Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Yes, thank you Mod 1, for clearing that up.

I had a feeling it wasn't personal, although some people want to slant it that way.

Not everyone is ecstatic about 300 new threads a week screaming, "SAVE THE HORSIES OR YOU'RE A HORSE HATER!"
Homeopathy claims water can cure you since it once held medicine. That's like saying you can get sustenance from an empty plate because it once held food.

thats not the way it was AT ALL. i made one post a week in h/j for the ac4h broker listings and just recently made 2 in one week, one in HJ for ac4h and one in Off course for the camelot because someone PM'd me and asked me to please list the camelot horses in off course....so i did so.

I posted the ac4h TB's on racing in hopes someone over there might know of them. there was no SAVE THE HORSES or THEYRE GOING TO AL DIE emotional status to my threads at all. i listed the deadlines the horse's had and that was it.

im currently workign with someone via PM about a new forum. i will keep everyone posted.

Especially when it's not the actual organizations posting links.

Plus we all know where to find AC4H and Camelot as it is.

Whatever the reason, I am disappointed in this development. keep up the good work, farmgirl.

Mods, why shouldn't we / can't we have a forum that is like giveaways -- moderated posts just about the various worthy feedlot activities that many folks are interested in helping out with as they are able? Then the folks who have their panties in a wad can just stay away, and the rest of us can participate. ?????????

Another supporter for the Mod's decision. It's nothing personal against the OP. The H/J forum just isn't the place for 800 posts a week for rescue threads. Maybe they will make a forum for rescues in the future. That would be nice.

It's called "Alex Brown Racing" (if you can get past the eye-gougingly bad board software they use. Please, someone, donate ABR some money for a good board program.)

maybe people dont want to join ABR...i hate using ABR would love to see a rescue part of this forumn for people to share in and be a part of....and not bother those who dont care to read them. there is not 800 threads a week on HJ. there is ONE thread and ONE thread only. i started posting it over there because several of the HJ folks had taken the welsh ponies and the TB's and warmbloods as prospects.

and danceronice...please tred lightly. im not trying to bash on the mods or whine about not being able to post these horses. I'm informing those on this board of the situation and pointing them in the right direction of the links to the horses and the days they are posted. some people may know where to find the horses, and some may just click on the link to them every week with no clue how to go about finding them on their own. either way, im sharing the links and the information and moving along. take a DEEP breath.

I have suggested the same and gotten a positive response from the Mods...if you carefully read their reply it is <paraphrased>
"we are working on a way to allow this, w/o it being obnoxious to the whole board, please forebear for now"

as for horses dying in the interim,I have sad news for folks...it is my understanding that things will be worse this winter than now, with spikes in hay and grain crops and fuel and some usda reports that 2(or 3 was it ?) million more people will go on food stamps in the next 2 years...there will be lots more horses just like these...

as a general warning, see to your own herds first.

Yes, they are emotional. And it's obnoxious. Heck, didn't we just see you post the name of a small child, insinuate that a reputable barn sent a horse to slaughter, and posted about the apparent GRAVE danger of an unsound horse who wasn't, in fact, in danger at all?

I would love to see a section of the board for representatives of reputable rescues to post horses in need, but the drama needs to stop. I have absolutely no problem with reputable people posting horses in need on here, or helping 501c3 charities, but I really worry that the manner in which you're going about things actually does more harm than good.

And you weren't about to be banned, that's abundently clear.

I think a separate forum for broker/rescue horses would be a step in the right direction, and Mod 1 already stated they were looking into something like that since the classifieds are being revamped.

Off Course is for general discussions, not for people frothing at the mouth about 'saving the pwetty horsies', and then having a snit fit when people don't continually throw money at them.

The 'I'm better than you because I CARE' crap is getting old. We all care, but not everyone has extra money to throw at every horse in need.

Bumping up threads and posting things like, "We only have 2 days, folks! C'mon, let's step it up!" don't help, and in fact alienate a lot of people.

So yes, I think a forum for these types of threads is an excellent idea. That way, all the bleeding hearts can cry, wring their hands, and talk smack about everyone else where the rest of the group doesn't have to see it.

I can think of at least two more recent threads beyond a welsh pony on H/J. Both cases in which you didn't have all the facts and didn't bother to do any simple fact checking. In one of the cases you implied that a very reputable barn had sent a pony to auction. In the other, you posted inaccurate information about a horse that wasn't even in trouble.

ETA: And my charitable will never, ever go to an organization that goes to auctions without a plan (ie: We have the money ON HAND to purchase and care for x number of horses with the potential for $y in medical problems.) I will never give my money to an organization that has to send screaming emotional pleas from an auction because they can't afford the horses. At a certain point, that's not rescue -- that's hoarding. I'm certainly not going to give money to some random internet stranger who may or may not have a legitimate rescue for a horse that may or may not be at an auction and may or may not be getting purchased (shades of CBER, anyone?). Maybe this make me cold and heartless, but I like to know, as much as possible, that my money is being spent for the purpose I gave it. If I give to a reputable 501(c)3, I am reasonably certain of that.

I love horses but I am not in a position to Save the Horses at the slaughter pens. Face it, not all horses can be saved. Every time we have a recession this happens. I got my Arabian during the recession in the Early 1980's. He was a victim of a farm going bankrupt.
I am all for saving as many as can be saved but I also do not like being bombarded with the idea that because I do not buy one of these horses I am also a horse hater.
We are all suffering from this recession. It is too bad these horses are the victims of the recession. But we have the same thing happening with cats and dogs. Their owners can't afford to support them. They are trying to support themselves.
This is the way life is.
                            We can't save them all.
I am glad so many have been bought and given homes.
I tried to reason with a very emotional young woman over the slaughter horses. I got sworn at and called names because I "advocated " slaughter.
I did not, but that was beside the point.
Some get overly emotional about the subject.
All we can do is what we can do.
It is better than having them starve to death slowly and suffering. I still see farms with many head of broodmares with foals.
Are there going to be homes for those babies?
The racing industry is still turning out thousands of foals that will not make it to the race track.
I do not know the answer, it is not something that can be easily solved.

Alibhai's Alibar, a professional photographer who posts on these boards, often goes to Camelot and takes photos to promote the horses. She posts them on the Stable Minds BB. No "OMG OMG OMG" type rhetoric. She's just trying to connect people to horses that could use a home.

I don't think she makes it to Camelot every week because she travels a lot, but you could PM her to find out when she might be there next. If you're looking for a particular type of horse, I'm sure she'd help you if she can.

I agree these shouldnt be EMOTIONAL posts and honestly did not read much of what was on the OP's posts other than I would check the sites and see what was available as when I can I will try and take a horse in. I do think that a NON EMOTIONAL approach for these sorts of feedlots/rescues etc has it's place however. It is nice when people can step up and take in a horse that often has a lot to offer. However, we should all be aware that they won't all find good homes. These things DON"T need to be the pace to hash out if we are or are not for slaughter etc, that jsut causes problems and has NOTHING TO DO with helping the horses to find good homes. We all have our opinions regarding slaughter and they should be left at the door on these types of posts!

arabhorse..im sorry that you feelthat posting a link to horses in need and stating their deadline resembles someone with a bleeding heart crying and wringing their hands. I'm one of those folks that knows that horse slaughter is going to occur no matter what. I have stood there and petted horses waiting for the trucks to come and get them. no i didnt stand there and cry or go running around screaming about it...because there was nothing i could personally do for them. i can stand there, grit my teeth, with a lump in my heart, and understand that nothing i can say or do will prevent it from happening.

But what i can do, is attempt to help those horses who have the chance by posting the link to them. i'll admit i have gotten emotional in the past over some horses, some weeks of horses, but im usually pretty composed.

Here is my simple adult solution...if only it would work....if you dont enjoy the threads about kill pen horses...be an adult with control over your will-power...and DONT CLICK ON THEM...what a novel idea!!

I'm annoyed by threads posted all the time....you dont see me whining because im "annoyed" over something someone wanted to post.

everyone has their own opinion on these horses, and thats fine. whether your pro slaughter or against it, thats fine too. no one can change the slaughter situation but we can at least try to help a few poor souls and that was my goal...to get them noticed.

Like i said before i'm saddened by the decision but there is always a better solution in the future.

See all the examples below for why I am not the one getting warnings here. You HAVE been hysterical, judgemental, and quite possibly libelous in a couple cases. Repeating "I know you are but what am I?" doesn't change that.

It would be nice if CANTER, FLTAP, AC4H and all the other legitimate rescues (ie those who can provide business plans and annual statements demonstrating they are, in fact, not fly-by-night groups or outright criminals a la CBER) could have a section here to post things like the FLTAP listings threads and the weekly broker updates from AC4H. It would NOT be nice for it to turn into hysterics and dubious "outings" of previous owners who may or may not have anything to do with the horse being where it is. And it sounds like that is what the Mods are working on.

I bet you got the edited versions. It's been obnoxious and gotten much worse.

I'm sorry, Coth has always allowed threads on supporting rescue/rehab groups. Lately it's been a constant "heads up" about privately owned animals legally being sold at auction along with a good bit of hysteria that was just plain supposition.

and i ve never named called anyone to dump a horse at an auction without solid proof of paperwork in my hand.i have listed the names of owners/riders/farms the horse had PREVIOUSLY been at in hopes of someone around the horse's previous area might know it via a google search. someone took it the wrong way and blew it entirely out of the water...those same folks are the fruits blowing this thread out of the water...never once did i say any one farm DUMPED the horse at the sale. that would be entirely out of line. i dont hate the guy who dumpe my horse at the auction
