Board Rules

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

  • Secret Santa - Yay or Neigh?

As I've been the COTH Secret Santa Chief Elf for 10 years, I have seen participating trending steadily downward. So before I dive into it again, I want to see if it's truly desired or if it's time to say Farewell.

That is so sad to hear! I look forward to SS every year. One thing I have enjoyed more than the gifts is the subsequent correspondences I get from my SS/elves, who I have gotten to know when I otherwise would have never had the opportunity to do so. It's a shame to hear it has not been as popular the last few years - I do think last year was strange in terms of participation.. but in any event, really treasure how much effort you have put into it. Thank you ChocoMare!

I agree with beowulf. I know you work hard, and it's probably a pita, but I, for one, do appreciate it! I'll join up this year again if you decide to continue. And yes, thanks!!!

I'm fairly new to COTH and don't know about Secret Santa. Hoping someone in the know can tell me how it works or where I can find information about it.

          Hi --

Every year ChocoMare organizes a COTH-wide Secret Santa; it is opt-in -- she usually opens up the thread in late September or early October, with a sign-up roster where you email her your name, budget, address information, and a little bit about you for your Secret Santa to know what to shop for. The sign-ups stay open for a few weeks, then she pairs you with people that are within the same price range, and you are free to shop!

It's fairly standard as far as Secret Santas go, just with a nice COTH twist

Last year was just strange all around for me. I have a little extra money and am in this year!

I know it's a lot of work for you so if you ever need a helper I'd be happy to.

I've never had the money to participate so no idea about previous popularity, but in general as long as people are getting their gifts, I would think it would be nice to keep it going.

ChocoMare thanks again for always doing the work to do this. I've only done SS once - and it was a total blast! Its my one chance to buy and get horsey stuff, so I am 100% on board this year.

ChocoMare I'm back in this year, too! Would it be easier for you, Chocomare, if we had to choose $ ranges instead of $10 increments? For example, 10-25, 25-50, 50-75, 75-100, 100-150, etc.? Just a thought, if it would be easier for you.

Well, with a vote of 22 Yay to 5 Neigh, the motion passes and SS returns for another year.

                              I'll post it all Monday!
