Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I dont think Ryehill will care, honestly. I know of a horse that is safe, but basically got dumped on a farm in PA...friend took the horse on trial, didnt want to buy him and they told her they couldnt take him back. This was a nice horse with a great race record (placed in Graded Stakes).

I really wish I had the room to take them all, it really makes my heart heavy. I have a field with 4 that I brought home from the track and will not sell (broodmares, some retired) because I would never forgive myself if they ended up in a bad situation.

While I feel for those horses, those prices are insane. It is truly blackmail to ask for that much money.

Agree w/ laurierace, why the high price? At Camelot the horses are under $400 on the feedlot. Someone explain. Is this greedy KB's?

but there is a 17 yr old xx mare for $600 also--she truly has little value and if you wanted to buy her to put her down to save her a bad trip --geesh-how do-able is it? You would end up spending $1000 to save one horse a bad trip...

The 17 year old xx mare is a reason I think no one should be judged for putting a horse down at home--she deserved that much.

The mare w the foal I think had Slew o golds sister as the granddam in the mare line (but I may be mixed up w another one on the board...) so she did have class in the family at one point.

I will donate tonight but I have to run now.(wish I had not looked)

If you can get enough to raise the funds I can offer a home for the mare and filly. I know it isn't much but the only thing I can offer is the room (I can accomadate them).

S Box had until noon today. You can email or call AC4H right now if you are interested in her or helping pledge bailtowards her. If she does not find a home, she will most likely be on a trip to a canadian slaughterhouse sunday (tomorrow night)

please see ac4h.com and go to broker listings to view the horse. any horse with an "A" listed on the right hand side is AVAILABLE>

The mare and filly probably have until next week. If you are interested in donating towards them or offering them a home... please contact ac4h via email or phone immediately. your funds that you donate can go towards a specific horse but you need to contact them first.

thanks to everyone who can help

keep in mind that the TB gelding sold to kill at Sugarcreek last night is in IMMEDIATE DANGER. He is on thekill lot right now awaiting his last trailer ride tomorrow night. Bauer (the KB) has agreed to sell him to us for a marked up price. if you are interested in donating towards his bail please contact Bright Futures Farm (do a google search and you will find them) as he will be quaranteened and residing there until he finds a home.

thanks again everyone. keep up the good work!!

I think that the higher prices that some of the kb have set is due to the fact that the laws in Canada have changed with horses going for meat. The most have documentoin that the horses are drug for the past 6 months of the horses life. That mean no deworming or any other type of drugs. Anyone selling a horse that goes to a KB will be asked to fill out papers stating if the horse is drug free... These papers will go with the horse and if the meat test positive for any drugs the KB and other owners on the papers will be in trouble.
At least that is my understanding of what is going on. I was at a low end auction last night and horses went for alot more than normal there has well.

That may be part of it, but I think some of these guys ask what they ask because they know they can. '$xxx or the horse dies' is effective- and if these dealers think they can make that markup they're sure going to try.

I have mixed feelings about these efforts- I want to save horses but hate the emotional blackmail, yet think it's a good thing if dealers find horses have more value alive. Then again, some of these people take their markup from one saved horse to buy two for the kill market. (See? Mixed feelings). I just wish I could somehow find safe landings for all of them, this gets so overwhelming...

So..I'm confused. Are the mare and filly at the auction, or have they already been bought by the KB and awaiting shipment?

they have already been purchased but the KB/feedlot owner and if not purchased, the mare will likely go on the truck to canada (althought both of them really could go on the truck) and the filly will go back to new holland. It could go either way. Its likely both will end up on the truck, but one of them definately will and it will most likely be the mare since she is he biggest

just waned to let everyone know that the TB bought for kill by Bauer at Sugarcreek on friday is now SAFE. They will be trying to pick him up today, if not, they will get him tomorrow. We have lots of people to thank this week for crossposting, donating, and opening their hearts and barns to some horses in need. As much as i hate to say it we also have Bauer to thank. This guy is usually hard as concrete when it comes to dealing with him. he usually never even considers selling to rescues and he sure as hell never lets anyone on his farm to come and "save" a horse. In the past two weeks he has allowed one private buyer to save a TB and this week he's allowed bright Futures to take this guy home. Hopefully he continues this trend

The TB mare and filly now have photos up on ac4h. they are skinny and in need of some TLC.

Any horse still listed as available on their listings has a strong possibility of shipping to slaughter tonight. not sure if they will consider any more purchases but if you are interested....please contact ac4h NOW and ask them if the KB would take any more purchases

Thanks everyone who has helped out. a lot of horses got a second chance at life and a great home this week due to generous people like you!! Have a great sunday and keep praying for those who will be making that sad trip this evening

The prices are high because the feedlot knows that these horses are posted online and people with bleeding hearts will fork over the dough.

It's a catch 22. You pull more horses by listing them online but you may save fewer because they are so expensive. Horses that don't make it onto the internet go for about $300. Often less.

This is a big reason I find these threads so distasteful. "Hurry and 'save' a horse before it is killed! Only minutes to go!"

Kill buyers are consummate business men. They do not care much if the horse is sold to slaughter or a new home. The mark up just means more money for them and generally people will pay to 'save' the horse. If it goes to kill, it goes to kill. They are not shaking their fist and scuffing their shoe in the dirt because they were prevented from 'killing' a horse. They are just running a business.

Originally posted by farmgirl88 View Post

It is this kind of attitude that makes communication difficult. Bauer is not at fault for running a business, but yet he is condemned. He should instead simply be thanked for helping. If I were a kill buyer, I would find all this 'saving' and 'rescuing' talk very demeaning to the business that I run that I am able to run because other people just don't care about the animal they bought for a purpose.

A kill buyer is like a beef cattle producer. They send cattle to the slaughter every year because it is their business. Leaving aside any discussion on quality of the slaughterhouses.

If you want to direct your ire anywhere, it should be at the people who sent the horse to the auction without worrying about where it was going anyway.
