Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I've not ordered from them in the past, but they've been fabulously supportive of rescues. And if I ever have extra money again, I'll put in an order with them (I support those who support us ).

Their email list manager service may be having a problem/be broken. You could try sending them an email, letting them know you've asked to be unsubscribed more than once, and ask them to fix it. If our email lists' unsubscribe function wasn't working, I would want to know!

The emails are annoying but I just try to delete them. I've ordered from HorseLoverz in the past and I will continue to if they have what I want for a good price (and if I don't need it in a hurry!).

If I can find it somewhere else, I do. Horseloverz is the worst for frequency for receiving emails/announcements among the companies I order from. It doesn't help me find deals, just annoys me. My reasoning is if you need to spam your customers, you must need to try that hard to do/keep business. One odd thing that happened recently...placed a small order (under $20). I was charged twice for it. Called and they said I was the one that placed two orders, one by credit card, one by paypal- but I don't have a paypal account. It was fixed of course, but after a callback a day later.

I buy from them quite a lot and have never had a problem. I don't love the email frequency- but it often times alerts me to a sale or free shipping - which leads me to placing an order- so I'm betting it works pretty well for them.

I have ordered from them before. Shipping is slow, but when I wanted a specific model of paddock boot in a specific color, they were the only ones who had them. Prices are good, and there is usually a coupon for free shipping or something online.

yes, the incredible amount of emails they send out can be annoying. But, just flag them as spam and hopefully your email provider will filter them out.

As for the actual site, I ordered from them once and thought they were great. The even honored an old sale that had expired because it was still up on their website.

I get catalogs in the mail from places I've never ordered from and while I occassionally will find something, for the most part they get recycled. But, I do read them because you just never know if you'll find a good deal!

I have also ordered from them before and have been pleasantly surprised with how quickly I received the items and I'm in CA. They will even price match if you find something listed for less on another site.

I like them even more now that I know they donate to rescues!

After learning from these posts how much HorseLoverz does to support rescue groups, I will definitely make more of an effort to shop on their site. I am a firm believer in rewarding companies who do go deeds with my business!

snkstacres and DressageGeek's word is good with me...if they're that supportive of rescue I'll definitely give them my business if they have what I'm looking for (and they seem to have good prices.)

LOL, a complaint thread gets them a customer who'd never even heard of their website before!

I'm addicted to it. I found it, and ended up ordering a ton of stuff because it was such a good deal, like full seat breeches $20, blanket pads $5, the brass hose nozzles that cost $8 at Walmart are $5 there. The first order was so great, though it took a bit, and I had about $100 in coupons, I ordered again. This time was there half off sale when ordering over a certain amount. I got a $900 saddle for $450, boots, a great winter blanket for $50, etc.

I've never had any problems. Lately I've been checking and it hasn't been that great. It's part of the game. You have to be persistent to get the best deals and figure out have to navigate their site. And, they will price match. I was shopping at midnight one night and sent an email for a price match and got a response within a half hour.

If they have what you want, it can be a SUPER deal.

I've ordered from them a few times in the past and will peruse their website from time to time too. I love the thrill of the hunt though and generally only buy things when I can get great deals, 50% or more off, free shipping, but x get y free, etc. I'm the same way shopping in person too though. If I need something purchased for next day reasons, I go to a local tack shop of which we are blessed with several in the area. Otherwise, I shop online and deal with whatever shipping time or lag there may be. Never had a bad experience with HorseLoverz!

I haven't had a problem. They were the ONLY ones to have the Tough1 dog blanket in the color I wanted, all for 13 bucks, and the specific brand of gloves. They are no "smartpak" but for occasional things I would not hesitate to use them

Nothing against the company but I am annoyed by all the spam e-mails they send out. Of the 100 spam e-mails in my spam box, 96 were from Horseloverz...I don't use them just because of the annoyance factor.

I've had nothing but great experiences with them. Sure, they spammed the CRAP out of my inbox, but all it took was a couple of clicks to get off the mailing list and I've never gotten another. I've had WONDERFUL customer service and have ordered numerous times. Maybe I'm smoking crack though because I'm probably one of the few who wouldn't order from smartpak again. Now THEY royally pissed me off and I completely swore them off.

I buy lots of stuff from them and we use them for many of our horse show prizes because we watch all those emails that you hate for the best deals on things we need. So I don't mind them at all. Takes a second to delete what I don't want to see. We have had nothing but good luck with them plus I found great stuff at their booth at the Horse Expo in MD last winter!

Tack of the Day, not so much. Too many emails and when you try to buy anything it is usually sold out in all but a size no one needs.

I get more spam from those Rolex watch people. The difference is, those get filtered straight into the spam box. Not the HorseLoverz. How do you think I find out about the shipping deals?

Like I said, I'm using a different provider and type of email and there's not filter. Just makes it more annoying.

I'm going to try ONE more time to get off their list.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this many emails just downright annoying. Maybe they do have deals, but seriously, this many emails? Maybe they should just get more people to go to Facebook and look at their deals of the day, rather than bogging down email servers.

BTW, I also got an email with an apology for the unsubscribe feature misbehaving. It's nice to know it's a glitch and not one of those deliberate things with no way off the list.
