Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I have no issues with proper safety measures, but please....our Border Service lets countless truckloads of slaughterbound horses across on a daily basis, yet they are cracking down on this?

editing to add: I find some of the comments appalling, to say the least!

Could very well be, I have no idea. My ongoing beef with importing horses is about the failure of Border Services to actually be informed employees who know the regs.
I am all for proper quarantine guidelines, but like you say, it should have been apparent that the papers weren't in order, when the animals in question entered the Country.

I saw that article on Saturday too and I am really hoping they find a solution and do NOT put those horses down. There must have been miscommunication with the shipper as well... "because they thought the horses were coming to the Royal?"

If those horses are in QT anyway, can't they extend the QT and do all the necessary tests?
I don't know if I want an update on this... and if they send them back.. it's not like they can get on the next plane, I am sure!!

Sorry, Laws and Import regulations are in place for a reason. There is a very simple solution to this. Ship the horses back to France, ensure proper paperwok in completed than re-import the horses back to Canada. And in the meantime, sue the individual you initially hired because they messed up.

I saw an interview on the Toronto Sun website with the owner, I get a feeling there is more to this story than we are getting.

I understand paperwork and all is in place for a reason- but it is cruel and just makes no sense to stress this poor horse by sending it back just to reship it when all that is needed is paperwork!

Sounds like the owners are willing to let whatever happen, instead of sending them back and then chasing down the importer for screwing up the paperwork. She stated they are "day-to-day" on this?? Please. Be proactive.

I'm curious what the rest of the story is. Also, it stated seven horses were imported, five released, the two stallions remained...and one died inside. Uh, math isn't my strong spot, so maybe someone can catch the issue I'm having with counting five horses + two horses + one horse = seven imported horses???

I agree with the count... math was not my strong point either.
I am just wondering too how soon after the horses had been in QT they realized they had the wrong paperwork! I would be more upset with the correct paperwork but the horse is sick...

There has to be more to it and I just hope the horses do not pay the price.

It sounds like she one is at risk-maybe two--both stallions. Were the ones
released mares and/or geldings? Seems to be the disease is a veneral one
so that's why the stallion(s) still in guarantee. Very wierd...some pro-active
actions are needed by the owner. Doesn't bode well, would gelding the
stallion solve the problem? Better than the horse being put down.

Posts: 62 I am very familiar with the story and the situation. My stallion came in one day before her stallions did. My stallion went through all of the quarantine process to make sure that he doesn't have the disease. I owe this to myself, my other horses and the entire industry to follow these rules, particularly when there is so much that could happen as a result of not following these rules.
The story with this lady is that she is the one that directed these horses to be brought in under temporary permits. She is the one that stated they are going to the Royal. Then she wanted to take the horses away from the importer. He said no, they can't be removed. He said that he would have to deliver them to the Royal Winter Fair for the competitions and then remove them to go back to his facility to be brought back to France. That is how a temporary permit works. this importer makes his money on quarantines, there is no reason for him to falsify papers. However, he then found out that the horses were not even entered into the competitions in the Royal.
The importer makes paperwork according to what the client specifies. He has no right to question it ... he just does it. However, if, for example, in this case, she wanted to remove the horses, he has the right to say no, the rules are not being followed, for the sake of the industry and the health of the industry.
The woman in question does not want the horses test bred because it will make them too studdish. Well, in my opinion, don't own stallions or geld them.
She has lied repeatedly to everyone and now she's getting caught in her own lies. Today, there will be a conference call with her, her lawyer, the importer and all the vets trying to figure out what to do. There is written proof as to what she wanted done and there are also witnesses that heard her say her requests.

My stallion had to go through all the proper channels for quarantine ... and I had to pay the price. Naturally. So, the next stallion that I bring over in 2 months, I can import without a quarantine? Just imagine the flood doors this will open if her stallions are allowed to stay without quarantine. Of course, logistically speaking, why would I want to pay an additional $4,000 if I can hire a lawyer and for a fraction of the price not have him tested properly.
Does everyone see where this could go?

Not good. Not nice from her side to put this industry at risk with these stallions, sick or not, and with future importations not following the rules that have been established.

This is a very sensitive subject and I give high praise to the importer, Brian Doyle, for standing his ground and protecting the health of the industry.
I have imported many horses with him, some worth over $500,000 some not. Whatever the value of the horse, he does the job correctly, passionately and according to the rules that have been established.
I know that I can sleep at night that there is someone out there doing this, respecting the equestrian industry enough to take care of it.

I thought there was more to this story and so it seems there is. This person tried to circumvent the system and is caught. Ship the horses back to France and import them properly. End of story.

                              Thanks Enya...
There had to be two sides to the story and the importer would not jeopardize his whole business and excellent reputation by falsifying documents.

Why on earth wouldn't she want to do the QT? Would that then be sufficient? Isn't QT much cheaper than sending the horses back to France? I hate to think we are both from the same country!!

I hope all ends well for the horses AND the importer.

I'm not convinced. On the other discussion forum "Enya" states that Brian Doyle, the importer, is just such a nice guy and doesn't want to go to the media. Hmmm, he's a business man who is being completely lambasted in the media to the point that I suspect a large number of potential customers wouldn't use him, but he's just "too nice" to state his side of the story?

Whoever is at fault - it's not the horses. Someone who has $60k kicking around to import her daughter's 7 horses and buy a facility surely would be savvy enough to check that the paperwork is in order? Right now, both sides of the story sound questionable.

Unofficial update as per poster on EMG

Just a quick update ... the horses are leaving the country.
The ending consensus on the conference call last night was pretty much that she lied, many times and the horses have to be out of the country by tomorrow.
Everyone is very eager for this to end. The Federal veterinarians want nothing to do with her ... the vets at the airport want the horses out, etc, etc, etc.

This is a waste of time for everyone. Rules are not being followed ... well, up on the plane they go and fly back to France. End of discussion.

It's funny how the newspaper didn't mention anything specific about the case of the horse and what the true nature of his death was.

                                  ...

The horse that died had an ulcer on his intestine. He was brought over to the clinic to be looked at. He was euthanized at the Milton clinic.

                                  ...

I don't care how you're privy to this information BUT I wish someone would get in print the other side of the story. To show how she was dishonest and the REAL reason her horse died. It wasn't from neglect and poor feed etc. He was given excellent care but had a medical issue. Why didn't that come to light. She then used the death of that horse against the fellow who quarantines the horses. Making him look like the bad guy and not caring properly for them. He has a great reputation and she has tarnished that. They should print a retraction or a follow up article to show the outcome. She has been such a manipulator and using the excuse of only being 21. I am sure her mother has been involved. I don't know of any 21 years olds with 7 high end horses. Obviously her family does though.

Just hoping the trip won't be too stressful for the two stallions, but wherever she shows her face in Dressage... I can just imagine the welcome she will get.
