Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

By that rule, we would never have a need for shelters or rescues because everyone that owns a pet is an animal lover and would never BEAT or STARVE or ABANDON the animal! noooo.

    Head in the sand much?

And yet, you feel that its ok to let a dog starve to death, scared and alone? The dog was acting out of insticts. You, however, can think about your actions and still want to be a horrible person, which IMHO, makes you worse than the dog.

I felt bad when I started reading your post, now I just feel disgusted.
Agreed 100% I am totally disgusted that anyone could hold such hatred for an animal that they have cared for for months. To just turn it loose and let whatever happen happen is just as wrong as the original owner. And you would/should be held responsible for negligence/abandonment of the poor dog. If the original owner does not pick it up, take it to the vet and have it euthanized but do not simply throw it away!
I am disgusted and have no respect for you. I am sorry for the cat!

Because someone in this world has to! Just because the dog’s owner thinks throwing it on the streets is A-okay, it doesn’t make it right.

Lulu is gone and unless there are other cats at risk, it’s purely revenge against an unsuspecting animal to do anything other than find them a better home.

            • Wait a minute, Trakehner, we had a cother who bragged about killing (and eating) horses and bragged about killing stray cats and said he killed his own dog when it bit his daughter or granddaughter, i forget which.

OP should take it to vet and pay to have it euth-ed, as many have said here. And as others have said, since OP probably feels guilty for letting the cat get out of the house, she wants to punish the dog. And why post on coth if she doesn't want feedback?

As for horses harming animals? Not mine. I've always had the horses who were careful not to step on barn cats: who thought aggressive dogs were just trying to be friendly, etc. But I have been at barns where horses had previously killed dogs that got into pastures and paddocks. And my dogs do sometimes catch squirrels, but even old Quincy the 98 pound dude gives them to me and I raise them and turn them loose.

And it's nice to see the Christmas spirit have everyone turning on each other. Merry Christmas to all. Zu Zu needs to come back on and jingle for all.

BTW did anyone see the horses in California in the flooded paddocks up to their girths? Are all of our California cothers ok in the rain storms?

And, when a dog shakes a cat, it usually means a broken neck, so trying to give CPR is not going to help.

As someone noted, there are WAY too many lovely dogs and cats who need homes to ever put up with or tolerate an ill-behaved or psycho dog or cat. Euthanasia isn't evil or cruel...pity more horses running through meat auctions in PA and elsewhere didn't have owners honest and humane enough to put their poor horse down....but selfish enough to try and get every last nickel no matter how their horses suffered.

It's a hurt person releasing emotion...I'd suggest lightening up and some not getting holier-than-thou and I'm-above -such-emotions. None of us are.
are you fricking kidding me? Are you in that much denial? I know eff from pm's and emails. For her to state such a thing, makes me truly wonder the kind of person she is. But, more so, why your trakener would think someone is just venting.

we all know internet protocol...you are going to get slammed for not being politically correct, and eff has been slammed a lot regarding her horse mgt, and I HAVE DEFENDED HER AND CALLED MANY ON THIS BB A BULLY FOR THEIR ATTACKS ON HER.
Maybe they read her better than me. EFF, if you are reading this, I hope you are willing to do the right thing. otherwise, as I originally posted, you are no better than the scum who abandon horses.
Your authenticity is BS. If you harm this dog, you are scum, and you get to live with it.
trakener,do you know EFF, do you know for sure she is only venting?
I feel I know her a bit more than most from private pm's and emails, and wow, oh wow, I didn't think she had this in her. I guess we read people wrong?

that is a bit nasty, Tamara. You posted earlier at your disgust, but have to now attack someone who thinks this is a deplorable way to treat an animal.

Astonishing, absolutely no one here has wished death upon something that just turned your world upside down.

Look at the time of her post - 3:22 AM. Obviously this happened only hours before.
Sorry, but I cannot excuse anyone for venting like that.

I live alone, I have no one to vent to. But, I am certainly not going to come onto a BB and talk about abandoning an animal, or putting a shovel in its head.
Grief and anger are one thing, but what EFF posted is a bit more than that. She sounds rational and clear in her intent.

On top of that. I have horses, some I don't really care for. One tried to kill me thru a bite on my neck. Did I dump him, do I treat him poorly...NO. He gets treated the same as others. He was abused, and he reacted. Yes, I did think of euthanizing him, but I knew it was his mental illness...and no, I didn't need to exert my revenge.

Aside from that...this is a public forum. I would think people might get the fact that there is a certain 'decorum'. You don't say stupid stuff unless you want to be attacked.
This was beyond acceptable, and I consider EFF one of my 'coth' friends. I am not so sure anymore.

For anyone to find this ok, sorry, I guess I just don't feel you are in very much control of your own emotions that you feel it is ok to excuse or accept inappropriate comment or behavior.

What if someone said this to you in person...would you find this ok? Grief and things we say are one thing.
If EFF said, I want to kill this dog, I want to set it loose and abandon it. She did not choose those words...she made it very clear it wasn't thought, but action she was going to take...a very big difference.

                        LuNa is gone now.

I agree with you-- passing the buck to the dog ain't right. I was just saying that I understood why the OP was not, at present, interested in being the one person vis-a-vis the owners who was going to stand up and do the right thing.

If I read it right, the owner's reaction, "he11-- just turn her loose then," would add to the frustration.

I won't comment on the "dogs will be dogs" part of the innocence of this one. I know opinions and tolerance for dogs who kill animals, bite people, chase livestock etc. vary.

"I believe" that my filly that is laid up right now with a severe limb injury, would not be in this position if it weren't for a crazy Arab mare I took in for free. She was advertised on the net and sounded absolutely wonderful. The owner fed me a huge line of bull about how spectacular this mare is. I agreed to take her sight unseen. She was on my farm 2 weeks and it was a total nightmare the entire time. I have never in my life seen such a mentally fried, screwed up horse.

The morning my filly was hurt, I had brought in one of my other mares to the barn, and the crazy Arab mare went BEZERK. She was so freaking herd bound she was dangerous. She was running the fence and screaming her head off, which got my filly excited and worried.

The filly started running around all hyper and next thing I knew she was hopping on 3 legs. She's now on 6 months stall rest, and one vet has suggested I euthanize her because she does not think she will heal.

In my heart I had a tiny bit of anger for that mare causing the filly's injury. But logically I knew that animals will be animals and that sometimes chyt happens. And really I was the only one to truly blame for taking in the horse in the first place. I cared for the mare to the best of my ability for another week until I drove her 5 hours back to where she came from.

Not at any time did I downgrade my level of care for that crazy mare. She got exactly the same care and attention every other horse did because I knew it wasn't her fault she was so nuts. Every day when she was spinning around and trying to double barrel kick my head off, I was setting out her bucket of grain and vitamin/mineral supplement.
Just because you have once again made a thread all about you, I would like to point out how interesting it is to see how the story changes, Auventera. Here is your original post on that now 4,672 page thread on your poor filly:

Yesterday Le'Sorna went out with everyone else, running around bucking and playing like normal. They were a bit hyper from being inside due to freezing rain.

I went out with a load of manure and noticed her having a slight headbob, looked a bit off on the right front. Figured she strained something so I went out to feel for heat/swelling. There was none. Cleaned out hoof, looked fine. Could have stepped on a stone? <snip>
Not one word about the wacky mare. Not one. Just a story about horses acting goofy in the chilly weather and the filly going lame from one moment to the next.

And by the way, if your newest version is true, you are not the only person on the planet who has had an animal injured because of the actions of another. Believe it or not, forgiving an animal for being an animal is not an automatic "in" for sainthood or something.

Back to the trainwreck. I'm almost sorry I said anything way back on page 1....

                          • Oh crap, did I miss that on the other thread? That the mare did it? Pass the blame please.
I agree with everyone who says different people feel different ways about incidents like this (with the dog and cat, not with the filly is in pain, the fill is fine, etc.)
However, I am a firm believer in euth-ing unwanted animals rather than passing the buck to others or punishing the animal by torture. I've held lots of animals, unfortunately, while my vet euth-ed them and it's the best way to go, if an animal has to go.

                            • I am so sorry for your loss. I understand completely. I would also find another place for the dog immediately.

Yes, I know it is just being a dog --- but it was your relationship with the cat that was special to you, the dog was a favor to a friend. You have your own path to walk. Let it be a dog elsewhere. I would not suggest that you just 'let it go' however!!! Try a rescue or AC if no one takes it.
