Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

Well, no one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to read, right?
So if you find certain posters' styles abrasive, you are free to skip them or to use the ignore feature.

The way bbs and life in general work is that you get to express your opinion, and others get to do the same.

Yes, here there are some limits.
Other places there may not be.
But until you get appointed moderator, you're stuck with the fact that the world may not always conform to your desires.

Sometimes we just feel snarky for whatever reason (maybe just not enough coffee) and sometimes you (not as in you in particular, but the general, I don't know who you are you) can really ask some stupid questions. As in a questions that gets the response "let me google that for you". And then, the snarky comments begin.

Anyway, horse people need to be tough. COTH is not for the thin skinned!

"COTH is not for the thin skinned!" Boy howdy! Amen to THAT! I send people here just because of the sheer nastiness of some of the responses I've seen....and there generally are pearls of wisdom to be gleaned to, but I honestly know of no other horse forum as nasty as this one. And I return like a moth to the flame...!

I have a couple boards I go to that are like littleum describes--well, one, because most that require everyone to be nice die. Echo chambers are boring. Honestly, life is a lot less stressful when you don't have to sugarcoat.

Huh, I personally find this BB to be one of the more moderated, controlled and civil ones.

There are quite a few out there that'll turn your hair grey!

This one is enormous with a lot of different personalities. Unlike like other BBs where all the members are basically the same and either it's all bitching all the time or just folks posting replies with sparkles and puppies and ranibows in them. Polite I guess, but totally useless.

Look at this forum as being in a field with a herd of mares. There is a pecking order and sometimes a bit of a dust up when the alphas jump in. You just have to find your place, who to hang out with, and who to avoid.

As for us stallions, the mares tolerate us, make sure we don't cause trouble, and give us a swift kick if we get too cocky.

I have no idea how the geldings are doing here.

well played Mike. But what makes you think you don't know how the geldings are doing? I'm sorry, was that rude> hope not just my usual sarcasm.

Listen OP, everyone's right. I too have had a little snark here and there. But i loves me my COTH forums. I love all the topics, the advise, the humor and the frivolity. The snark is few and far between in my eyes but it sure keeps it interesting.

I guess you can count me in the thick skinned old mare herd...

Maybe the OP wouldn't have been as offended on the skinny horse/hay/husband laughed remark if she knew that Tamara in TN's business is growing/selling hay. Therefore her husband's knowledge base/experience will probably make the idea of feeding 10 lbs of timothy per day, and expecting a weight gain seem funny. Tamara and her husband can probably do pretty close estimations of calories/hay weight just off the top of their heads, while the rest of us have to think about it. I'm sure there was no personal slight intended.

Welcome to the world of CoTH. Ignore those who push your buttons, don't get involved in the snarky threads, remember to say "Well, Bless your heart!" at those who are snarky, rethink your wording on the posts..... and glean info where you can.

There are some holier than thou folks here, some who will pounce at the slightest opportunity, some who will think you know nothing even after MANY years of membership... and some who are honestly trying to help you along the path. After a while you will figure out who is who....

                            Sigh.

I find it ironic that someone who wants to proclaim the members of this BB are rude starts a whole thread just to tell them that they are rude. How polite is it, exactly, to start a topic just to point out the negatives of another poster?

You lead a very sheltered existence if you think this forum is the nastiest. So, why would you send friends here if you think it is so nasty? That doesn't even make sense.

Yes, there are a few posters who are easily ignored but for the most part people here have opinions and are willing to share them and and there are a lot of very knowledgeable people. The great thing about COTH is that people ARE willing to share their knowledge and sometimes strong opinions.

If you are one of those people who is so sensitive then you should perhaps consider a different forum.

I am not expecting anyone to comment...I just had to get this out...Sorry
Not expecting "anyone to comment" is very similar to a "wet paint - do not touch" sign. You just know someone has to prove that the sign is right.

As for other forums, it's amazing that the same threads posted here, are posted on them. So I guess if you don't like the answer you are looking for on COTH, there are other places to get the "sunshine, rainbow & butterfly" enema.

Or you could take the high road as one OP did and just turn a "trainwreck" completely around. I can't remember the name of the thread but it turned into the "Marinate the Mods" and ended up quite humorous.

Anyone who thinks CoTH is rude or nasty ought to hang out on a gardening forum I frequent. Yes gardening. As in pretty flowers and ripe tomatoes. See, people who garden are very opinionated about politics (for some odd reason), and "nasty" doesn't even begin to cover it. And the moderation is very loose. CoTH is peaceful by comparison.

There is such a thing as too nice. I think that kills more forums than anything. If you can't freely share an opinion, what's the point of conversing at all?

Does it make more sense to expect thousands to conform to what you wish, or for one to conform to the actions of thousands?
                                        Coth won't change for you.
You obviously find value here other than snark, otherwise you would have left without a trace.
I think we all go through a hazing when posting here... it's part of the learning process. Knowing several COTHer's personally, and experiencing first hand the tremendous knowledge they possess; I feel it completely worth it to post.

sorry OP but when people get riled up about things like "rudeness" it makes me laugh (is that rude?). This is a BB for goodness sakes filled with (for the most part) complete strangers that you will most likely never meet in real life! If someone offends you, ignore them. They will disappear from your virtual world. Or, take all advice given with a grain of salt and continue on your merry way.

Personally, I follow the latter. I find this board to be very informative, with a wealth of knowledge from very experienced horsepeople. I LIKE that people don't tell you your skinny horse is so preeeeeetttttyyy! or that horrible riding really doesn't look "that bad". There are forums out there that will, so if thats what you want to hear, I suggest seeking them out.
