Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

      • Holy cow! I've been gone all day and just opened the Finger Lakes thread to three new pages!!! Yippee!

I'm so glad to see Powerful Storm being seriously considered. On the day I went to pick up Tally for Lazy Pony Powerful Storm was being led and I almost fell down spinning around to get another look at him. He's just a great looking horse and so polite.

And I love Ladylovesdiamonds, so cute and athletic looking.

        Good things are happening!

        • YAY....so happy that Power Storm may be headed to a new home. If I had an empty stall he would have been my first choice! Can't wait for updates!

TXjumper: fingers crossed for you too! She's a lovely mare.

I have to add that I have 2 FLF and my 14 yo has done a significant amount of riding on both. Chequer was 2 months off the track and DD was helping with the training. And although Grace didn't see much saddle time until this summer, DD has done 90% of the saddle time. I think much depends on the horse, but a competent teen could easily take a OTTB on as a project. And I agree with up-at-5 that these horses make GREAT Pony Club projects. DD has taken Chequer to numerous PC lessons and he has stellar manners. She'll be taking him to a games rally in a few weeks!!!

TooManyChickens (love the name, BTW), I am crossing all my fingers that it all goes well with the PPE and Powerful Storm comes home to you. I shipped my FLF with the Florida trainer referenced to in the 2 posts: couldn't have been happier. Very reasonable rate, very accommodating and super about communicating. My horse looked great the day I picked him up and he only had had a 5 hr rest period between getting off the trainer's rig and getting into mine. The trainer's place was orderly & super clean, all the horses I saw there looked great. That trip was supposed to have been the last one for the season but a friend in NY needed horses shipped down to Tampa Bay Downs so the trainer was busy cleaning his trailer and getting ready to return to NYS (that was that week of the Dec storm that blew into the NE and had many people in the FLF thread gritting their teeth and worrying about all the horse trailers taking FLFs to their new homes). If I needed to, I'd ship with him again in a heartbeat.

Hi hALTERtag! Please take a spin on my website and check out Brooklyn Betty from the 2009 Graduates page http://www.apinchofluck.com/Brooklyn_Betty.html. Her mom Allie is only twelve years old, and got Betty about four months after her last race.

Please feel free to also visit Lithos Beach, Selah, Nagging Nana, Makwetti, and Coleslew, just to name a few. Each of these horses went to riders under the age of seventeen, and all have competed successfully with said riders, some in as little as three months.

A good pair, a good trainer, and a little bit of patience, and these horses can do anything. I love to show off my kids to the skeptics! We prove 'em all wrong!

I cant have two legged kids, so I guess he figures I might as well have as many 4 legged ones as I can feed...hmmmm.....pinch of luck, you going back anytime soon?

Oh, and give Rocky a kiss for me, I think he is at your barn!
Will do on the kiss for Rocky! Is he your kid??

I have a mixed-bag batch of kids arriving on Saturday/Sunday (three from Fingerlakes, one from Buelah, and one from Mountaineer--I'm getting brave ), and hope to do at least one more before the track closes all the way down. Would love to share the load with some of you.

I have one filly that pretty much for sure will be coming down, and have a trainer at Mtn. who wants me to take a rescue on that she rescued... He needs another 2-300 lbs, and I just can't pass... That's why I do this, and though my heart will always belong to Fingerlakes, I have to lend a hand where needed. You can check out Sidewinder (his name) on Canter's South Ohio site... I'd like to get these two down her, and maybe a third, but any takers for slots on and two (and possibly three!) are more than welcome. My shipper is AMAZING!!!!!!!

As stated above, Relocated, you're more than welcome to share the bus with me. Things really wind down just before Christmas, so one more load may be all I get down until spring. I'd love to share the fare if you're really interested! It's a lot cheaper than you think, a lot less scary in bad weather, and way easier on the backside than sitting in a vehicle for 44 hours (it's easily 22 one way, and this I know from experience... we used to pick up ourselves, and after load four or five, a near death experience in the above mentioned storm, and too many miles to ever forget, I said fagaddaboutit, and got lucky enough to meet Athena!).

                  • I have to chime in about kids riding FLFs. Both of mine are kid-friendly and were from the get go!! Reggie was supposed to be a lesson pony/kid's lease, but ended up going to the trainer's mom (in her 60's wanting a quiet mare).

Eddie was hands-down the easiest horse I have ever known!!! I swear, I have NEVER seen the horse act up - certainly not under saddle. I was prepared to send him off for training, but ended up keeping him at the farm where my daughters (15 & 18 at the time) and I brought him along ourselves. When I finally did send him off to a trainer to be sold, he was finished up and greatly enjoyed by a young teen. Now, I'm seriously reconsidering my decision to sell him. He's such an easy horse. He'd be the ultimate children's or junior hunter, but he's awfully nice for this old amateur. He's absolutely the same whether he's worked daily or has a week or two off. Steady Eddie. I love that!

LOVE that boy, oh is he a gem!

I will keep in touch as far as travel arrangements, etc.

                        • I have a call into the frequent Florida transporter. No calls back yet.. hopefully I'll hear from him soon. Waiting for calls back from vets... I HATE waiting... I just sent off a few blankets to get repaired so he has something snuggly waiting for him when he arrives.. I really hope it works out.. I already told my other OTTB that he might be getting a new buddy, and I swore he said "I might share my hay. But only if he's cool." I told him Storm is from New York, so he's already cool (heh) plus, he's a FLF. Can't get any better than that!

                          • Foundationmare, you mentioned Dynomynt. I have to tell you, he has quite a story with me on a couple levels.

My second retiree after moving to Georgia was a huge bay mare by the California stallion High Brite (who passed away this year ) named Brite Lassie. We got her Memorial Day weekend in 2006, and she was with us until November 6, 2007. She had a really minor pasture accident involving a stick and a spot just above her hock. Long story short, the wound found a way to communicate to the joint, and eleven months later, my Lass-girl was gone. She's the skinny bay mare in the red halter in the photo collage on the top right of my website pages--that photo was taken the morning after she got to Georgia on her very first turn out... It's one of my favorites of her, skinny and all. I have been on a quest to find a horse like her since she died, and none have come close.

Lass came from wonderful connections who have assured me that some day they'll help me find a High Brite who doesn't want to be a race horse, but his death this past year is going to make it tough. His last foals will come in 2011.

Enter Dyno, who I think is going to end up being called Brother... He came down to me without papers and no clear spelling on his name. I tracked him through equineline's tattoo search, and lo and behold, his dam is a mare called Dynomite High... who is a daughter of High Brite. But I didn't know this until I'd sent him down as a buddy for Fort Montgomery in Perry--my friend wanted to try him out. After I found out, I crossed my fingers that it wouldn't work, and yay!!! It didn't. Turns out he's a recreational cribber, and Jim just can't deal. So back he came. Oh darn!

Dyno/Brother is so much like Lass it's uncanny. I got on him for the first time
on Wednesday night, and affirmed for myself that there is a reason that I have been searching and searching for something I almost started to believe wasn't even real. He moves just like her with the biggest shoulder you can imagine, his saddle slips back like hers did (arggh), and when he opens up his trot stride, you feel like you're going to fly out of the saddle. It's amazing...

That's my story, and why he'll end up being called Brother.... I know he's really a nephew, but that's not the greatest of names I hope to have him with me a long, long time--it's just going to be a matter of convincing my other half that I can hoarde on this one. He's a once in a lifetime guy!!!

Eh, too much Northern Dancer for me, unless you're not going to breed (at least not to a TB. I only look at mares with an eye to breed.) But she has a fuzzy face. How can anyone resist a fuzzy face? (And short. After mounting a horse from the ground this weekend after having to find things to climb to get on Lucky, I cannot overemphasize how nice short can be.)

If there's a load going south again, people really should fill it up. You want iron-horse bloodlines, there's always Dewanna Brushon Me (as in Broad Brush, can't go wrong there). And I for one wouldn't object to McGlamery Road giving me that sideways look over the stall door every morning...
