  • Helmet weight question

I recently ordered a Trauma Void Lynx helmet. I've tried it on but haven't actually used it yet because I'm concerned about the weight. I usually ride for 2 hours at a minimum and often ride for 4+ hours. It's heavier than other helmets I've worn and I'm concerned about neck strain and headaches.

I have it on my head right now (I put a liner in it in case I decide to return it) and am going to wear it around the house today while I'm working to see how it feels.

Any input from those who have one?

ETA: I just weighed the helmets:

    Trauma Void - 700 grams
    Troxel - 526 grams
    Ovation - 418 grams
    Tipperary - 544 grams

The Ovation is my main riding helmet.

I have the lynx and have been riding in it for a few months. I don't ride as long as you, but I haven't noticed any problems with increased head or neck pain. I did feel like it was sliding down over my forehead initially, even though it wasn't, because it just sits a bit lower on the head than my other helmets (Ovation and One-K).

Thanks for including the weights! For reference your head probably weighs 4.5-5 kg, so the addition of your Ovation is an increase of ~9% while the Lynx is an increase of ~15%.

My guess is that unless you are prone to headaches and neck strain, this difference is probably not an issue, but I like your idea of trying it around the house for a bit first.

I have one (not sure which model) and I have not had any problems with it. I have ridden two horses a day. I have significant neck issues (two cervical fusions) and I do neck exercises which may help ward off problems. Oh - I also go to an Alexander Technique practitioner. So - I like it, but my PT program may help prevent strain.

Makers no longer state weight, not that I can find.I needed a helmet in Wellington, went to tack shop, huge one. Tried on 20 helmets, last one fit and was perfect. Love it, an ovation, after trying on 1000$ helmets, the saleswoman was less than overjoyed. I put a beaded design on the back of pink breast cancer for my friend Erin. I need another one now, will order this model, I fell and my head thumped on the ground. That is the time for a new helmet, and toss this one.

I couldn't find helmet weights anywhere so I got out my gram scale and weighed them. I was surprised at how much more the Trauma Void weighed,

After wearing the TV Lynx around the house for a couple of hours I decided to go ahead and keep it. I had a tiny bit of a headache but I get that with any helmet I wear.
