Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I Like Ponies- You don't have to send a thing- thank you for even considering doing that. Everyone has been so generous, her surgery was covered in full!! She felt very good last night before I left for work, she started playing with my other 2 dogs, running around after them! So I had to put her in the kennel so she would not tear her many stitches. Now she is finally acting how a puppy should act. She figured out tennis balls are really neat and started rolling them across the floor and chasing after it. It was really cute to watch. It's sad that at her age she was not exposed to toys and things normal puppies are exposed to, at say 8 weeks old. I gave her a sterilized bone- amd she looked at it for 10 minutes wondering what to do- then figured it was a neat thing to chew on. I guess she grew up "on the streets" and learned to survive on her own. One of the officers this morning told me he was trying to catch a dog last night that was running on the streets with a piece of chain link fenced wrapped around its' body-he was not sure if it was just caught on him, or if it was stuck into him,- he tried for over an hour and could not get near it. So somewhere in Portsmouth a dog is running with someones fence attached to it. Sometimes I really hate my job because I see some terrible things and too many cruel individuals. I just hope I never see another "Kirby" running with a wound of that nature.-and what is sadder is Animal Control can't spend a lot of money on vet bills to save an animal. Most of their money goes to food, shelter and salaries. If I had my own farm I would probably have every stray animal!"Oak Hill"

Hunter_Rider, you are a saint for helping her out the way you have. It breaks my heart to think of what would have happened to her if you hadn't have found her and invested so much time and caring.
Everyone in our end sends much much love and many wagging tails (I have 2 pound pups and my mom has two rescues of extremely abused dogs that we have spent years bringing back to "life")
Does Kirby have a home yet? I assume many have stepped up with loving homes -- but please please let us know if you are still looking. I'm up here near DC and would be more than happy to help!

God Bless your kind soul.

Just saw this topic--Kirby looks like an angel! And I'm thinking there's some Beagle in that mix!
We had a dog at my old hospital who was brought in after he had been set on fire. He was a stray as well, and the nicest, sweetest dog you would ever want to meet. The Maryland SPCA sponsored him, and we did all the work at cost--which included 5 debridement and skin graft surgeries, daily bandage changes, and a four-month stay in the hospital. I bawled like a baby the day he left with his new owners, but he did come back for visits. He even sent us a Christmas basket!
Bless you for helping Kirby!

That latest picture shows how she is adapting to kindness. Her whole facial expression is just more relaxed and happy, even though she'd tired.
What a blessing you, HR, and your wonderful vet are! Once more, thanks for giving all of us the chance to share in this, it is SO satisfying!!
Someone's going to be very lucky to get this cute little girl for their very own. If I didn't have a full house already (5 dogs, 4 are rescues), I'd be on my way to get her myself!

HR - It so great what you've done for Kirby. She's had some tough times for sure, but now she's one lucky little girl.
About the Concord puppies, I didn't notice this posted, but this news made it to my paper all the way out in CA - sounds like the found a serial killer in the makings?
Police say teen linked to torture of poodle
A Weare teenager was arrested Saturday in connection with the kidnapping and torture of a poodle last weekend, an incident authorities believe is related to the mutilation of three puppies Thursday in Concord.
Stephen Hess, 17, was charged with falsifying physical evidence, which authorities found at his home. Hess could face more charges as the investigation continues, according to Weare police.
Police didn't specify what evidence was found. Hess is being held on $10,000 cash bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on the felony charge Tuesday in Merrimack District Court.
That was the article. NHers, keep us updated!

Hunter_Rider, I wonder if as time goes on and the stitches come out you will find that Kirby will be playing quite well with your Malinois. You may wind up with 3 dogs after all. I believe the ONLY reason you were really putting her up for adoption was that you thought your Malinois would be too rough for her. They KNOW she is a puppy and I bet they will all get along fine when she's off 'restrictions'.

Well, I am off the next 3 nights!!! I took Kirby to the barn today, first time she ever saw a horse!!! Scared her at first and then she was just fine. She does not like to urinate in WET grass!! She held her urine for 16 hours, until the dew dried, and then she finally urinated!!! I came home at 5am, she did not want to walk in the dew, again at 8am, still too much dew, then finally at 11:45am she urinated!!She walks in the dew as though she has weights on her feet- does not like it at all. So I need to get her used to that. So far, no accidents in the house, I have had her here since Thursday and not one accident. She really wants to play and that is hard for me, because I am so afraid she is going to tear out the sutures, so I have to place her back in her crate, and she cries for 10 minutes and goes to sleep. Friday the sutures come out and will get some better pics. I think she has some yellow lab and maybe a beagle mix. At my barn they breed beagles, and that may be the cross- or Heinz57. What-ever it is she is a sweetheart. I received an email today from COTH and they want me to call them, they would like to do a story on her.So I will get up with them tomorrow."Oak Hill"

Can't wait to see more pictures. Even though we are technically not supposed to post too many dog threads on this board, it's nice to come to a place where everyone "gets it". In my real life, not everyone does. Aren't we so lucky to have our dogs in our lives? They are just the greatest!
Cherish every day with them. Abby the lab will be 15 in Dec. I know I am on borrowed time with her. I also know she has been loved every day of her life. We have had a wonderful 15 years together.
For all the "Kirbys" out there, please spay and neuter your pets, and support your shelters and rescue leagues.
Here's to Kirby.
