Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • My parents will farm sit for me for Christmas! Now, where should we travel to?

YIPPEE! My parents have offered to farm sit for me this year!! I have been stuck on the farm for about the last 5 Christmases, so this concept is beyond exciting for me! I have people I can trust to watch my farm so I can leave; what a rarity!

My boyfriend and I are now trying to figure out where we can go. Any suggestions? We are on the West Coast, but we can and will happily fly ANYWHERE! Warm climates would be nice, but are not required. Domestic or international. I would consider flying to Europe, but where? The only place I have been to is Holland about 8 times.

    Ideas?

I'll be in Colombia. Should be a great time, and the plane tickets are cheap ($550 total per person). We have hiking, white water rafting, cave diving, salsa clubbing, snorkeling, colonial city exploring, ruins visiting, and just general hanging out planned. Should be a great time!

I have spent a total of 6 months in Guatemala, and it is a strikingly beautiful country. The people are great as well. I would live there if I had a chance. (Some real cute horses as well!)

Costa Rica has fabulous beaches (but big hotel chains have started to figure that out).

PM me if you want to talk about Latin America-- I've been to Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Costa Rica so can give recommendations in those places.

Never been to Europe but will make it across the pond soon. I'll probably go to Africa next!

New Zealand or Australia would be nice to visit this time or year. Europe is really cold right now...not a great destination unless you are into skiing or inside stuff.

Hawaii is a good place to go too and much less expensive a plane fare for you already on the West Coast. In Hawaii, the sky is the limit, on places to go and things to do. If we go back, we'd stay on Kauai...it was our favorite island...but honestly, they were all wonderful to visit.

We did a 7 day cruise on Norwegian Cruise Lines and got to see a bit of all of the islands. You might be able to get in on short notice, filly a vacancy and get some sort of good deal. It was surprisingly affordable when we did it.

          Great News!

Go to Hawaii. With the short travel time you can spend longer there . Go to a resort and get pampered, Lord knows you deserve it!

Look for some last minute resort packages or a cruise. How long do you have -- if it is limited, then try to keep the time spent traveling down to a minimum. I would not do Europe from the West Coast -- way long flight, plus they are having epic cold there right now. A nice resort in Hawaii, Mexico, Arizona or a cruise sounds really tempting.

A cruise sounds really tempting to me right now! My parents had a fantastic time at the Atlantis Resort a couple Januarys ago.

                How long?
                Kids or no kids?
Are you looking for some serious downtime or do want some activity or a bit of both?
What about boyfriend, will he do whatever or does have a certain type of vacation in mind?
Do you want heat/sun or not?
How about food? Do you like to search out restaurants or would you prefer the all inclusive thing?

Thanks everyone! Yes, CDED, a think a vacation is LONG overdue!

                  Mozart, to answer your questions:

                  1) About 5 days.
                  2) Neither of us have kids.
                  3) I am in serious need of relaxation! We would like a mix of fun, adventure, and downtime.
                  4) Well, the boyfriend likes to do the same things I do, be it in sun, surf, or snow. We tend to spend most of our time doing everything together while on vacation.
                  5) I'd prefer sun and warmth, for sure! He is a bit pinker skinned, so he can not handle as much beach time as I can.
                  6) As for food, our primary cuisine is sushi, so we will hunt down an excellent sushi place and eat there almost every night. We were in North Tahoe 2x this summer and found an amazing sushi place in South Lake Tahoe. Went there twice on each trip! Yum!

I'd say Kauai, my favorite of the islands. It is the most lush and exotic and has fun adventurous activites...kayak and hike to a waterfall anyone?

Or, my fiance and I had a blast in Belize a couple of years ago. With just 5 days, fly directly to Ambergris Caye. You can then plan a "mainland" excursion (I reccomend the cave tubing). It is exotic enough you feel like you went far away, but it is easy to get to (just a couple of hours from Dallas). If you had more time, I'd reccomend splitting your time between the beach and the jungle. In the jungle, we stayed at Duplooy's which was awesome, and they have a barn with horses on-site so even got the man to go for a horseback ride. It is the one and only time I have seen him on a horse!

                      Puerto Vallarta

I would say Puerto Vallarta then. Pick a resort not too far from the old town, maybe all inclusive for breakfast and lunch and then you can hunt out great restaurants for dinner.

You can relax and read by the pool, grab an umbrella for your boyfriend and when you feel up to some adventure there is lots to do in and around Puerto Vallarta. Just don't waste your valuable time at a time share presentation.

Might be harder to find a deal at Christmas time but check out the last minute deals on travel websites like expedia, red tag travel etc.

I particularly like the places around P.V. like Barra de Navidad, Bucerias and Yelapa.

                      Have fun!

How about a Sandals resort in the Caribbean? They are wonderful and romantic to boot! Hubby and I just came back from the Bahamas and had a blast, loved the whole place and the resort just topped it all of! Fully inclusive, liquor included....just be warned, you WILL put on weight!
Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

Was that sushi place Mikuni's by chance?

Another vote for Hawaii here, mainly because I'm itching to go. Plus, you're on an island. Plenty of fish to consume, although you have to also eat the spam sushi!

Also, there are a lot of adventurous and historical things to be seen, plus a good heavy dose of beach sitting and mai tai drinking. If you go to Maui...lots of hiking to waterfalls, that big volcano who's name I can't spell, helicopter tours, snorkeling black rock. Fare to island hop is also pretty affordable, I've been wanting to visit Molokai to see the leper colony out there-when I was younger, I wasn't able to.

We went to Holbox Island near Cancun in May and had a wonderful time. We were helping at a spay neuter clinic, but also had a wonderful vacation for not too much money. Holbox is off the beaten track, but has wonderful beaches and restaurants.

                              Nicaragua!

It's very affordable, fantastic people, relatively opn beaches.

San Juan del Sur has fantastic beaches, or you could travel to lake Nicaragua and stay on the island (my vote!). It's a little rustic though, so you'd have to enjoy staying in a clean, but very simple hostel and just chilling on the beach or with locals

                                Kauai!

My husband and I just got back from there. It was everything it's built up to be and more. I cried when I left. I felt like I was in heaven. Kauai is paradise, heaven, bliss.

We stayed at the Marriot Resort in Lihue (gotta get the Marriot points!) without kids and I loved it. It was very beautiful with stunning views and grounds. I felt like I was staying in a palace.

We hiked, we snorkeled, we explored, we got massages, we walked along the beach at sunset, we vegged by the pool and beach, we ate tons of sushi - we are huge sushi fans as well.

Go to Kauai!!!! No passports, no currency exchanges, just easy paradise! I can't say enough good things about it and I can't wait to go back.
