Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Just to reiterate: Special Horses was able to do this because of all of you.

Special Horses is 501(c)3, and thus we can collect funds as per COTH rules, but everything beyond our minimal operating costs is dispersed to our current participating groups (TIER, Sunkissed, FLTAP, CANTER and Bluebonnet, all of whom, of course, are very reputable 501(c)3s).

Paypal donation sent! I too thinks it's terrible he was just left in a field. Reminds me of what the farrier told me when I first got my boy off the track. He plucked a pinch of his skin and said, see? Paper thin. There's a reason they're called the King's horses. Bred to do one thing and cared for by an army of people to do it. *shakes head* You can't just throw them out in a field and expect them to fend for themselves. They're not that kind of horse. And anyone that tells you different doesn't know Thoroughbreds.

Dribble sent--is this Sweetbaboo, the 2002 by Sweetsouthernsaint? If so, he's Lucky's "cousin" via Sweetsoutherncross's Tri Jet and Pia Star breeding. And same age. Poor baby.

And if she wanted to sell him, she should have tried feeding him first. Honestly, there should be an IQ test...

I wish I could post a picture of the Canter horse who lives here, back board owed over $3000. Hard keeper, totally fat and shiny, living in one of my turnout rugs. My farrier has shod the thing for 6 months for nothing.
there is some good in the world, I hope the previous owner of this horse and stupid BO get called on this.

I think I looked at his CANTER pic...

I am such a bleeding heart, I can't let the stray tom leave my carport without a hearty bite to eat, even though he is at war with my 2 cats...but having full care of an animal - I'd rather curb my vices, like coffee and internet , and go without before letting this happen!

Does this BO not know that having a rack of ribs in pasture is BAD for business?!

Grrrrrrrrr! Thanks to all who stepped up and stepped in to help SB!

One would think that if a person went through the process to get one of the wonderful CANTER horses, and found themselves in a situation where they could no longer keep the horse, they would contact CANTER or whatever rescue they got the horse through. One would think.

One would think the BO could have done the very same sleuthing that RacetrackReject did and contact CANTER instead of starving the horse while awaiting a sale!!!

Thank goodness RacetrackReject did her research and CANTER unhesitatingly jumped in.

Still shaking my head at the stupidy and total disregard of the BO and "owner".

AND...........Thank you to Special Horses, Swami Rabbit and the fantastic COTH Community for their recent absolutely fun fundraiser which has helped so many horses!

For clarification, I was just the crossposter in this instance. Jenarby and CANTER Ohio did all the work and should get all of the credit for finding out who the horse was and getting him out of there.

Pam at CANTER Ohio sent this to Jen:

"This afternoon I thought I would just check our PayPal account to see if any money came in. WOW!!! There was an amount of $1,358.38!!! It brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat to realize that people care so much especially at a time when Holiday shopping and preparations are taking a chunk out of everyone’s wallet. As I noted the donors, they were literally from across the country. There is so much interest in him that I will put up a special section on our website showing his progress. But I’ll wait until I’m sure of any legal issues that may arise."

I wasn't the one who got the ball rolling either!
The trainer who went to the barn to teach a lesson saw him and took the pictures. She then contacted Christy at Horsepower Company, who asked me if I knew how to proceed. I did some digging and figured out the name on the horse and also contacted Nancy at CANTER. Pam actually had been contacted by another boarder I think. So there were several people involved.

If there are any questions concerning what SB may be in need of, you can direct them to Pam : pam@canterusa.org

                            Update from Pam!
                            ------------
                            Merry Christmas Everyone,

Our boy is doing sooo much better. Yesterday he had his vet check and his initial signs were good enough that he is now up to a full scoop of grain (we give Nutrena Safe Choice) morning and evening and a ½ scoop of grain & hay pellets for lunch. He also is getting a dose of Zimecterin Gold, (de-wormer that I had on hand thanks to our Secret Santa) this week and another dose next week.

When he first arrived he had that look in his eyes that pretty much said he had given up. All he cared about was his hay and rarely lifted his head unless he was down to the last pieces and then he cribbed. But he remained calm and sweet and didn’t mind our grooming and scraping his legs (mud fever). Yesterday, he reached his head over the stall door when he heard my voice and spent the entire time watching the various barn activities. Baboo would now rather spend time having his face rubbed than eating and understands that the hay will be there. He goes out every day for exercise in the roundpen. We are not ready to put him with other horses yet just in case there is any kicking. But the roundpen is just a couple feet from one of the paddocks so there are other horses almost within reach, so he doesn’t feel alone.

Oh, I almost forgot. Baboo asked me to thank all of you for making all his Christmas wishes come true.

                            Pam

Not sure of the legalities here, but is it possible to release the name of the barn where he was "pasture-kept"? Since the BO doesn't seem to realize that there was anything wrong with that situation, surely she wouldn't object to publicity?

Not yet. I was told to wait until they figure out if/what charges are going to be filed. I think they are still looking for the actual adopter still with the help of some family members.

Fugly will probably release the names as soon as she gets them.

I'm glad to read that charges against the BO are being considered. IMO, she should be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

I'm not sure that abandoning the horse is a crime, but starving one certainly is. Perhaps CANTER can sue the adopter for medical expenses/transportation costs, etc.

Best wishes to this beautiful boy, and prayers for a complete, uncomplicated recovery.

Isn't the BO legally responsible for the condition and care of the horses on the property regardless of the owner's financial status with the barn?

I'm not really sure how the laws work in those cases. I know that they are looking into things though. Once that info is available we'll be able to release it.

I'm just glad that everyone got together this Christmas to save this poor horse. If you stare at his pictures for a couple of seconds, it just makes you cry how hopeful he looks, poor creature. I can't wait to see his "after" pictures. I hope he doesn't have any long-term damage from the starvation. I was able to send some dribble to CANTER Ohio as well and I can't wait to hear what the total will be, sent to help Sweet Baboo. I actually cannot imagine what it would be like to look outside at your pasture and see an animal starving to death in front of your eyes, when you have at your disposal, the simplest of cures...a couple of bales of hay. I know people do this all the time, but to have well-fed ( paid for) horses standing in the barn, and a starving thoroughbred, begging for food and water ( it's freezing cold this December, I'm sure ponds are frozen in that area) outside, in close proximity... just HOW DOES ONE DO THAT?
