Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

An eating right breakfast bar. (I HAAAATTTTEEEE breakfast, but I force myself to eat *something*)
Chicken burrito for lunch, with Tyson SW chicken, cheese, lettuce and some taco sauce
      Some chips/salsa for a snack
Dinner was leftover lasagna and baby carrots..

      Go me. haha, right.
This is the first time I've lived on my own and had to cook/buy food for myself (I cook some of my meals at home as well, but Dad buys the food). But I figure almost anything is better than that dorm food I ate all last year. bleck.

For those of you who might want to track your *horse related* workouts + eating habits, www.livestrong.com has quite a few of the former, and every possible food you can imagine.

I was quite gratified to learn that "Cleaning barn, vigorous", burns over 500 calories an hour. Grooming burns something like 400 calories an hour. Raking around 250. Pretty neat, and free too

When I lived with my parents I tried to eat healthier, smaller meals throughout the day - a healthy breakfast, early lunch at school, something small when I got home from school and before the barn, and dinner. I also tried to abide by the nothing past 7-8pm rule.

Now I live on my own and this summer has been particularly hard because my boyfriend (who does most of the cooking, I'm a holy terror in the kitchen) has been gone for the past several months. I get up at 6 to let the 2 month old puppy get up and play for 30 min-an hour, bring in/feed the horses at 7, go to work at 7:30, have an hour lunch break to speed race home to let the puppy out again, speed race back to work until 6 which means I get home between 6:30 and 7 and let puppy out again while we clean stalls and feed and turnout which takes about an hour. Finally I get to shower and by that time it's 8:30 or 9:00 and I'm too beat to make a real meal, so I end up eating crap late.

I tend to eat things I can eat on the go, but I hate fast food as well, so usually it's low fat yogurt with some low fat granola and some strawberries and/or raspberries that I eat while driving with my knees on the way to work. Sometimes I don't have time to prepare that and it ends up being a nutrigrain bar which isn't bad in itself, but somedays I'm really bad and have poptarts instead. Lunch is something I can grab and go with as well, maybe ramen noodles if I have the 5 minutes to prep them, and then I eat them driving with my knees back to work. Or microwavable leftovers. Dinner I have more time but I'm usually lazy, sometimes I get the inspiration to cook in which case it's something simple from a box. Like Kraft or Hamburger Helper, neither of which are very good for me! I do snack at work sometimes, trying to keep it healthy, but more often than not it's a crackers or chips.

I start school again next week, don't know how I am going to fit that into the day too! Oh and did I mention actually trying to find time to ride...

ETA the bottom of my food pyramid is probably wine...

I never used to be a breakfast eater, but now I'm on a medication that has to be taken with food twice a day, so I absolutely have to have something solid for breakfast. That took some adjusting, I always used to hate eating in the morning before I rode, because even something light felt like it was sitting like a lump in my stomach. Back then I'd usually have something like a instant breakfast shake, or a slim fast, some kind of liquid breakfast. These days liquid breakfast + medication = regurgitation

I get hungry a lot during the day, so I've been trying to add more protein to my breakfasts to see if that helps. Often I'll have whole wheat toast with peanut butter. Actually, I eat peanut butter fairly often. I'll pack a PB&J to take with me to the barn if I'm going to be there most of the day, since it can sit in the car without going bad.

If I spend the day at the barn, and don't eat while I'm there, I inhale everything in sight when I get home

Interestingly, I did way better when I lived alone than I do now. DH is a incredibly picky eater, insists on meat at every meal, and I probably cater to his tastes more than I should. Thank goodness my son isn't anywhere close to as picky as his dad.

If I don't eat breakfast (and something with protein, too, even if it's just one strip of bacon or a cube of cheese) I am SO HUNGRY I get nauseus. However, I can go for hours in the middle of the day and then realize "Hey, it's six o'clock and I have a headache and my stomach hurts--oh yeah, breakfast, twelve hours ago, probably should eat again..." I can go hours without eating, but not if I don't eat something right after I wake up.

Generally when it's hot out I don't want to eat and have no appetite, so often in the summer I wont eat until evening when it's a bit cooler. I'm in school, and often forget to eat lol, so I do a double disservice to myself

Coffee is my beverage of choice, but I try to drink 1 bottle of water to each cup of coffee...then I'm less motivated to drink lots of coffee lol. Peppermint or green teas are also lovely Water comes in at the bottom, but I see it as a necessary evil lol. Beers are totally acceptable any time, no strings attached! And most definitely welcome after a hard lesson!

I do eat a lot of yogurt, cottage cheese, fish, chicken, salads of all kinds (hate dressing though so always plain) fruit and yogurt with granola, rye bread with caraway seed (fav for breakfast with cottage cheese!) Fruits and veggies of any kind-especially grilled zucchini and eggplant on salad MMMMM!!!! I also love sushi, and hate any sort of pork product, yes including bacon. I love eggs cooked in any way, especially hard boiled

I do cook everything from scratch and try to buy local, and seasonal foods as often as possible.

In the winter, I love stews, and anything I can cook in a crock pot. I like big sloppy messes of pastas and sauces, and my fave (I'm Hungarian) comfort foods include beef goulash and chicken paprikas. Not the best diet, but not the worst! I also go to the gym at least 5 days a week, 7 if I have time, and I ride 5 days a week

I pretty much eat whatever isn't nailed down. It's bad, but wtf-ever, you only live once.

With that in mind, I do try to buy healthy foods and eat a lot of salads, but quantity is a battle I can't win. For example, I just ate, um, I think six slices of bread and butter, a turkey sandwich, a whole cantaloupe, yeah that's gross...I don't normally have bread in the house because of the bread/butter thing, but DBF just left for a month and left half a loaf, and it might go bad...cough.

I'm trying (operative word) to lose weight, so mainly lean protein, green veg, fruit, stuff like that. Essentially a modified form of Protein Power diet--and I asked my doctor for the OK.

for me, it's 2-3 small cups of coffee in the AM along with a granola bar of sorts. Fiber Plus bar around 11:30, then depending on how long my work day will be, at 2ish some sort of sandwich (or hot dog if im feeling particularly "oooh, F it all i don't care!") or another granola bar if i wont be @ work much longer. Dinner is usually a lean cuisine.

I've been trying to venture into the cooking world, but am too embarassed to try my hand at foods made for human consumption quite yet. So much of my baking has been trying out dog treat recipes or horse treats.
Can't say the dogs have been complaining, or the horse. Boyfriend?? Maybe a tad

(of course one of our dogs counter-surfed some of the cupcakes meant for the people... she's starting to feel ENTITLED to the results of my baking! Uh oh!)

Mmm, tonight was a bunch of different smoked fish. Scallops, shrimp, mussels, trout and salmon. I have a thing for anything smoked and I adore seafood.
And went out for lunch today and ordered that for take home dinner for later when I was there.

I'm not a fan of breakfast either. I can't even smell food when I first get up in the morning. Blech, gross. But I'm also not a morning person.
First thing am is a cup of coffee and a murderous attitude.
After barn chores I can eat and then I have breakfast around 7:30-8 am or so. And even then I can't eat hot food.
However oddly enough I LOVE breakfast out. Sausage and eggs and all that good stuff. Mmmmmm. But I have to be out of bed at least 2 hours to eat breakfast out.

Same here! The mere thought of breakfast right after getting up--especially something like eggs and bacon--

I definitely have to be up for at LEAST an hour or so before eating breakfast, and then I like carbs. On this less-carbs diet, I'm having cottage cheese and RyVita crackers. Or yogurt with protein powder added.

I also like breakfast out after I've been up and about for a while.

I MUST HAVE COFFEE WHEN I WAKE UP. This is non-negotiable. I'm not a morning person and it's useless even to try to talk to me before I have coffee!

My trainer when I was a kid lived on Diet Pepsi and donuts... my current trainer seems to mostly eat Caffenine free diet Coke, Reeses Peanut butter cups and Starbucks Chai Tea Lattes.

I eat pretty much whatever I have in the house... often frozen diners.
