Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I think my most bizarre equestrian fashion moment was when I once stopped at a gas station on my way to a show...wearing white full seat breeches, a white show shirt, and sneakers with Zocks...a very fashionably dressed woman complimented my outfit. I was like 16 and my response was pretty much a blank stare...it was like 5 AM. I'm still not sure what she was thinking.

The funny thing, though, is I hear all about this and I have gotten compliments on my outfits by non-horsepeople, but the only people I've ever seen in real life wearing any sort of equestrian apparel are obviously horse people--the hay in the hair and slobber stains are a dead giveaway!

Although I do admit I have a pair of Ariat fashion tall boots. They are actual Ariats and super comfy, but are designed like hunt boots with colors if I said that right...they're a bit shorter than I'd want in a riding boot and loose enough to wear over skinny jeans but still look okay on a bare leg, but have the brown tops. I know those are for the boys and ladies traditionally get patent leather tops when they get their colors and also I don't hunt seriously, but I love that look with the brown tops so I get my fix by wearing my Ariat fashion boots. I could actually ride in them as the sole and heel are acceptable, but they're much finer leather than Ariat riding boots so I doubt they'd hold up. Also I think that would be tacky. The nice thing is though that they are super comfy so on the rare occasion I need to wear nice boots all day I can wear those and not be unable to walk at the end of it.

I wear my tall boot socks all the time under jeans when I am wearing heels. I get sometimes funny looks but most people really like it. Now when I have to get dressed up I do wear boring nylons but I love my tall boot socks under jeans! :-)

Oh, and about those Gucci boots... Do you wear them with this or this?
I think you can take the pointy part of the spur off, so you don't have it, and they come in different sizes. The whole point, I think, is that you can just change out the pointy part with minimal effort.

About the helmets- WTF? Are those actually being marketed?

            They have a crop too!

Plus Ski's, Snow Boards, and much much more! I would be scared to see the price for those though!

I don't think you can wear them with either. I mean really! Pairing your Gucci boots with your Chanel helmet tisk tisk what would GM say?

WOW to the helmets... I can barely believe it. The question is... are they ASTM approved? I could so easily see someone showing in a Chanel helmet...

But seriously, who decided HELMETS were fashionable? Are you supposed to wear them around when you're just... walking? Can you imagine wearing one to work in an office?!

RE the Gucci boots/half chaps, they're pretty cute! I like the detail at the top of the half chaps (minus the buckles on the inside of the leg... obviously can't have that to ride in). Maybe Ariat or someone will take a leaf out of the Gucci book and add fun detail to half chaps

....and then you have to match all that with Hermes polo wraps!!

                    Oh.My.God.

Gucci boots (though I don't think they're REALLY meant for riding.) Chanel crops and helmets... and it doesn't even say if the helmets are approved.

My horse can't tell what kind of crop I whack him with, or what helmet I'm wearing. Or what boots I have on, for that matter.

P.T. Barnum was right. Or maybe just it's the born tightwad in me coming out!

At one time Gucci made saddles. Someone had one advertised on eBay... for a lot of money.

I'd wear them. If they didn't cost $1,345. Says she who just purchased boots from Marks and Spencer (kind of like JC Penney...it's the closest American equivalent I can think of) haha.

On the note of equestrian fashion, I saw someone in johdpurs (or look alikes?) outside the uni library last week. I couldn't decide whether they were about to go riding or were being fashionable. There are a lot of fashionistas on this section of campus, I think because it's actually in the city centre and it's all humanities subjects - on the science campus everyone wears t shirts and hoodies. Loads of girls here wear Dubarrys or Dubarry knock offs. Again, I have to say I'd own some if I could justify spending that much money on boots.

Those don't look like they'd be all that comfortable for the horse...
Why bother with Hermes polo wraps when you can get the T-Sport polos for less?
$88 is still way too much to spend, but at least they have a unique sort of technology to back it up. Hermes "equestrian collection" [and other designers getting into the equestrian spirit] is just bragging rights, and a really terrible way to spend your money.
And WHY, in god's name, would anyone spend $285 on a freakin' brush?!

I figured it was only a matter of time before half chaps came into fashion... I was walking to the bus stop a few years ago heading to my lesson, and wearing paddock boots/half chaps--and a girl (this is in the city of Buffalo) on the street exclaimed, "I love your boots!"

I get complimented all the time on my Middleburg winter boots too... I wear those constantly in the winter with jeans.

                            I did wear my Vogels once with a long skirt to work, but they weren't very comfortable to walk in, unless I kept my heels down. d;

I really actually like the stripe detail on the Gucci chaps though!

I personally don't like the boots, but Gucci has some gorgeous looking handbags with full cheek, eggbut, etc., bit motifs....Have watched a few on eBay, but will probably never buy one, they go for too much $$$. The leather quality is CRAP for the money they are asking. The leather is poorly dyed, and tends to show wear a lot sooner then "cheaper" bags like Coach and Dooney and Bourke.

That's so funny because all of my labs at school require that you wear close toed shoes in the laboratory so I started wearing my old beat up ariat paddock boots to lab a lot because I don't really own a lot of shoes honestly and I usually had to go to the barn right after anyway. People started asking me where I got them & once one of my professors started talking about horses and I mentioned that I rode horses and pointed at my boots. He seemed surprised & said, "Oh, I thought those were just a fashion statement."
                                    Really? lol.
They were falling apart at the toes and lots of other places, I was on the verge of duct taping them but then I just got new boots lol.
though I suppose you might be able to find a pair of equivalently beat up boots at urban outfitters lol.
