Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • temp ratings for blankets.

what temp would you have a horse in what fill blanket?

It's goin down to 19 degrees here, without the windchill... for me and my sorry southern keesters. that is F'n cold.

I have medium weight rhinos on two of my horses and a rambo duo on the third.

I can layer stable blankets under turnouts if I need to, but I want confirmation of what I suspect are approiate temps to layer up for.

The hairless TB is going to get her stable rug on with her med weigh weatherbeeter taka freestyle crap thing on because it has a better drop than her rhino and will cover more of her.

The Old Man, is going to get his stable rug under his Rhino because the Rhino is plenty long for his short self.

and the Other woman is going to have her rambo duo on with the heavey liner on.

since I've been put on modified bedrest all of this blanket changing has to wait until the husband gets home in a little over an hour or so... so I'm turning to Coth to kill some time.
If i'm posting on Coth, it's either raining so I can't ride or it's night time and I can't sleep.

Sounds about right for a southern hot house flower. Are they stalled at night?

My guys are all over the place. One TB gets very cold (it's supposed to be 13 tonight with high winds, he has a 200 stable blanket and 300gm liner and needs it), one TB gets moderately cold, QH rarely gets more than a med weight (except when it's very cold AND windy). We have a new boarder coming that rarely gets a blanket at all. Of course, mine are stalled at night in the winter but the barn is an uninsulated tobacco type barn (double box stalls, though). I don't have a run in and there is no real windbreak to be able to leave them out. And, believe me, around 4:45 they are at the gate begging to come in.

Just make sure they have plenty of hay and unfrozen water. They'll do fine.

no barn yet, so yep.. everyone will be out with their round bale and their bucket of hot mash and a freshly topped off stock tank. Mir and the Old Man are originally from PA, where we blanketed too, but we had stalls in PA to get out of the weather in, and The Other Woman, is from Iowa, so they KNOW real cold, but Mir looses weight like crazy in the winter if she isn't blanketed and the other two are in their 20ies and get WAYYYY too stiff if left naked.

I would leave them out in the pasture too, but ever since The Old Man found the front porch, I just don't trust them to be out overnight... not until the tape that limits their access to the house is HOT again. (yet another thing to add to DH's very very long Honey DO list.

I think your blanketing plan is appropriate.

And glad hubby is going to do the blanket changing! Or I'd have to come down there and drag yer ass back to bed!

I had to get the blankets out for him as he has no clue where I keep anything or whos is whos... and it was a first time for both of us on putting the liner on the duo. So I blanketed my two, AFTER I put my foot through a stool in my dressing room of my trailer... AFTER I retrieved Mir's extra extra blanket after husband's stupid DOG pee'd on the blanket I was planning on using... stupid dog.. grrr...

So the slightly modified plan for Mir is an OLD med rhino with a med freestyle taka whatever thing... and apparently my fattening of the red one is working as I had to let the belly straps out 3 times until I got it long enough to reach. (yes, I have two taka freestyle things. bought one on sale and the store mailed me the wrong size, so they sent the correct size and didn't want the wrong size back. soo... it's a spare for when I have to layer... like tonight!

HAHA... ok.. I'm done rambling now.

while you were here, I'd have you change Mir's blanket, cause she's not Mr. C's biggest fan... she tolerates him... but I don't think she would tolerate enough to let him double blanket her.

Well then let the guy inside if he's knocking at the door for heaven's sake!
No blanket changes needed if they're in the house.

Faith is currently in a medium weight waterproof older Weatherbeeta with soft flannel lining & fiberfill. She has a light to medium winter coat & I just feel better knowing she has something to cut the wind & keep her dry (she's actually much happier in a blanket, she hates the wind) When the temps go back up again, she will be back in her light sheet.

Your plan sounds like mine How do people in colder climates do this winter stuff!?? I mean, this is freakin' ridiculous

My body clipped gelding has access to his stall in the barn but can choose to go out also. Barn area is heavily wooded so helps block the cold wind. Supposed to be low 20s here tonight with a wind chill in the teens so I'm going for a 180g med weight layered under my 220g rhino wug. That gives me 400g and I'm hoping that does it! It doesn't normally get colder than 30ish around here in the winter, otherwise I wouldn't body clip and cause myself such grief about whether I've blanketed my 21yr old horse well enough!!

That's my guide too, but it all depends. Some horses just don't need that much blanketing. I've got at least one who doesn't get a blanket (unless it's raining) until it's below freezing. We have one coming who doesn't get a blanket until it's below 20 (or freezing if windy). So, it all depends. You need to be able to figure out if your horse is cold and blanket accordingly.

it's kinda funny, my guys LOVE their blankies, Mir will stand statue like to get her blankie on, she seems to be able to tell that I'm not 100% because she has been extra saintly with me lately. She still is a snot to Mr. C, but a perfect angel for me. (she also knows that I will not tolerate ANY BS from her)

The Other woman loves me for her blanket too.

The old man was kinda grumpy today, not sure what his problem was other than Allen put his cold hands in his blanket to check and make sure they weren't too warm.

It never made it out of the mid 30ies today. Freak'n BRRR. I have tried to abide by my death sentence of bedrest as much as I can with a 2yo boy running amuck. So I haven't been out to lay hands on them personally, but DH checked on everyone before he left for work and fed. THey were pretty funny- they were all standing in a sun spot asleep a good part of the afternoon.

I don't have plain waterproof turnout sheets, I've been looking for what I have wanted for two years and just not found it.

so I go by the weather, 45 and below and raining or very windy = med weight waterproof turnout. When it gets to the low 20ies or teens, I start to layer at night.

Mine are all out 24/7 not clipped, they're wearing mid-weight Rambo Wugs in this cold snap in SC.
They have run-ins and do go in because I put the round bales inside. We built boxes in the back corner to enclose them and keep the horses from climbing onto the bales.

I made sure to top off the water tubs tonight and disconnect all the hoses. Will probably have to break ice again in the morning.

Lots of hay, a warm blankie and they'll be fine.

My unclipped horses would be dripping sweat if I blanketed this heavily. It is in the 20s here and they are in either a medium or heavy, depending on the pony and their internal furnace. None of them can wear a heavy in the 30s, and I don't put anything on until it's in the 30s and they go straight in their mediums unless it is raining in the 40s, and they get a sheet. They are fine in their heavies to well below 0.

Above 50* naked, with a fleece after work
Below 50* medium weight belly band (not out if raining)
Below 32* out during the day in same blanket, in at night.
If there was no option to bring in, i'd probably do a heavy and a neck rug

I'm in Charleston (also have lows of 19 tonight)... my guy has his heavy rambo wug on tonight.
My horses blanket chart (not shaved and lives out 24/7):
Below 60 AND raining- light sheet
Below 50 AND raining (OR below 45)- medium blanket
                                  Below 30- heavy

So he's naked until its going to be below 45, unless its raining.

after all this layering crap. I have decided that I want rambo Duos for my other two horses. Those are nice easy to use blankets.
If i'm posting on Coth, it's either raining so I can't ride or it's night time and I can't sleep.

I dunno, I have one for my horse that i used to clip. My former BO didn't like it, she thought it was a hassle to switch the liners and preferred to layer his medium and turnout sheet because she could take the sheet off without having to remove the medium, where to switch the liners she had to take everything off. Since she was the one doing the blanket changes I let her do as she wished, but the duo was a big old waste of money for me. YMMV, just wanted to share before you spent a lot of money on something you might not like.

No kidding! My clipped pony has been happy in his medium weight and it's been in 20-30*. Above freezing and the BO keeps an eye on him during the day and will switch to just a sheet if he gets too hot in the medium (he's in a sunny paddock). He'll get his heavyweight once it gets below 10*. I've never needed to layer beyond his heavyweight.

The unclipped guys are going naked during the sunny days in the 20s, blanketed at night with just medium-weights (they live out 24/7 with access to stalls, which they never use).
