Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • =MistyBlue;5296735]I'd have no issues shooting or euthanizing a dog that had aggression issues or was a confirmed pet/livestock killer. Zero issues with that.
the deal is no one wants to kill a dog "just cause" unless they are messed up deep down in their self...like real deep

but no one in a rural area "normally" wants a dog that kills other things w/o being told to...odd-lows in town who want "killers" ain't right in their heads anyway...

so middle of nowhere turn left,an unwanted dog has limited options...people need to grow up and do what is right for their area

    • Yikes! When I left for the barn this morning, this fiasco had not gotten so heated.

I deliberately buy australian shepherds because herding dogs are bred not to kill. (Thank you Ernest and Elaine Hartnagle.) But I also rescue dogs, and have a 15 yoa south GA swamp dog of 98 pounds who was run over as a puppy in front of me on the way to court near the Okefenokee. This dog was aggressive to my dogs and cats when he grew up, and I had a little heart to heart with him about if he killed anyone. He didn't kill anyone, but if he had, I would have taken him to the vet and would have had him euth-ed.
So I'd put the dog down, have the vet do it, and move on. Abandonning a dog or taking him to the pound is putting the onus on someone else.
Do the responsible thing. Pay vet to euth him.

ETA. In the west, where my aussies come from, herding dogs who kill are euth-ed.

A person can be "down" without fantasizing about the ways they would brutally kill a dog in a fit of rage and revenge. I'd bet most of us have had some pretty angry thoughts fly through our head when we see something awful happen but this is the first time I have ever read a typed account on the internet of the abusive and cruel things a person would love to do to a dog out of revenge. I guess that's why I was shocked enough to make the comments I have. Nobody's perfect, but I do think the OP went well above and beyond the normal threshold with the comments made.

          • Ultimate responsibility

Let me first send condolences to the OP for the loss of a beloved kitty. I'm sure that this was a very traumatic event.

When I read this I could not help but put myself in this position and all I could think was that I would consider myself 100% responsible, however unintentional. It would be my decision to take in a dog that hadn't been raised with my cats, not the responibility of the dog's owner. However well intended, it would still be my choice. It would be my fault that the cat got out (however unintentional) and that the dog was let out with the cat, not the dog's fault. Perhaps the OP really knows this and is transferring her rage to the dog instead of being able to accept responsibility?

It's totally unacceptable to consider revenge on the dog and a very bad idea to voice those thoughts on the WWW. I hope that the OP has thought this through and made appropriate arrangements for the dog.

Or kicking it or hitting it with a shovel. OP, please rehome the dog or have it put down. Please read up on articles relating to predatory drift...instincts are hard wired in many cases.

I am sorry about your cat, but the rest of your post was unconscionable.

Actually, we are trying to discourage the OP from kicking the dog. Or stomping it; or bashing it in the head with a shovel; or kicking it out to starve, freeze, get hit by a car, etc, etc.

No. I feel for her and have lost a cat the same way. It's awful.

I work in dog rescue and have to clean up the effing messes left by people like her.

So you'll forgive me if I don't join in your effing group hug.

                    Loose/feral/abandoned dogs wreak havoc.

They pack up. They attack and kill livestock or pets. Many of them starve, or are attacked by wild animals. They are hit by cars and left to die on the side of the road. Or, cars swerve to avoid them and have an accident - injuring or killing adults or children. If help arrives, we find these dogs near death. Terrified. Hungry. Ridden with parasites or disease. Sometimes suffering from unhealed injuries.

They are in pain. Alone. Terrified. Hungry. Cold.

That is the reality of the abandoned pet. I hope you never have to see it - to hold such an animal and feel its bones. The smell of an infected wound.

Or, to look out your window and see an abandoned or loose pet taking down your foal, or chasing your horse, or killing your chickens.

THAT is the reality. It's why it is against the law to abandon a pet. It's why there is NEVER an excuse to do so.

Put the dog down by injection or bullet. Take it to a shelter. Contact a rescue.

                    Do anything except abandon it.
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

As someone noted, there are WAY too many lovely dogs and cats who need homes to ever put up with or tolerate an ill-behaved or psycho dog or cat. Euthanasia isn't evil or cruel...pity more horses running through meat auctions in PA and elsewhere didn't have owners honest and humane enough to put their poor horse down....but selfish enough to try and get every last nickel no matter how their horses suffered.

It's a hurt person releasing emotion...I'd suggest lightening up and some not getting holier-than-thou and I'm-above -such-emotions. None of us are.
Um, not so much. The problem is once something is said, it can't be unsaid. Anyone who's ever fought with their spouse/SO knows this. They aren't the only one's either.

The Law recognizes such things as real and viable threats. If it were a person, the OP could have been charged with assault (threatening imminent bodily harm).

Even in the depths of grief, and I absolutely understand the the OP is devastated, you are still responsible for your words and actions. And frankly, what she's put out to the world is not very flattering. The emotions are understandable, the ability to control them seems to be the concern. If one can refrain from saying awful things, they are much more likely to be able to refrain from doing awful things. Especially when the anger is probably being deflected from themselves.

And Trak? If you really believe there is no one here that would abandon an animal, you are living in a dream world. This place is in no way some sort of bastion for good behavior. No matter what people project of themselves on line.

Who are we to decide what's a "normal threshold?" People can and do fantasize whatever they want about whatever they want, without doing harm to anyone. This pile-on is very sad.

                        • I am so, so sorry for your loss. I live by myself and have a cat and she means so much to me since when I'm home she's usually my only companion. I would be devastated if a dog killed her, especially a dog that lived with me. That dog would no longer be living with me I've seen cats and dogs coexist in many families so I'm hoping when I do add a dog nothing goes wrong.
I agree though to please not just release the dog. Find a shelter or take it to be euthed! I can understand not wanting it anymore though!

                          • It's not like EFF said she wanted to go bash the dog's head in with a shovel in revenge, she said she wished she had hit the dog with a shovel in time to save her cat. She was fantasizing about the ways she might have been able to prevent her cat's death if she'd done something different/taken stronger action, not about revenge.

You can't possibly all mean you think it's cruel to hit a dog with a shovel that is actually in the middle of a cat attack, when the goal is to save the cat's life not hurt the dog. And if you do, well, I disagree, if I thought i could save my cat by hitting its attacker with a shovel I would do it in a heartbeat.

EFF also said dog was staying crated except for bathroom breaks until it leaves for its new situation, whatever she finds for it...grieving people who give killer dogs bathroom breaks from their crates are not your typical abusers IMO.

When I went out to put dog in her kennel-- outside now-- I had to really stop myself from the almost overwhelming urge to just kick and stomp her.
Looking back on things- I wished I had just grabbed a shovel and bashed her head to make her drop my cat.

And I wouldn't have bothered to bury her- I would have put her out with the trash
It’s not just that she wished she’d broken up the dog fight – she wished she’d killed the dog violently on the spot.

                                    • Trak and its following just can't resist getting in on the "killin' threads" eh?

I know that a large part of humanity is sick, I get it, but it is unpleasant to be reminded.

Trak, I don't understand (and I shouldn't feed it but...) if your Mule killed a cat would the mule not then deserve your savage solution? Does your mule know the difference between the small furry creatures that you are ok with and those that you want dispatched? Mule is just doing what comes naturally right?

                                      So what is the difference?

The dog did what lots of dogs do, it didn't kill the cat to spite the op.

Danceronice. What the hell does replacement cost have to do with anything? Really??

                                      Such a stupid conversation.

OP, please let someone more mentally stable deal with the dog, you are in no shape to.

                                      Poor cat, poor dog.

Seriously. Put it in the car, take to shelter. I won't dignify dumping it by calling it 'redneck' behavior because my 'redneck' next-door neighbors would shoot, sell, or take to the pound a problem dog, not throw it out of a car to fend for itself, chase other people's animals, get hit by a car, cause an accident, die of disease, etc.

I think shooting a dog who kills cats is a bit OTT, but then if a cat is outdoors it's going to get killed sooner or later unless it's both VERY smart and VERY lucky. (We have six barn cats. One is ten or eleven, the next-oldest is five, all the rest are two or younger, and they get fed, watered, shots, and parasite controlled. Yet there have still been at least five or six others we've had in that ten years.) In this case, it was a freak accident when the cat got out. But if people want to quickly and cleanly shoot a dog, that's one thing. If they want to take it to the pound, okay. Beating it to death with a shovel or dumping it somewhere is not okay.

ETA: If a cat dies, I can go grab one of those barn cats. Free. If a dog dies, $50 + whatever I have to spend at the vet on a shelter dog. If the dog kills the cat, well, if I kill the dog, it's going to cost me more to replace it and the cat's already dead. What is killing the dog going to accomplish? Likewise, if the dog starts chasing deer, ticket from the DNR at minimum and they'll shoot it, if it attacks the horse, I can't replace the horse easily at all. So if my dog kills my cat, what does killing the dog accomplish except adding to the replacement costs? Everything is cost-benefit analysis. Why would I destroy the more expensive and difficult to replace animal in retaliation for killing one I can easily replace?

                                        • So am I the only one here thinking that the authroties should probably step in, read these posts and REMOVE THIS DOG from this woman's posession? Because seriously, I have a real problem with what's been posted. If this woman is this furious with the dog, who knows if she will feed and water her, or who knows if she'll just snap and beat the dog to death? Wow this is truly one of the most disgusting threads I have read on coth. And a person this unstable doesn't need to be running an animal rescue.
