Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

    Ooh, I want to play!

Now mare wouldn't have to fill all the roles I ask her to 'cause I can only afford one horse. I can get an 18h bay DWB gelding for dressage, a bay Holsteiner/TB cross mare for the AA/AO Hunters, an Icelandic pony for trail riding and on Sundays I'd bomb around the neighborhood on my 17 h chestnut 5-gaited Saddlebred! Current mare can be the jumper she's always dreamed of.

And my own farm to house them all, with lots of pasture.

      Oh this is fun!

First, I would build a retirement facility here in California and put my old gal there with friends. Think I'd take in some rescues too. Lots of pasture with decent grass/forage, nice big trees to take siestas under, ponds to cool off in.

To ride, my dream horse - a palomino-with chrome - Missouri Fox Trotter. Put him/her in a LQ trailer and compete at NATRC rides.

      That is all.

        THIS!!

Then I would buy, raise, train, and show this foal I found on the Grey Fox Farm website. his name is Rain Boots and his parents are AMAZING LOOKING. I wish I could figure out how to post the link.

I would buy a small farm, a friendly cat, a placid horse, a riding vacation, and really nice boots. Not all at once.

I would finish my small outdoor ring (footing, nice fence, drainage), fix the stall floors in the barn, put up a huge, dust-free indoor arena, and an equally huge outdoor arena. Buy the property next to us, build a 10 ft. high wall to hide the neighbors (haha..just kidding..kinda...), build another barn (stalls attached to indoor). Get the pastures in good working order and put a wide trail around the outside of the property that could be used for hacking or conditioning.

            Horses I would buy:
A big WB/TB (around 16.3 to fit my long legs) that is solid over fences, Can go 3'6", but is willing to wait around for me to get there!

A barrel horse, preferably gelding, about 15.3 to 16 hands, Frenchmans Guy bred, Palomino, FAST, good mind, doesn't have to be started on the barrel pattern, but nice and broke with a good amount of GO without being a crazy. Nothing I hate more than a super lazy horse who just will.not.work.

OH.. and if this is a majikal refilling bag of money, I'd buy property and build a beautiful facility in Wilsonville, OR. (I was practically drooling driving by Wild Turkey Farm and the show grounds at Hunter Creek)

              Sigh.....
Buy out the neighbors on all three sides for more pasture - oh heck, I guess make it FOUR sides and I'll turn the golf course back into the pasture it was 20 years ago....

build a nice BIG indoor arena, have hubby put in his hi-tech German footing, hire a housekeeper and a grounds keeper and a stall cleaner, and RIDE.

Oh, yeah, guess I'd better put in a new house too - may as well!

              I have PLENTY of horses.

THIS SUMMER? Two pools, one for me and one for the horses!

Next summer I'm hoping I'd have a different answer!

I'd pay off debt first, because I'm boring like that. No more mortgage or car loan would be nice.

Though building my own place with arenas and what have you sounds nice, I'm actually getting a great deal on board right now, so I'm not feeling much of a push to do it myself

For a horse related splurge, I think I'd actually consider having some serious diagnostic work done on my 15 year old mare. She's actually doing quite well, but she's a little cold backed, a little slow to warm up, that sort of thing. So far I've been managing her with a good saddle fitter, a little lunging before I ride, a long slow warm-up, glucosamine, good rub downs with linament, and poultices after I ride. There are plenty more things I could try, but since there really isn't a specific area that seems to be the culprit, I'm not to inclined to spend a fortune treating all her body parts with expensive procedures and products.

For clarification, this isn't a mare that's suffering, but I feel like she could be brought up from say 90% to 100% if I felt like dumping a bunch of money into her.

And I'd probably also splurge on a really nice saddle for her and me. Right now I'm using an old County that fits her like a glove, but is not doing me any favors

I also want a large indoor with great footing, skylights, regular lights, an audience seating area and sound system. I know, both bag and the denominations inside would have to be BIG, but there appears to be no limit.

I would NOT get more horses. Honestly, 20 is plenty.

I too would buy a large parcel of land in California (somewhere around Auburn in the Sierra Foothills). I would take in wonderful old retired horses. In addition to the retired horses, I would start a camp for young at-risk girls who love horses (or just want the opportunity to be around them) and have them give lots of love and attention to the retired horses.

Horses saved my life as a young girl, I would love the opportunity to not only give back to the horses, but give other young girls the opportunity for a better life as well.

depending on how much is in that sack

I would pay off my tractor, build a barn, buy the lot that prevents my place from being square to prevent someone from building on it, replace my furnace and flooring in my house. Then I'd give my horses trainer the choice of paying her expenses to take my horse to FL during the winter to do the hunters or give her the horse since they adore each other. Unfortunately, that's not likely to happen and I really kind of need the money so need to sell the horse. (even though she's my first homebred and I never intended to sell her)

Depends on the amount in the sack of money .

Buuuut, let's assume an extravagantly large amount, without being disgusting. And assume all debt has been taken care of :

Buy property that I was bitching about not being able to get in the Around The Farm section. Build an near-identical twin to my fancy house in town on said property, with some expansion but otherwise same. Will have to convince BF of this, but money talks convincingly. Build medium-sized but uber-nice barn with all the trimmings. Ditto extra-large indoor (see below). Convince BF that the buildings should be two separate buildings, see above. Fence property in Centaur, see above statement about BF and convincing and money. Convince BF that cows will be California-happy in Centaur.

Am I detecting a pattern?? Oh, wait, I know how to pacify him, add to list: Buy BF large rodeo-package horse trailer, several rodeo entries, clinics with Joe Beaver and never, ever, complain about above indoor having cow shit in it or that the calf chute takes up too much space (hence the extra-large part...room for calf chute AND jumps )

I'd take my hubby, horses, dogs, cats and chickens and move to Texas and buy myself a big ranch in the middle of nowhere.

Buy the 220 acres behind me and plant it in long leaf pine.

Buy the 180 down the road and convert it to a needy children's day and overnight camp and horse rehab. City kids and such need grass and turnout as much as horses ever did.

Buy all the road frontage across from me and tote off the house trailers, racecars, and dogs. Clear as pasture, all 100+ some odd acres of it.

                                  Pave my driveway.

That'll do. I'm good on horses. OK maybe ONE kickass dressage horse.
