My trainer had several people showing at a local Arabian show that wasn't too far away. I decided to drop by and say, "Hi!" and watch a few classes.
My 2 year old loves the horses and will often help me feed, but he's not usually very interested in sitting on them... I don't have any tiny ones.
Today, when we were pulling into Fair Hill, I told him we were going to see our trainer and watch the horse show. He started excitedly giggling and pointing at the horses. Made my day!
Then he was so excited when we got out and went to the stalls. He kept showing me hay and buckets and wanted to pet all of the horses.
We walked down and watched some classes and he had a blast when the horses went in the ring and trotted (halter). He also was rather excited with one horse misbehaving and rearing (I may be in trouble).
After we were done watching classes we walked back to the barn. They were tacking up one of the ponies and I asked him if he wanted to sit on her. I expected to hear, the most popular 2 year old word in the universe-- "NO!"
Instead, he surprised me and happily sat on her for the longest time... he sat up nice and tall with a big 'ol smile on his face! Ironically, a few days ago I had a conversation with my trainer about the feasibility of leasing this very pony once kiddo was older if he was still interested- and the answer was yes! I actually had to tell kiddo that it was time to get off.
I make it routine that after he sits on a horse he pets it and tells it "thank you." He happily told the pony, "Thank you." It's so cute. I try to instill in him the importance of respecting animals and treating them well. He is the gentlest toddler with animals that I've ever met- a number one petter and he gives the cats "hugs" which is more like a snuggle.
I was just so happy that he had a great time. I enjoyed spending the time with friends and watching the show. My only regret is that I didn't take my stallion and show him- he should have cleaned up. When I was considering entering I just didn't know that I could deal with all of the stress of trying to show with a small child (and a stallion).
Kiddo really made my day sitting on the pony and being so happy! Usually, when I put him up on a horse, he's bareback... today he had a little kids crosby (which is so darn cute). So, maybe he likes having a saddle... maybe he likes a smaller pony... or maybe the planets just all aligned. I'd love if he'd take up riding and it could be something we could do together, but if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen... I will encourage, but not force.
But, he just made my day, today, and I knew some of you guys would understand!
