Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Retirement Board in WNY/Central/Upstate NY?

Just exploring my options and thought I'd put a shout out. Anyone know of retirement boarding options in the Western NY area, primarily?

I've got a couple leads but just thought I'd see what COTH has to say.

We're in Saratoga, not western NY, but we do a lot of retirees and broodies, so just to give you another option. PM me if you'd like more info on what we offer.

I highly recommend Tom's... lots of turnout, absolutely awesome care. If Sam needed layup board I'd bring him there. Their only disadvantage is being farther out and not having a big indoor...

HOW do I always forget about Tom's?!? He definitely flies under the radar, which is a good thing.....

Not bothered about an indoor, or the commute at this point, providing the care is good.

Tell me more about Tom! There is also an ad on the Rochester Craigslist right now for retirement board in Dansville (I think).

I know that SMF11 does retirement boarding. I'm not sure where she is located in NY state, though.

I don't know her personally, but she strikes me as a fair and honest person based on what's she's posted here. She seems quite knowledgable.

Good lord! What a nice thing to log on to and find!

Thank you mkevent, but I think I am too far south for Flashgordon. And because I am closer to NYC I suspect my "retirement board" prices are more like "full board w/an indoor" prices for western NY :-(

Although I've seen a picture of her horse (if it is the gray one) that has stuck with me -- he has a very kind eye -- so he'd be welcome here any time!

I was going to suggest SMF11 but someone already beat me to it and it looks like she's in the wrong part of NY.

If Win ever heads south for retirement of course he would be coming to my farm.

Flash, I'm sorry you didn't post this about 18 months ago when I was looking for a retiree to keep my boy company. I've got a good boy in now, but if something happens, I'll try to get in touch with you.

I was offering free board for the right retiree. You would have to pay vet and farrier costs and provide any supplements and appropriate turnouts and come visit as often as you could. But the key here is that I require a lot in vet care - to the basic tune of $500/yr with annual wellness exams, blood work, selenium checks, vaccinations, dental etc.

I'm not saying let's go kill all the stupid people...I'm just saying let's remove all the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out.

Ah Sue would have been perfect! I know you are a fan of the big greys too so he would have been some nice eye candy for you.

SMF I thought of you but remembered you were closer to NYC. Yes in our corner of the state, cost of living and such is ridiculously low! It is the horse you are thinking of, he is a sweet old dude. I've only had him a few years but feel as though he deserves to be looked after and so I am doing all I can to make sure he's enjoying his "golden years!"

OTB, my dad is flying back to Nashville next Wed., shall I pack Win in his carry-on??

It is nice to know so many of you guys would be willing to have him as a boarder. I'm still trying to figure out what will be the best option for him, and for me I guess! I love having him nearby so I can still pop in and see him, but I know some of the better situations for him may be further away.

                    Anyway thanks all.

Our horses are not seen as the old and disabled they may have become, but rather as the mighty steeds they once believed themselves to be.

Lori-I know that you have the courage to face the ugliest in humanity and keep fighting for those that don't have a voice. I can't tell you how much I respect and admire that.

I thought I'd share a story about one of my boarders. He came to me one day just stopping by to inquire if I boarded horses. I really think it was divine intervention, because both he and his horse have made such a positive impact on my life.

His horse is a retired racehorse that he has owned since the horse was a yearling. Being a newbie horse owner, I guess it was beginners luck that the horse ended up being a successful racehorse. When the horse began to have a few issues with becoming a bleeder, he was retired from the track. The owner took a lot of flack from everyone because the horse was a money winner. But he just wanted to do the right thing for the horse. He actually put away all the money the horse earned and earmarked it for the horses retirement. The horse is now 21, so he has definitely gone through the retirement fund, but that doesn't matter.

They moved here almost 3 years ago. He comes and visits his horse and grooms him 4 times a week, like clockwork. His horse absolutely adores him and he adores his horse. When he thinks I'm not looking, I see him kissing him on the nose. This horse is one of the kindest, most sensible horses that I have ever met.

What's really cool is that this boarder has taught me how to believe in myself. I've always tried to be a fair person, but often lacked the inner strength to stand up for myself. He has taught me how to overcome that just by being honest even if it means the other person might not like what you have to say. I always kept everything inside because I was deathly afraid of confrontation. In short, I have learned to become a stronger person. I have my boarder to thank for that.

I believe that things happen for a reason and that we all have lessons to learn from our experiences.

I'd like to believe that for all the sadness and cruelty that you deal with daily, there are as many unsung heroes quietly doing the right thing.

Aww thanks Lori. But really, I'm just doing what loads of decent horse people do. It isn't always easy, to be honest. In fact a lot of the time it is really hard, mentally, financially, and physically. But it is important to me that he never end up in the situation I found him in 2.5 years ago.

You're the one that does this selflessly, day in and day out, so kudos to you!!

mkevent that is such a wonderful story. Made my day.

Wishnwell, I'm outside Buffalo. I should have provided more of this info originally so will add it in now...

Basically looking for someplace with safe, ample turnout, riding facilities not necessary. He can live out but needs to be grained, at least in winter. He'd probably prefer a stall in inclement weather. I'd like somewhere that will check/swap blankets, look him over regularly, groom occasionally. Hold for vet and farrier.

He's not on any supplements, no special needs. Easy in the barn, no vices, perfect gentleman really. Goes out with anyone. Barefoot.

Right now he's at a full care boarding facility outside Buffalo. I trust the owners implicitly but would like a situation where he is turned out more, and also set-up to take care of his basic needs like blanketing, grooming if needed, holding for appts., things like that. I will admit to being an absentee owner these days so I want to know he is 100% taken care of if I'm not there.

I'd like to keep him within a few hours of Buffalo so I can visit and check up on him. I have considered sending him South quite a ways.... selfishly I'd miss him though it is still a potential option.

I'm currently paying $285 in board plus an extra $100 a month to another boarder to look after him as I've been relatively absent.

I have a bunch of PM's I need to respond to, thanks to ALL who have contacted me!!

Flash, I do hope you find a good fit for Winn. I know it's out there. Both of you deserve it. I honestly don't know how you manage with 2 young children in the first place!

Uh, can you tell I don't have kids?

If you can't find something closer to home, there is a person on this board, Lawndart, in Central PA, that does retirees and I'd recommend her highly.

Aww Thanks Sue. I had finally gotten back to a once-a-week schedule which was great, but my daughter was hospitalized last month and is dealing with some serious health issues. She's doing ok but she will spend much of the winter/spring recovering. So... this is one of those sad times when horses truly have to take a backseat.

But it is important to me that he remain happy and healthy and well cared for. The barn he's now really is great, but it is set up for people who ride and owners who are there several days a week... not for an old horse with an absentee owner. I'm sure we will find the right living situation for him. I know the universe has a way of working these things out!

Again thanks to all for the PM's and suggestions. COTH is so great for networking and I appreciate all the tips.
