Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Darn it I typed out a long report and it got eaten somehow.

I spoke with Keely this afternoon. I guess the sale went pretty well.

Most of the horses my trainer wanted me to look at (not Mark, but Hillary - she starts my young ones) went for a lot of money (i.e. over 1000). Those ones were Willard K, Herb Avore, Tap Silver Ghost and one other whose name I'm spacing out. Barnwell was a no sale. Keely is calling his owner to find out what his "real" price is. He is not listed on canter. He got up to 650 but did not meet the reserve so was a no sale.

      I'm getting Alacart:

      http://homepages.apci.net/~keely/pad...le/alacart.jpg

She is not one that Hillary particularly liked (she looked "hot" to her), but I do really like her. I am hoping she can be retrained as a hunter (notice the shoulder and the set of her neck) but if she doesn't want to be retrained...I will consider breeding her. She was going to be fire saled for 300 to someone who sells to the killers. Something about that mare just caught my eye. She's big too, I like that. Apparently she was horrible in the sale ring and no one wanted to bid on her. But...poor hting has been in her stall for two months, of course she's nutty.

One of keely's friends when home with a whole trailer of horses that cost less than 500 each. Some horses went for as little as 150. That's LESS than the price you can sell a horse to the killers.

does anyone know what happened to Pretext, I forgot to ask Keely. She was another mare I really liked.

Thanks so much for the update -- I've been thinking and worrying all day about the auction. Is it possible that NONE of the horses went for meat? I SO hope so . . . .

Keely has posted a brief report on www.exracers.com.
          Highlights:

One CANTER supporter went home with 8, all acquired for around $300.

A lot of the ones we all liked went to sport horse trainers for over $1,000.

Barnwell was a "no sale". She is trying to contact the owner to see if they'd be interested in making him a CANTER horse. Let's hope!

And... Bell Buzzer goes to the TRF, courtesy of the Virginia TOBA. Thank you so very much, Virginians!!

LEPEnterprises...Delmar showed us Alacart in early August and she was one of two mares that his son hopped on and rode bareback with just a halter. While she had a little spirit, I thought that she was pretty well-behaved for the conditions on the backside at the time. I think that that you will get along just fine. Please let me know how things progress with her.

Also, another owner at the track said that Delmar is a tainer that you can trust when buying.

              Good luck.

Bah I might have spoken too soon about my new mare Alacart I spoke to her trainer (super nice guy) this evening, and he told me that someone is coming tomorrow afternoon to see her. If they have money in hand they're going to get her (because they called him first - and I can't wire money till Monday when the banks are open).

I told him it was cool, as long as she's going to a good home, I am happy.

LEP, isn't Western Union open on Sundays? Or do they only take cash? I honestly don't know their procedure, but I thought they were open on the weekends, at least...
Good luck with the mare, she's a cutie!

Well guys I got a report from my 2 friends who went to the auction. They said there were only about 30 buyers total there. : ( But they went early and talked to a lot of people and feel that they got some good information. They bid on several horses but only came home with one Tap Silver Ghost!! And he did not go for 1000+ like was previously posted. He no-saled at 250 and they bought him privately. It's easy to get confused with so many horses : )

Pretext went for a good amount of money 800-1000 they thought. So she definately got a good home.

There were a couple of really nice sporthorses that went for 1500+ to trainers. Overall the sale was good. There were some horse traders there of course. My friends tried to buy a horse that the trader had just bought offering 100 more than they had just paid but they said no, you'd have to pay double : (

Ohhh I wish I could have been there. I hoped to borrow my Dad's car for a road trip (mine probably wouldn't make it there!) but with it being a company car and me being a recent university graduate in search of a job.........well needless to say I've had smarter ideas.

Glad to hear that Our Kerri has a home! I'm sad about Barnwell, I wonder why he didn't sell?

I am not sure what thread to reply to, but I am the person who bought Tap Silver Ghost yesterday.

He is a great horse and I am so glad I took a chance on him. He is so well bred!! By Silver Ghost (Mr. Prospector) out of a Pleasant Colony/Secretariat mare. His mother sold for $23,000 last year at Keeneland. What happened to this horse for the first three years of his life is a mystery, as he should have been a successful racehorse if you look at his breeding. But he never made it to the track.

He is lame, but the injury is hot and doesn't seem to be terribly serious. When he passed to me, he was wearing just one shoe, which I think is part of his problem -- his pastern angles aren't even at the moment. He is turned out now, and I am going to get the vet out to check and see what the problem is. He did sell for $250, and the owner said he would not sell for less than $500 right then, so I said yes right at the auction ring.

I am very upset that I didn't buy Doctor Hastings -- he went to a trader for $250 and I approached him afterwards as the owners were very upset with him going to the trader, and he said he would not sell him for less than $500, which I just didn't want to do. But he did say he would make him into a riding horse. I assume that is true, and it was irritating that the guy wanted twice the money when I wanted to buy him just 30 minutes later. But many horse traders are tough on that stuff.

My friend and I went back to Ralph Martinez's to see if we could buy Barnwell privately (he wanted just $700 for that very nice horse), and we were told that he had just sold to go back to the track in Kansas --both him and Beyers sold to the same person apparently.

Defintely the best horses went to a guy from Wisconsin, which is good as they will be retrained and go to another home. Elegante Senor was such a nice horse, I waited until the end of the sale to try to buy him, and he went for $1700 which was more than I could spend. I was hoping to take home two, and ended up with one, oh well!

The good thing was many people no-saled their horses rather than let them go for so little money.

The rumor beforehand among people I know was that all the horses at the sale were "junk" and I would say that was absolutely not true, there were many nice horses there. I think some of the traders told people that so they could get the good prices. But that's just my opinion.

Wish I could have saved more, but my pocketbook and my husband were both saying no =(

                                  Equestrielle,

Congratulations! I loved Tap Silver ghost, great breeding, big, attractive and a wonderful color. I came very close to flying to the sale on Saturday to buy him. I spoke to his owner on Friday and got some information which might be helpful. He was supposedly very slow and very fat (grass belly) which is why he never ran. He had an injury to his stifle, which they thought might have come from strain from training on a sandy track (although this was far from definitive). They had his stifle injected and he has supposedly looked sound on it in the pasture. He is supposedly quiet, no bucks and not a lot of spooking. The toughest thing about him seemed to be keeping him slim!

Good luck and please keep us posted. I had planned to give him awhile to grow up, and then to hopefully make him into a show horse.

                                  Let us know!

Equestrelle -- congratulations on buying Tap Silver Ghost! Sorry for posting wrong info *blush* I must have some of the horses confused - was second hand info that I remembered from my phone call with Keely (and I was on my cell driving home from teh barn!)

Tap Silver Ghost was one of the horses my trainer (Hillary) liked VERY much. She thought he was fancy and looked VERY athletic. (I know the ones Hillary liked b/c I wrote them down!)

I wonder which one Keely's boss bought then...getting all those gorgeous horses confused!

Am very happy for Pretext. She looks to be a very nice mare!
