Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

my Judgy Pants may be my favorite item of apparel.

That said, I use them as appropriate. For example if you use your boyfriend's riding accomplishments from 15 years ago to rationalize that you are an excellent horse trainer...well...ON GO THE PANTS!

I do not like seeing skinny horses alone, but when the owner/rider is overweight, I really can't take it.

Why would you assume that that person is an idiot? They could be a poor person, a newbie, or maybe one that has a seriously hard keeper? Or maybe that someone just bought the horse? Really, an idiot because they are fat? Like it is a scientific fact that as your weight increases, your brain power decreases? I'm sorry about the poor sentence structure-this fat chick is too stupid to be spoken to so I didn't learn.

BTW, I know some heavy riders that are great riders and smart people too. Sometimes, they get a horse that is thin, and to evaluate it, they may ride it for 15-20 minutes at a time so as not to stress the animal, while they are trying to make it as fat as they are.

What am I judgemental about? People that assume that because one is chubby, they are stupid and beneath them...

Even my vets didn't say, "You know you should look into getting either straw bedding or bag shavings instead of wood chips you found on the fire trail because those wood chips are sharp and they don't absorb much moisture and you need to build a bed for your horse to encourage her to lie down from time to time. Because there's no way she can comfortably lie down in that rocky little 'corral' your daddy built you." Nope, they just delivered their service and turned a blind eye. I do remember them suggesting we give more hay though. She had no grazing whatsoever because our front yard was not fenced in and rope burns were the alternative.

Anyway, I have since worked for top barns and trainers and I know better. But I know better from reading and observing or by someone I worked for saying, "Do it like this" and my following it to the letter. But no one ever had the decency to share their knowledge when they saw all of the obviously wrong things I did. I hate that.

So, I suggest all of you who have an eye for the 'correct' or the best way to do something, try to find a nice, supporting way to share your knowledge and advice without hurting the not-as-knowledgeable. It is for the good of the horse.
BRAVO!!!! I like this advice, and hate that you didn't have help with your first horse.

I'm judgmental - it drives me nuts when people spell judgment wrong!!!!

Regarding horses, I guess I'm not too judgmental. I don't like a lot of bit in harsh hands, I don't like horses who look like they've never had a trim. That's about it, assuming horses that are healthy.

            I feel free to judge.

I don't like to see fat people on horses. We should not expect horses to work hard, if we aren't willing to.

I hate when people say they "lounge" their horse. Oh really, what does that look like?

I hate when people walk their horses down the aisle with a bag of carrots and distribute them like a Pez machine every time the spoiled horse bumps them for one.

I hate the term "do dressage." What does that even mean? Dressage is simply training...do you mean you ride in lots of circles? Use a dressage saddle? What are you trying to explain by "doing dressage."

I hate hate hate the term Natural Horsemanship although there are some skills within the genre that are useful. When people say they "do NH" they are 1) lying, nothing we do is natural, and 2) trying to impress upon everyone else that their way is better.

I cannot stand unruly horses whose owners/riders will not work on disciplining them. Everyone can have a bad day but not even attempting to manage your horse is stupid, and risky for the rest of us.

            There's more, I am sure...

I'm not talking about horses that aren't heavy, I'm talking about obviously underfed horses being ridden by obviously overweight people.

I find that person to be an idiot because they obviously do not understand even the basics of how things work. Food=energy. Too much=overweight. Too little=underweight. It is a fairly simple equation. I have no problem with an overweight person being overweight or riding a well taken care of horse. I too know quite a few heavier riders that are fantastic at what they do. They also feed their horses.

Oh, sure. I didn't mean to come across that way. I have seen plenty of low-end places where the horses are happy, healthy and well-trained and the riders are great.

I'm talking about people with delusions of grandeur, who are in no way as talented as they think they are. People with dangerous/stupid training methods and no riding skill at all. Who think it's a great idea to breed their grade draft stallion with their pinto TWH mare to make a "warmblood" (true story). The people who have not one ounce of self-awareness and are convinced they are the best thing that's ever happened to the horse industry.

I, unfortunately, have met many people like this...

I'm sorry, and I know it's the internet so you might not mean it this way, but you sound like exactly the kind of condescending horse person that irritates the out of me.

"Do dressage" and "natural horsemanship" are shorthand. They are useful because everyone knows what they mean. What do you expect people to say?

Dressage DOES just mean training, but it is also the 100% world-accepted name for a specific discipline with specific goals and a specific riding style. If we used dressage to just mean training, everyone would be confused. "Oh, that gelding is nice but he needs more dressage over fences." HUH?

Natural horsemanship is the same way. It's an accepted label for specific types of training. Now, I hate the whole shebang, but the name is what it is. Say it and people know what you mean. That's what language is for.

And also, if there's one thing I hate, it's people who assume losing weight is just about working hard. Sometimes managing weight is a pain in the !@# for our equine friends too...haven't you ever owned a pony?

If it makes you feel any better, I never share any of my opinions with anyone at the barn. I learned long, long ago that advice and input is not desired, nor do I like it when others give me advice. So I am polite, quiet, and smile and nod and do my own thing.

It's not the terms that bother me it's how people say them...nose in the air..."I do dressage." or laden down with gadgets and a handbook, "I do Natural Horsemanship."

People who really do what they proclaim to do, just do it. People aiming to make a point to others, need to announce it. That's what bugs me.

I still don't like to see overweight people ride horses. I feel it's not reasonable to the horse.

I think you and I might be talking about different degrees of overweight. I'm 5'10" and chubby, but well within the 20% of the horses I ride. If a woman is 5'1" and 170, she is big for her frame, but still a very reasonable weight for a horse to carry. Do you see what I am saying? What is fat for one person is healthy or thin for another, and as long as the rider is balanced, the horse doesn't care. Your judgment of the hypothetical 5'1" woman is purely your own problem.

Now, if you are talking about big, big riders, as in too big to be reasonably carried by a horse, then I agree.

Oh, I am VERY judgmental about anyone who is a "natural" horseman. Because I assume they're an idiot. The assumption in the name is that EVERYone else is "unnatural," and that's just idiotic, and presumptive, and REALLY annoying.

I didn't make a comment about your weight at 5'1, neither being aware of you, your height or your personal weight.

The thread however is entitled "How judgmental are you?" so I responded with my personal bugaboos.

Of course they are my problem, that's the whole point of the thread, LOL!

I didn't say I want to do horrible things to people, just that I judge. If we weren't judgmental at all we wouldn't be on this thread...

As far as the weight goes, I'm talking about people who are bouncing around pounding on the poor horse's back, imbalanced, etc. If you're not that then there's nothing to worry about.

Chubby, and obese, really aren't the same thing.

So to clarify for anyone on the "judgmental" thread that's suddenly super sensitive:

OBESE people on horses upset me and yes, I judge them. So does George Morris.

Well...I have to agree...and when I see a big person jumping a horse, I grind my teeth and smile but like you, keep my opinion to myself. But my back sure hurts for that poor horse who does what is asked.

Just so ya'll know, I am no skinny minny either, but neither do I carry a lot of extra weight. I am 5'9" and have lost 45lbs and intend to loose another 20lbs too, but the holidays make it harder on those who diet. My Quarter Horses are older blood lines, a bit of TB thrown in for good measure so they both are 16H and one is built like a brick wall!

The whole point of my post was to clarify, because there is a big difference between "I hate fat riders" and "I hate seriously obese riders who are also incompetent and unbalanced."

It doesn't help their cause that so many of them are painfully useless when it comes to training horses I am sure there are good ideas for each program, but I have met so many NH proponents who don't have a clue that I wince when I meet one now.

I judge people based on their grammar. Okay not really but sometimes I really want to Things like their/there/they're

Other than that I'm not too judgmental though I do hate when I see a horse suffering and the owner continues to work it. That really bothers me.

I totally totally agree. Dressing your horse with a skull and crossbones motif, now that's class.

Judgemental is not an incorrect spelling. As this is an international discussion forum, it's a matter of where you are from.

I think most of us can be judgmental at times - I know I don't mean to be and try not to be. But I don't understand being judgmental and proud of it. Being rude and condescending and looking down on people isn't something to be proud of....
Completely agree. I am certainly not proud of the times I am judgemental.
