Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Puppies found in trash bag with legs, tails cut off
    Friday August 29, 2003

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) Police are investigating an animal cruelty case in which three puppies were found in a trash bag at a park with some of their legs and tails cut off.

Police say a woman found the animals about 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Rollins Park in Concord.

The puppies, two females and one male, were between 7 and 10 days old and appeared to be black lab mix, police said.

The hind legs and tails were amputated from two of the puppies. A hind leg was cut off the third one, police said.

It was determined that the injuries may have been two to four days old and caused by an extremely sharp instrument, police said.

The puppies are at the Northwood Veterinary Hospital. Their condition was not immediately known Friday; there was no answer at the hospital.

Meanwhile, police in nearby Weare are looking for whomever tortured a poodle last weekend. The poodle, who will lose an eye, appeared to have been tied and dragged along the road. Police said it would be premature to say the two cases are connected.
The virtual "woodshed" seems the only remedy for willful fools .

Kirby did great last night while I was at work, she can definitely hold her urine. I let her out at 10:30 pm before I left, she urinated a little, came home at 4:30 am, she was wonderiong why I turned on the lights and woke her up! I took her outside for 10 minutes, and she stood there wondering why she was outside-so I took her back to her kennel and she went in took her meds and went back to sleep. I got home at 9:15, and she went out and finally urinated!! She ate a big breafast and is back napping while I get some sleep. She is adapting to affection, and she is starting to follow off leash in the back yard. She still is unsure of the E-collar and when she bumps into something it scares her. When you sit down, she comes running with her tail wagging-she has not put her tail between her legs since she has been here. I think she will adapt well to other animals-as long as they are not too overbearing. My older Mal is 85 pounds and is gentle-she handles that fine, but my younger Mal wants her to play and gets a little rough-she just goes to the back door to get away. He does not understand you cant play that hard with her, she is only 23 pounds! She should be around 35-40 so she does need weight. Her weight is not horrible but you can feel her ribs and backbone, no fat what-so-ever. She keeps her bed in the kennel very clean, no chewing and she stands like a statue when you clean her wound-I think she knows you are trying to help. Sorry to make this so long but I know everyone wants to know how she is doing. I have had tremendous amounts of emails, and on my night off I will answer everyone. I know she is very thankful of everyones generousity.(I know I am!)

I forgot to include her pic from this morning! In her knennel, unfortunately, only until the sutures come out- but her expression seems much livelier than yesterday when I brought her to the house!! I feel so bad, I feel like I put her in 'jail" when she goes in the kennel.

My friend was involved in the rescue of these pups, and my vet (at Northwood Vet Hospital) is caring for them. Sadly, the two pups who had both hind legs amputated had to be euthanized as there was nothing that could be done for them. As of this morning, "Cassidy", the remaining little boy who is a tripod, did make it through the night. He's being nursed around the clock by my vet and her husband, and is on antibiotics for a wound infection. This was a horrendous situation; what's equally frightening is thinking about what's become of any other littermates and the mother..... We're hoping that the publicity will result in someone coming forward who either witnessed the dropoff, or knows something about the despicable individual(s) responsible for this atrocity. The cop who took the report was horrified, and plans to pursue the investigation aggressively.

I really don't like people much these days....

I have had sooooo many inquiries, I have to keep her here and quiet until next Friday when the sutures come out. I have many people that have offered a wonderful home. I just have to figure out which setting will suit her the best-which I hate to do, I wish everyone could have her-she is an awesome puppy. The vet thinks she is 5-6 mo. old. They went a head and spayed her too, and she is on heartworm preventative, has had all her shots etc... bloodwork came back just fine-thank God she did not have heartworm. We have so much West Nile here, I am amazed\our mosquito population is terrible. No clue on breed, but her temperment is to die for- and so easy going, just learning to trust again. Someone really abused her. I droped a pan and she scurried to her kennel, as though I directed it to her....sooo sad. Something drew me to her, and I knew I had to catch her somehow. Thank God Animal Control worked with me and understood how important it was to get her in for treatment. They just could not swing the bill and had she not had surgery the vets thought gangreen (sp) might set in, the wound was at least 6" long by 3" wide and cut through 3/4 of the muscle, and was starting to granulate. She was a very lucky gal.

                  • Hunter_Rider- Such good news on Kirby!! She is positively adorable!! Please let us know when you have found her a home (or has her cute face wormed it's way into yours ).

Greyhndz- I'm with ya on the not liking people much these days, but then something happens, like Hunter_Rider's rescue of and all the support for Kirby and I have to admit that there is still some good in the world.

What happened to those pups makes me cry. It could so easily have been our new black lab mix puppy! He was found, along with his littermates, by my friend's rescue and they have all found loving homes. After reading that story I will be going home and hugging him and our other rescue until they turn blue!!

I just wanted to let everyone know I have talked with Trisha today from COTH and explained about the Kirby fund. She was very touched and also concerned about her. I also mentioned to her that I felt it would be appropriate to formally thank everyone who has been so supportive. She is working on the story and is going to get back with me. I can not personally thank everyone enough, and I think this would be a nice way to thank everyone. I will keep you abreast of what is going on!!

                            • I am getting in on this a little late, but I'm sure you're going to have extra costs (post-surgical care, meds, food, etc.) so I'm in the process of setting up a Paypal account and will send you $$. I do not want reimbursement!! If any of the "Kriby fund" is left over, you can donate it to your local shelter.

Also, I would be interested in giving Kirby a home. I will send you an e-mail.

I do not understand how someone could be so cruel!! They will get theirs eventually (let's hope it is sooner rather than later, and very VERY slow & painful...).

                              • My little Radar (half Corgi/half German Shepherd) was a 'trash bag' puppy. He and all his brothers and sisters were put in a trash bag that was tied tight and thrown in a trash barrell. Apparently someone heard them 'mewing' and ripped open the bag to see why the bag was squirming and where the noise was coming from. She immediately called the shelter and they came out and rescued the pups. Radar is an absolutely delightful (and spoiled rotten) 4 year old now, fits right in with all my other pound puppies and has a home for life. He looks like a German Shepherd until he stands up. He's got little, short Corgi legs and half a tail - half way between a shepherd tail and a Corgi tail. I, also, don't understand how anyone can do this. If you don't want 'em, take 'em to the pound or a shelter!

On the other hand, I think it's really nice that, on the heels of the thread suggesting another fundraising auction, that we were able to do this with a minimum of bother for anyone. It seems to have worked really well, accomplished the mission, and it certainly gave me a warm fuzzy feeling, small though my contribution was.

You guys are just great!! Kirby got her drainage tube out today and is doing well, actually a little spunky!! 6 more days and she gets the sutures out and E-collar off!! Which I know she will be thrilled. She has a great appetite and has picked up 3 pounds since Monday!! She sould definately use at least 10 more. The vet said she is sooo much better with people since he saw her on Wednesday- he said she was so scared of everyone, and he had to sedate her just to examine her. Today she wagged her tail the entire time he was removing the drain and licked him- he said she does have a very nice temperment for being so abused. It should heal well, not impair her movement, but there may be a scar, not noticeable with her hair, but you will be able to feel it when you rub her chest. She was cut from just under the throat down through her chest and under her front legs. It was a pretty long and nasty laceration- more along the lines of 7-8" He said it was definately a knife, not a razor blade. So basically he confirmed it was done intentionally. Had she gotten caught on something it would have been more jagged. I have dealt with him for the last 6 years, when Rambo could not walk he would drive to my house and examine him if I was having problems. He also thanked me for "taking her on" he said without the surgery she would have gotten a nasty infection and probably would not have survived, so thanks to you all you made this possible so I did not have to declare bankrupcy!! I just could not see this puppy suffer any longer, and I have to say Animal Control went way beyond their duty to try to catch her. They went out of their way spending an hour and a half to try to catch her. They usually don't spend that much time on a stray-they usually clear the call"unable to trap" and drive off. I have worked along side them for 7 years, so when I call them, and tell them we really need to catch this one, they usually go out of their way. They are a good bunch of people here in Portsmouth. Now we just pray no infection sets in. She loves riding in the truck- I have a crew cab, and when you put her in she really wags her tail, and tries to get in the front seat, which she did while driving, and sat in my lap looking out the front windshield. From what I have seen she is very bright and learns very quickly. She also likes a routine!! I will get pics when the e-collar and sutures come out so you can see the end result. Thanks again for everything, and I hope we can get COTH to do something special in one of their issues. Mary
