Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • It's Winter and I Miss....

... my riding tights, sleeveless shirts and Smartpak ribbon flip flops, thinks I as I put on four layers prior to heading to the barn to ride. I can't even get my tall boots over my snugly winter breeches and heavy socks, so I have to bend my holiday pudge down to zip up my "fat chaps". I feel like a sausage. Or the little brother in A Christmas Story who was so bundled up he couldn't put his arms down.

And I haven't seen my horse's ears in weeks. They've disappeared into a mass of chickie fluff. I'm even beginning to feel a bit nostalgic about the smell of fly spray.

The first day of winter is still over two weeks away. Whhhaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!

      I'm with you, SmartAlex!!

I also hate when you're getting changed after riding and you bend down to pull off your breeches and your stomach touches the tops of your thighs-and it's COLD!! Ok, maybe if my stomach weren't so ample I wouldn't have this issue but it catches me off guard everytime it happens.

It's also tough when your instructor and fellow students all head to Florida leaving you alone to wallow in self pity. And boy do I wallow!

I just hope last winter never repeats itself. That was the worst winter ever!

        LOVE this weather!
It was 40, sunny and brisk here today. Temp dropping down tonight. I think I actually frolicked when I was outside with the dog today picking up branches in the yard, bringing the horses in after draining them and putting the winter covers on the outside furniture.

It's so nice getting stuff done without melting or slapping bugs. Horses were all frisky and so was the dog.

Everyone has different preferrences and tolerance though. I love cold weather, happy as a clam when there's a snowstorm and temps in single digits. However no way would I want to live iin areas that have arctic cold way the heck below zero!

I miss everything about summer.... I can't think of anything I like about winter. Well, maybe being able to wear big oversized sweatshirts.

I've been wishing for summer again since September. I hate the cold with a passion. It dropped down into the upper 50's this weekend and I am miserable. I hate having frozen toes and fingers, having to warm up bits, and having to stuff myself into multiple layers of clothes to stay warm. Bring back the 100* and 90% humidity and i'll be happy. Georgia simply isn't south enough for me

I like it too! It was low 40s and sunny here today. Perfect riding weather. No flies and no super sweaty horse to try to dry out after a ride. So, far, I'm good with just regular breeches, boots, long sleeved shirt and fleece vest, plain old leather riding gloves are still warm enough. Plus, horse has some energy and my legs don't have to work as hard. I'll change my tune in January when it's bitterly cold, but this high 30s-low 40s is pretty nice.

Ah yes, the long lazy days of summer. I vote for missing them too. I love the longer day light hours, the sleak summer coats, the easy rinse off after a ride, horseshows in the RV with cookouts and late night cocktails. I think I miss the sun the most.

but winter has it's benefits. No bugs, no oppressive heat. I like when the ground freezes and stays frozen so we can continue turnout but the rest of winter and horsekeeping I could pass on.

I was just wondering today in fact what it must be like to live in a climate with no real change of seasons. Just hot, hotter and mildly warm - like out west or Florida. I bet they get a lot more done without the frantic rush like we do. I know that we have to pack a year's worth of farm maintanance into half the year because the other half is too dang cold, muddy, or dark to get any outdoor projects done. How does the other half live?

Ahhh my people! I absolutely HATE cold weather and the dip into 30 and 40 degree temps has me FREEZING. And crossing my fingers that we don't get a lot of snow. Thankfully this is my last winter in college in Pennsylvania so next year I will hopefully be living somewhere a lot warmer during the cold months!!

I also love an early morning ride in the summer. Horsekeeping and riding is just miserable in the winter.

I miss the light. It's pitch dark before 5pm. I'm ready for bed by 7!

And I miss the dry ground. Horses are out tonight because it's dropping below freezing, although the pasture is still virtually soup from our torrential rain yesterday. But they only tolerate a few days of being "in" (60x60 dry lot) before they get mad. No riding in weather like this.... waiting for the snow....

Our winters are mild (especially by my standards) but I miss the light. I get all the work horses done during daylight, but often my personal critters are not worked enough this time of year due to simple fact that I'm less motivated to work after it gets dark. I love my critters but when you ride all day... There are all kinds of justifications for giving them the season off, believe me.

Otherwise not much trouble here. Moving from a harsh winter climate to a mild one makes life easy, many of my clients think I'm nuts for riding on "cold" days which are moderate by my standards! I'll ride in just about anything so long as I don't think it will cause more problems then I can overcome (ie. I don't ride a young horse for the first time on a particularly cold and windy day). But the light...I find myself going from wanting to sleep 8 hours in the summer, to 10+ in the winter!

I miss being able to get my knapsack on and off without contorting and gyrating because I have on so many layers...I miss being able to hang at the barn in the peace and quiet while my horse grazes because it if I don't keep moving I freeze to that spot.

I miss the fall weather - mild days and cool nights.
I don't miss having to shower and change clothes 2-3 times each day because of the heat and humidity. Not to mention how it affected my critters this past summer and all of the flies and other nasty critters!!!.

Two good things about the cold - no flies or other bugs, plus the frozen horse apples don't break apart

I miss...nothing! I love the naked trees, the cold air, the snow, and the gorgeous red winter sunsets! My perchie/qh loves it as well, and plays and plays with the youngsters this time of year. In the heat of the summer, not so much.

I miss being able to actually get into my car and go to the barn and see my horse--this is what my husband's car looks like this morning, *after* half an hour of digging:

As for mine, I can't actually get close enough to it yet to take a picture. Sigh.

I miss being able to ride in the field at 8 PM, not having to pile on layers of clothes or wear gloves, and jumping into the pool after doing the morning feed and chores.

I DON'T miss: the flies or trying to figure out a way to peel off sweaty, sticky breeches after a ride. And I definitely don't miss having to watch Rico like a hawk to be sure he's sweating.

The sun. This week has been overcast with only a few short glimpses of the sun. Luckily, mud season has not set in yet, but I fear that may be on the way the weekend. I REALLY dislike being cold, so aside from being able to wear my super comfy fleece breeches, I have nothing nice to say about winter.

ETA: OK, having looked at SarahandSam's photo, it could be worse. Yikes!!
