!! I am 5'5" so you are tall compared to me. I take a 34-35" inseam which is not all that long, but it a pain finding pants that are long enough. I cannot imagine being any taller! I understand the tall man, short lady thing-- one of my friends is 6'5" and married a woman who is right at 5'. My height is pretty alright, though-- I can ride the big barreled short ones and the slightly finer tall ones and be quite happy.

I have some pretty dirty thoughts on why guys that are tall are attracted to small women. Shame on me!

Sounds like you have a short waist, too. That's helpful. Long waists really suck. Especially with the low rise breeches these days.

Oh, where to begin. Nothing fitting would be a good start. But, right now with college being on break, it would be looking into the armpits of my two sons. (ok, probably not even the armpits, but you get the drift.)

Oh, and having the top of your head used as an arm rest. Love that too.

OK not horse related, but a great short person story...

I'm always being asked "How short ARE you??" and being patted on the head

and being a smart a$$ used to reply: "About 6 inches shorter than I used to be thanks to people patting me on the head!".

Don't try this at home! I had to stop when, in a bank lobby of all places, a bigger smart a$$ responded: "Oh, then let me help you" and patted my behind!!!

PS. 3DF.. right with ya! Normal torso height, short arms & legs. My boots, aye yi yi, short and FAT in the calf!!

                            LOL!
I'm 5'3 but I am NOT short thank you very much. lol

I *used* to be able to grab mane and swing onto any horse bareback...HA! not anymore. Now I am very creative in finding suitable mounting blocks, whatever the horse's size! I used to ride tall WBs and unless they were huge in the barrel, I felt fine on them.

I don't have any problems finding pants etc. that fit ( I must have long legs for my size...?) but I have small (5.5) feet and finding nice fitting, good quality SOCKS is a PAIN!

Other than that...I'm happy with my size, my nice little Tb mare, and my 5'11 hubby!

I'm on the short side...5'2". Not super short, but definitely under average height.

I have a tall sister and 2 average height sisters and 2 talller than average brothers. Both of my parents are average height. I have *no* idea how genetics were working there. (also can't figure out why both parents have variations of red hair and 4 of us are bright blonde and 2 of us have jet black hair. Wonder what the heck my mother was telling my dad, LOL)

My only guess on my height is that I'm kid #6 and mom ran out of anything to pass along to me.

My brothers enjoy their height, my tall sister is not a fan of her height. She's 5'10" so not super-tall but she still has a tough time finding clothes (sleeves too short, pants too short, size 11-11.5 feet)

She's always had shorter than average guys interested in her. Back when she rode years ago she had to pay a fortune for custom everything from boots to coats to saddle flaps. (long legs!)

However, when she walks into a room...she's very much noticed. Hard to miss a tall leggy blue eyed blonde!

I walk into a room and get stepped on.

And yes, most of the guys that were interested in me pre-marriage were taller than average. And no, at my height you can not slow dance with a 6' 6" tall in public...it looks bad.

I have no idea why really tall and really big guys seem to be attracted to smaller than average women. Maybe it's a protective thing? Have no idea.

I don't have too many detriments for my height. I can swing up bareback on horses up to 15.2 or so. Used to be able to do that up to 16.2hh if the horse wasn't wide too, but age prevents that now and I just splat into the side of them. I don't require petite clothes, I can usually find things that fit decently.

I do have issues with barn clothes because I buy those in men's because thy're made better and they just don't have men's sizes that fit my size.

I do have issues with the tractor though...I have a rocker pedal and when I rock it forward to drive it's enough of a reach that my weight comes off the seat enough to activate the emergency shut off. So sometimes I drive around in fits and starts as I keep rocking my butt back on the seat.

But the best part? At my height and weight there aren't many ponies I can't ride. And ponies are a LOT more fun than big horses!
                              You jump in the saddle,
                              Hold onto the bridle!
                              Jump in the line!

Ha! I'm 4'10 1/2", true runt, no legs, short waist, so not much fits. Even petite sizes need to be petite short for pants not to have to be hemmed, sleeves shortened! Yeah, custom everything as far as boots and saddles to fit. Regular pants would hang in the crotch to my knees! I use an overturned water tank to get on, and thankfully my horses all reach down for the bit, so that isn't an issue (except when I'm starting a young one). I usually stand on a mounting thing in the stall to be sure the saddle pads and saddle is positioned correctly. You can't reach anything, you walk around department stores and can't see over anything. My hubby says when I drive the truck all that you can see from behind is the top of my head. Gets very claustraphobic in a crowd. The world was built for taller and bigger people, so it's not that much fun!

                                    4'11", 27" inseam here.

You use this to reach upper shelves, where you don't put anything that you can't grab with it:

                                    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Advantages, you can ride little ponies, you don't have to starve and sweat to make the weight when competing, or riding race horses.
Every place I have been, when no one could catch a horse, they called me and the horse would come to me.
When teasing mares every morning, I went to the pasture to get them without any problem.
The times I was not there, they could not catch some of them.
Loose horses seem to like shorter people.

While I can't reach some places, there are others I am the only one that fits in there.

Eating at restaurants can be a challenge, where the tall tables puts the food at nose level.

Driving the grain truck to the elevator at harvest was always good for a laugh, as they tell me it looked like a truck without a driver.

Talking to very tall gals, I keep hearing they are self conscious and not very happy about their above everyone's height.
Very short people rarely notice being short, the whole world is taller.
When we see a very short person, we do a double take and have trouble not staring.
My long time BF was rather very tall and we looked like Mutt and Jeff.

Getting on a horse was never a problem, that is what fences, trailers, pickups, buckets, a leg up, all that is for.

MistyBlue you're about the same size as me, depending on who 'sticks' me. Army docs put me as 5'nothin, Civilian doctors have me at 5'3". Both measured me barefoot, within the same month, go figure lol.

Sure, its nice to be able to ride a variety of horses opened up by petiteness, but I have the same problem with my tractor and finding clothes that fit just right is, ahem, fun. Not only am I short(ish), I'm rail thin so if it fits in length, its too baggy (even my skinny jeans, it even makes ME sick) and if it fits my legs, it's usually too short. >.<

It's nice when people gawk at me doing the splits to mount a 17+hh horse from the ground and they marvel at my monkey skills, but it would be nice to not have to climb ontop of that horse to reach things down from high shelves!

Let's face it. It's rare for anyone, big, small, round, thin, super curvey or not at all, to ever happy with their size!

thanks to old age, I'm now down to 4'10" from the lofty heights of 4"11 1/2.

                                        The advantages:
                                        I can ride ponies.
I can use my stature as an excuse to not do the heavy lifting.

                                        The disadvantages:
Limited selection of street clothes, riding clothes shoes, boots, saddles, and horses. What is out there, worth having, and available is usually more $$. If I don't make it to the local 9 West store early on delivery day, there are no 5.5 size shoes left, as they only send 1 pair in maybe 3-4 styles, and only 1 of those is actually cute.

And yes, I said limited selection in horses. The main reason seems to be that for nice, good minded, athletic or safe ponies I'm competing with the parents of children who are willing to pay higher than market value for the kid safe pony who can get their little darlings to the year end finals or trainers who have deeper pockets, so the only thing left for me are the crooked legged or crazy ones, unless I want to pay in the mid 5 figures for it.

For horses... everyone is breeding for 16h or above.

And just take a look at the dressage forum to see how long it takes all the petite ladies to find a suitable saddle with shorter flaps.

And then there's the truck and tractor issue. DH and I are dreading the hunt for a new tow vehicle when my 97 Tahoe finally stops working for me, because we'll have to get top of the line at around 45K so that I can adjust seats, steering wheel and foot pedals to drive without kissing the steering wheel.
