Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

when i was about 14, i gave kenny rogers directions to a pharmacy. i talked to him for about five minutes. he walked out of the store and i turned to my manager and said, "that guy looked just like kenny rogers." my boss made fun of me for months.

i went on a trail ride with john something or other--the blonde guy from dukes of hazzard. remember him? he was an ass. he kept a scrap book of photos of himself in his car.

i talked to ann rule (true crime author) on the telephone about the possibility of working for her (didn't happen but she was nice).

sat next to kurt cobane and the rest of nirvana on a flight from new orleans to seattle. i even held courtney bean while the nanny went to the bathroom. they were all drunk as skunks.

living in seattle, one sees low rent celebrities with alarming regularity. quit stalking me!

When we were in Disneyland about 8 years ago, a lady kept pestering my husband for an autograph saying "You're that MOVIE STAR!" She finally went away and we never did figure out who she meant! Ohterwise, nope, can't think of anything, except Prince Edward and Queen Elizabeth drove by our house many moons ago and I was lost in the Parliament buildings when I was 8 and the Minister of Finance brought me back to my parents. Little too eager jumping into the elevator and the doors closed...eek

The only BNP that I've ever met was in gr. 8 when the senoir students went on a school trip to Ottawa as part of choir and we sang at the parliment buildings. Jean Cretien (Canada's prime minister for those who have no idea who I'm talking about) came out and listened to us sing. Afterwards we all swarmed him lol - it's not everyday that you meet the leader of your country. He was really nice, the body guards looked a little antsy, but Mr. Cretien told them it was ok and put up with our questions and shook our hands.

Other than that I haven't met any other BNP (other than BNRs), unless I don't know it.

I have a horse related one that happened to my Aunt years ago. She lives in Colorado and she was rather excited to learn that Willie Nelson had moved in a few "doors" (several properties) down. He kept horses at this property and apparently one was a very loud colored Appaloosa. They got loose one day and wandered over to her place. She recognized them as "his" horses, got herself all fixed up and led the horses back over to his property. She rang the buzzer at the gate and was told that Mr. Nelson would be right down to make sure they were his horses and collect them. ...She was met by his assistant several minutes later...and she will never recover from the disappointment of "almost" meeting him (but hey, she did meet his horses)!!!!

Just a few weeks ago, I saw the new Broadway show "The Boy from Oz." (Hugh Jackman, mmmm!!!)

As we were leaving, I literally bumped into Robert Wagner and (his wife?) Jill St. John. They were on their way backstage to see their son, who did either the sets or costumes for the show. Both were very nicely turned out, not exactly young, but very elegant and attractive. I guess if you're really good-looking to begin with, it's easier to age gracefully!

Horse-related- I saw Bruuuce at the horse show in Wellington last winter.

Ohhh wow, I sure do! My work involves me with Harness celebs, and I think I've lost count of how many I've met. A few of my favorites have been Wally Hennessy (Moni Maker's driver...we chatted about how mares kick butt! ), Dorothy Haughton (Billy "The Master"s widow...sooo sweet and she never misses a thing), John Cashman (of Castleton fame...he is such a nice guy, and always greets me like an old friend even if he hasn't seen me for a year or so), Elbridge Gerry Jr. (he got stuck behind the sliding stall door at the Hall of Fame this year, and I managed to free him! ), and the late, great Norman Woolworth, who always had a funny smile on his face, like he knew a secret nobody else did. Shortly before his passing I got to meet his son and grandkids, too, and they are equally as charming. Having recently completed a 1,000-piece photo study of the Harrmians (E. Roland and Gladys, mainly), I practically feel like I've met them, too.

Most of you English riding folks probably have no clue who these people are, but to make it simple they are the George Morris's, the Robert Dovers, and the David O'Connors of harness racing. To me, a horseman is a horseman...and I'm always honored to meet the great ones.

When I managed a local tack shop I was in contact with a supplier in LA. Went there for a visit (non-horse related) and went to visit my supplier. He was gracious enough to take me on a tour of the facilities and that night there was a celebrity Polo Game. Got to meet, the folks from Heart to Heart, Silvester Stallone and several others. Was really cool. All were very cordial.

And due to my fathers job, I get to meet lots of folks, went up to a big country star (thought he was Billy Dean) and asked Mr Dean for his autograph, come to find out he was Clint Black, talk about wanting the mud to swallow me that day. Also have met several big name country singers who either had to be carried on stage due to a bit too much indulgence, met one who pads his jeans so that he looks like he has a butt, another who refuses to take off his hat becuase he is bald, one person could barely remember his name, one woman who was such a pig and so rude that even if I did like her music I would refuse to buy her albums, lots of down to earth country stars who just wanted to sit back and relax and take in the atmosphere of Rocky Gap. I met Dolly Parton and found her to be one of the loveliest women on this earth. Billy Ray Cirus sat on my Dad's motorcycle and the women in the area wanted to sniff the seat (no lie!!!). One star was interviewed in my friends Winnebago, but before we could let him in we had to hide all the liquor & any glasses. 2 very current popular guys went fishing on the pontoon boat with my Dad. He fell in and they dove in to "rescue" him! Great fun!!! I could write a book about some of the secrets I know. I even dated a person who was engaged & living with a country (not at the time we were together) star. She was so insanely jealous that one night she drove by his place and beeped the horn & screamed his name till he got up and went down to talk with her.
In my wilder days I met Adam Ant & his band, Terri Nunn & her band, Golden Earing and gosh so many that I can't remember. They were some fun times! Now I am an old married woman with a small son and happy that I did all that I did so I can enjoy my sedate life!

While I have not met John Schneider, I did arrange for someone else to meet him and at least once in his lifetime he did a very good deed. Years ago when I worked at a large radio station in Atlanta, I got a call from a lady explaining that her grandson was dying of cancer and as a last wish he wanted to meet John Schneider and Ben Jones (Cooter)from the Dukes of Hazzard. The meeting also had to take place the following weekend. To make a long story short both of those guys went to meet him. Ben even took him for a ride in the car they used on the show and put a little license plate with his name on it in his office on the show. John was out of town at the time and his agent did not believe he could make it back for the weekend but somehow he managed to do so and make a little boy's dream come true. That's pretty nice isn't it?

I was at a leasing convention in Atlanta a couple years ago, and into our hotel lobby walked this posse of rock-star & roadie looking group of people. I remember thinking, they've got to be a band, with their leather jackets and snakeskin boots. They looked rather "up" in age also. Then they started talking and had thick German accents, then it dawned on me. It was the Scorpions! Geesh, 15 years ago they couldn't have just walked into a hotel lobby without a mob scene! Too bad, I was really a fan back in the 80's/90's. But what do you say to them now? "I USED to be a big fan when hair bands were the big thing!!"??

I have to join in, I've met a few famous people.
When I was a lot younger, I went to a one day event in Wiltshire, England and met Rodney Powell (he was very cute), Mark Todd, David and Lucinda Green, got all their autographs. All very nice.
I'm also in the "Met Paul Newman" club. I met him at Lime Rock Park (a motor racing track in beautiful NW Connecticut). My husband worked there for a while (in a store that sells racing safety equipment)and Paul was there practicing for an upcoming race. I saw him arrive and spent most of the day watching him from the store window trying to pluck up the courage to talk to him. Eventually I did, twice. First I asked for his autograph ( and I was amazed how small he was) and the second time I got a photo taken with him. He was so gracious.
Also at Lime Rock, we met Anthony Robbins (the self help guru, he's exceedingly tall!!)
This year I've met a number of authors at book signings. Jodi Picoult, Harlan Coben and the wonderful Bill Bryson all this summer, all were great people. Just last week I (finally, after talking on the phone and exchanging emails) met Jody Jaffe and her husband, again, great people.
I saw Robert Duvall at Upperville this year but didn't talk to him.
Tootsie, of all the people in this thread I'm most jealous of you, Harrison Ford is my idol!!!

I was teaching in the main arena of a large equestrian center when this man who looked vaguely familiar came out on a horse in western tack and started racing around. He couldn't ride for squat - knees gripping, toes pointed straight down, hunched over the horn with a death grip with one hand and the reins in the other. I was teaching a dressage lesson on lengthening to a student on a recalcitrant Lippizaner gelding. I kept yelling "MOVE HIM! TURN YOUR TOES OUT AND GIG HIS LAZY ASS!". I suddenly heard a voice behind me saying "Would you quit yelling at him?". It was the man on the western horse - Clint Black. I said "Well, he pays me to yell at him. Wouldn't you like a job like that?". He thought for a minute and said "Yeah, I would. Seems people are always yelling at me!". We both laughed and he rode off.

I do see Bruce Springsteen down her occasionally, and Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall are in evidence during the polo tournaments, as is William Devane. I haven't had the nerve to approach Tommy Lee, though; I hear he's pretty crabby to anyone who bugs him about autographs and such. His daughter plays in the junior polo league down here. Poor child looks like her father.

Well, I live right down the street from ESPN headquarters...so I'm living a jock's dream, LOL! I've met and run into tons of well known athletes from all sorts of sports. Not big into any sport other than football, haven't really cared about most. I've unfortunately gotten to know a few past football great's who turned out to be big idiots. Kind of disappointing. Won't mention which one's were jerks. (one I never liked as a player, but he hates me right back now, LOL) But have met some of my growing up faves who were sweethearts...Zonka, Butkis, Tarkenton to name a few. Dick Butkis is amazingly sweet and has a fabulous twisted sense of humor...especially about re-enacting old SNL skits. You know...Da Bearsss! Hubby is not a big sports fan, he can take them or leave them, and I'm getting kind of bored meeting them. The corner store near my house always has athletes in it, and new people to my neighborhood get all gaga-eyed over some of these people. Those of us who've been here a while are more like "Hey Chris Burman...hurry up! I'm running late!" And the execs hate me as I razz them about not airing REAL sports...Equine Sports!
Other than that, the only famous people I've met and became excited about were mostly BNR's and BNT's. But for them...I ususally make a complete donkey of myself. I actually became so excited about meeting Margie (years ago) one time I accidentally blurted out "Hi MistyBlue, I'm Margie...nice to meet you!" Ugh!

Ran into William Shatner a couple of years ago at the World Championship show in Louisville (saddlebreds), in the mid 70's I lived in Dallas and Roger Staubach (QB for the Cowboys) went to our church and his daughters went to the same school I did - St Paul the Apostle church and school.

8th grade I met Sidney Poitier, his great nephew was in my class and his "uncle Sidney" was visiting the Miami area and dropped in one day.

9th grade I went to school at St Brendan in Miami, next door was Columbus High (all boy Catholic school, awesome football team) I met Don Shula and Nick Bouniconti (Miami Dolphins fame) because they had sons on the varsity team that year. Mike Shula was the QB - what a hottie! And he ended up playing for Alabama in college, was nominated for the Heisman, drafted by the Buccaneers, coached for the Bucs and I forget where he is now.

Whoever said they live down the street from Ed Harris.....oh you are so lucky, I have been gaga for him since I saw the movie The Abyss....I can't wait to see his new movie, Radio, with Cuba Gooding Jr.

Ohh, I forgot, my boyfriend and I ran into Jimmy Smitts back in December 1996. My BF was living in the Los Angeles area and I was visiting him. He took me to Century City one evening for dinner and shopping. I hear someone shout, "Hey Jeff" and my BF and I turn around to see Jimmy come over. Jeff and Jimmy chatted a while and I was introduced to him. Turns out Jeff and Jimmy know each other from flying on planes, they know each other from frequent commuting. Jeff also used to fly with Suzanne Summers quite often.

I fly coach so I never get to meet anyone famous

When I was living in Georgia several years ago, my SO took me to a Quail Unlimited sponsored Celebrity shoot. He was there to throw "stickbirds"; hand-thrown skeet. Took me along to do some demo shooting and gawp at the celebrities. I saw Tennesee Ernie Ford, Bruce Boxleitner (tall and gorgeous in person) and several others. Bruce actually stood behind me and watched me shoot; damn near shot my toe off when I turned around to get more shells and saw him there.
I had probably shot about 20 shells when I heard this very familiar male voice next to me, saying "Young lady, you're a good shot". I turned to look and it was Ben Johnson, the late great cowboy actor. I stammered out a thank-you and shook his hand. He told me to go back to shooting, that he wanted to see more. I complied.

ESG - too odd you would mention Ben Johnson. He used to have a charity cutting event and I was his driver one year - he liked my driving so well he kept me as his driver for the whole weekend. I also got to drive Bruce Boxleitner and the guy that played the retired astronaut on Northern Exposure - I think his name is Barry something or other. So basically all they got to see was the back of my head....not very glamorous I know.

Ran into Rod Stewart in a bar in New Orleans as well as the entire cast of Eight is Enough and most of Happy Days - some charity event. Saw Dennis Quaid in New Orleans also.

Glen Campbell was King of one of the parades there - I was really young and the only thing I remember is that he was so drunk he was throwing up in the goblet that he was carrying.

and I can even make it horse related!!!

I used to work at an arabian breeding/training barn in Louisiana. It was a very large place right in the middle of town with lots of acreage, guest houses, etc. Paul Newman stayed on the farm while he was filming the movie "Blaze" there in town. We were told not to bother them while they were there, but he came up to the barn to visit occasionally---he was very very nice. One day my Mom came out there to take me to lunch and when we were leaving, Paul was coming the opposite way up the drive (it was only wide enough for one way traffic) and he pulled off to let us pass. Let's just say my mother almost fainted!!! "OMG did you see who that was??? that was HIM!!!" I was like "yeah Mom, I see him all the time--it's no big deal"

But the highlight of it all....a few days later was my 16th birthday party--at the barn and YOU GUESSED IT....Paul Newman came to my party!!! Yep that was one for the record books

William Shatner also visited while I was working there too, but he wasn't very nice to anyone that worked there so meeting him was NOT a highlight of my life

                                        • I forgot about my close encounter with William Shatner. When the National horse show was at the Meadowlands, we caught the hotel shuttle over with him one evening. From his attire, I assumed he was showing a Saddlebred.

Either he had never heard the etiquette rule "ladies first," or he didn't think we qualified as ladies.
