Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

    • The first post, I thought she was venting. She may hate the dog but I didn't feel like she was completely irrational or inhumane, just very upset. I gave her the benefit of the doubt. I understand when people go through a traumatic loss they need to grieve and may say things they don't mean. I didn't think she meant any harm to the dog at first, she just didn't want to look at it, which I could understand.

Her next post was 2 hours later after she had time to think. Even if she wasn't thinking clearly, it wasn't a fleeting, knee-jerk reaction in the heat of the moment. THAT post is the one I have the problem with.

Nobody has come on this thread and said they are perfect. They simply said they have never wished harm on an animal for any reason. Those of you who have, I'm sorry for you. Clearly you have some kind of underlying issues that I hope you never act on. (And since you haven't come on here stating you would, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you can control your actions.) I hope that you realize that just because YOU have had these thoughts, doesn't mean others have. SPEAK FOR YOURSELF AND STOP THINKING THE REST OF US ARE LYING. I hate to break it to you, we're not! To the poster who said they've fantasized about their SOs ex on fire, that's just sick.

        • Well from my situation, I didn't act on anything I felt, of course I didn't, but it was heat of the moment stuff that I was thinking. I had no torture plans and I didn't beat the crap out of her or kick lumps into her, did want to. No I snapped on the rope while cry screaming and partly because I was watching my filly flopping on the ground in agony as well as being scared. There was not a damn thing I could do to ease her pain and suffering until the vet came.

And like I said, I did hate that mare, but she was handled with respect and she was well taken care of. I'd like to say it wasn't her fault and it was instinct, but it was way too viscious. It was a deliberate act.

So no I am not perfect, but I never harmed the mare nor would I ever. At the end of the day she was a horse and in my care, I had a duty to do the right thing.

            • I suspect that since the dog lived this long he is probably still alive. Well as long as he was in the OP's hands. HOpefully by now he has been transported to animal control or similar. Dumping a dog is not humane or legal and could result in heartache for someone else when this dog wanders into their yard.

I had two rescues waiting for homes (can they be fosters if they are part of your own rescue?) that tried to kill my (inside slipped outside) cat. They almost succeeded. I was as angry as the OP and ready to shoot them both. I didn't of course but asked my Dad to take them to animal control as I was heading into surgery the next day but he chickened out. I did find a home for one of them with full disclosure (city home) and the other just was not friendly enough. I tried to train her but then she killed my beloved chicken. It wasn't so much that she killed (yeah it was her nature) but that she would not stop no matter how much I screamed or pulled or beat on her. She was just too dangerous to have around a farm. Because even if you keep the bad dog secured you can't explain to cats and chickens that they can't cross THAT fenceline. So I had her picked up by animal control and PTS. I felt bad by then but I felt worse becuase had I followed my first instinct and have her put down at the cat incident the chicken wouldn't have died. So I would advise to get rid of the animal killer right away.

Not even a month later one of my other inside cats slipped out and I chased him all around in the dark before I caught him. I nearly had a heart attack both times!

Sorry, but peoplle waving hands and whinging "He's only being a dog" and "You're being so mean"....oh please. A neighbor dog was running after 2 horses, one injured and put down due to the dog. Bang! Dead dog and we hung him on the fence bordering the barn/his owners property...this was in Middleburg, VA...horse country doesn't tolerate livestock killing dogs.

If somebody's dog killed a barn cat...another "Bang" moment. I protect those I care about...I couldn't abide a dog near me who killed my cat.

                  So sorry about the cat.
Trak- the difference is you would have killed the dog quickly. OP wants to let it free and hopes it gets hit by a car where it might die a slow death on the side of the road or it might starve to death instead.

A bullet or a needle is humane.

Turning it loose to fend for itself is not humane for the dog and not fair to her neighbors or any of her neighbors animals.

I understand OP being upset. However I cannot justify just turning any domestic pet out to fend for itself.
Shoot it, have it humanely euthanized or bring it to a shelter and let them deal with the dog. If you bring it to a shelter let them know- NO cats.
Oh, well, clearly you're not thoroughly indoctrinated to COTH yet, because finger pointing and drawing conclusions are the cornerstones of this great online community. (Tidy Rabbit)

Oh yes because being outraged that someone would post TWICE - hours apart - about how they would love to beat a dog to death and throw it out with the trash makes ME the bad person. Oh-kay. If you haven't noticed after all these years, I do get a bit upset when people willfully abuse animals. In this case, it doesn't sound like she did, but she wants to and I found it pretty, um.......shocking.

The first post could have been a vent. Just getting it all out of her system. But the coming back 2 hours later and saying even worse things, seems a little alarming to me. You would think a person would be calmed down and more in control by then. You'd think they would say - gee sorry for the vent - I wasn't really going to kill the dog, I was just so upset. I will find the dog a home, or have her put to sleep at the vet ASAP. That would have made the whole thing a LOT more platable.

Exactly, it is one thing to be upset in the moment and say (or think) things that you don't mean. But to feel that it is ok to torture an animal (and IMHO, thats what turning a scared dog loose on the streets to starve to death is) isn't normal. A fleeting though is one thing and in a moment of rage I don't pass judgement on anyone's thoughts. Thinking it though and threatening to act on it is another and people who condone it are just as bad.

Also, we don't know that the dog has lived this long. The OP has not come back to tell us what she ended up doing. I sincerely hope that she realized that what she wanted to do is wrong, and that she comes on here and tells us that she was just upset and venting and didn't mean it. However, she has not, so we don't know that she has done the right thing for the dog.

Sorry, but if it were my pet the dog killed, 2 hours would NOT be sufficient time for me to "get over it"

                        • Trak,

Ireland does not tolerate dogs being dogs either. If your dog is caught chasing livestock, you get one warning, sometimes not even that. They will be shot. If your dog maims or kills livestock, chances are you will have to put that dog down and you are responsible for the full going price on those animals.

The guy that lives next door to me just got a dog he found in town wandering the streets. Really he can barely take care of himself never mind a dog. Anyway, the first day he brought the dog into the barn and it went to pee on the hay which he thought was cute. I nipped that in the bud and told idiot it won't be so cute when you have to front me the money for my hay and I also told him in no uncertain terms if that dog ever entered the fields with my horses (already tried chasing others), I will be dropping it off to the pound myself. Sorry people, the "dogs being dogs" really doesn't fly in certain situations.

Not defending letting dogs suffer in any way, but sometimes dogs being dogs excuses just don't fly.

                                • I was responding to her comments about me being a psychic. She posted that because of the thread she started in Horse Care to complain about her husband. I didn't even write the post, I only said I agree with it and she had a hissy fit. So now she's dragging that crap into this thread, and it's not relevant.

Exactly - Give her a break people.

Being a cat lover and having 4 house cats of my own, I'd be beyond livid and rage if one was killed by a dog. Any dog.

I'm sure EFF is feeling rage and heartbreaking sorrow simultaneously.

How would one of you feel if a dog or pack of dogs killed one of your beloved horses? I don't think much different than EFF is feeling right now.

Now, let's be fair: Every once in a while, someone finds a horsey website that has nothing to do with any COTHers and posts it so we can all rip apart the grammar, spelling, and pictures, and every time someone Googles the farm name the thread will come up.

I disagree. I would be tremendously upset and livid. I would have the dog euthanized if it were mine and I would probably shoot any dog I caught doing harm to one of my animals (be it horses, dogs, or cats). They are my responsibility and it is my job to protect them by any means I find necessary. I WOULD NOT just abandon the animal. I would make sure an agressive animal didn't harm another animal or person, I would rehome my dog to a non-cat home if he couldn't be trusted around cats but was an otherwise happy, friendly animal. I would never consider abandonment as an appropriate alternative to dealing with my responsibilities. Not only is it morally wrong, it is also illegal. I understand it wasn't her dog, and she may never have liked it in the first place. But, she did accept responsibility for it, whether she likes it or not.

Frankly, it's been a few days. I'd think you'd be more calmed down and in control by now.
