Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Canadian Bill to Stop Slaughter for Human Consumption?

Mods, please close and add to the other thread if this has already been discussed...

First...let me say that I am NOT anti-slaughter. I think there is a time and a place for it. I think it should be as humane as possible, not done in a production style plant, and done locally, as it is in Europe. I believe Canada should stop allowing unknown U.S. horses by the truckload over our borders carrying who-knows-what, with no health or ownership verification.

A Bill has been tabled, and I will quote the original thread from another site....

CHDC: Canada Tables C-544 to Ban Horse Meat for Human Consumption

Before you say huh?, tabling a bill in Canada is a good thing as opposed to tabling a bill in the states!

This just in from CHDC's Sinikka Crosland [we also have a version in French if anyone needs it!]

Bill C-544: An Act to prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption in Canada

Here is Bill C-544, "An Act to amend the Health of Animals Act and the Meat Inspection Act (slaughter of horses for human consumption)", tabled on June 16, 2010: http://www2.parl.gc.ca/HousePublicat...guage=e&Mode=1. Click on the various sub-titles on the left of the document.

Today's media release from MP Alex Atamanenko is copied below.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    JUNE 17, 2010

ATAMANENKO MOVES TO BAN HORSE MEAT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

OTTAWA - New Democrat Agriculture Critic, Alex Atamanenko (BC southern Interior) tabled a Private Members Bill (C-544) yesterday that would effectively shut down the slaughtering of horses for human consumption in Canada.

"The fact is that drugs which are prohibited for use during the life of any animals destined for the uman food supply are routinely being administered to horses," said Atamanenko. "It is irresponsible for Canada to allow the sale of meat from horses as a food item when they have never been raised in accordance with the food safety practices required for all other animals."

Atamanenko points to the inexpensive, easily available and widely used anti-inflammatory drug, phenylbutazone (bute), as one example of what is quite likely to be prevalent in horsemeat. Bute is a known carcinogen and its use is illegal in any animal that enters the food supply.

"It is more likely than not that the vast majority of horses will have been administered bute, or 'horse's aspirin' as it is commonly called," said Atamanenko.

According to Atamanenko, at least fifty per cent of the horses being slaughtered in Canada are imported from the US where horse slaughter has been banned. The meat is then sold to markets in Europe. There are no regulations in the US to prevent horse owners from administering banned substances because horses are not regarded or treated as food-producing animals.

Under pressure from the European Union (EU), Canada is set to introduce a new 'equine passport' system to track the health history and medical treatments of horses arriving at slaughterhouses, including those from the States.

Atamanenko believes that it will be impossible for CFIA to verify data in these passports and expects to see a high incidence of inaccurate records.

"Many in the US believe it should be our job to verify information from US horses since Canada is the only one slaughtering them for human consumption," concluded the Atamanenko. "It's a stretch to think that information on hundreds of thousands of unwanted horses that were never raised to be food, will be complete or accurate."

This was just released from EWA - Equine Welfare Alliance

Me back again....I believe that the EU will begin their new regulations for health papers or 6 month feed-lotting on July 31st, but I'm wondering if, at some point, they are just going to decide the whole thing is too much trouble?

If this Bill goes through, the EU will be out of luck up here and those of you who live in the US better get LOUD about not allowing US horses to cross the Mexican border or it is going to get REALLY ugly.

    NJR

Canadians....this is the MP's e-mail, if you'd like to drop him a note of support and congratulaions... atamaa@parl.gc.ca and ALSO, give your OWN MP a call and e-mail him/her the link...maybe attach a video or two from those ones that came out a few months ago...and make it CLEAR how YOU want him/her to vote.

You may want to include in the letter a correction, that horse slaughter has NOT been banned in the USA, as it states in his bill.

That "Equine Welfare Alliance" group that sent that does know better, we have discussed that before with it's main officer.
Do you know who they represent?

Bluey is right...horse slaughter has not been banned here but the last slaughterhouses operating were shut down at a State level. There has been legislation introduced to ban slaughter but it was blocked by meat industry interests from being voted on at the Senate level.

There have been various attempts to set up slaughterhouses in western states, mainly, since then but to my knowledge, none have opened up.

Now with the increasing tight restrictions on horsemeat being exported to the EU (which is where the US horses were being sent also) I have no idea how horse slaughter would ever be feasible again barring an expensive passport system here in the US also. Considering that horses slaughtered represent only 1% of the total US horse population, it would seem unlikely that they'd find much support in the horse owners to implement a drug tracking system here so a few horses can be killed for human consumption.

Mexican slaughterhouses selling to the EU markets will be under similar restrictions as Canada to produce clean, safe meat so I'm not sure we'll see an increase in exports to Mexico.

Yes, I am well aware of the semantics, but it really doesn't change the big picture for the average Joe does it? Bottom line is, horses ARE NOT BEING slaughtered in factory-type situations for human consumption like what is happening in Canada. No matter the reason.

On to other things...Bluey, we've all got our agendas. I stated mine earlier.

        As to your point/question...
I have no idea how horse slaughter would ever be feasible again barring an expensive passport system here in the US also. Loopholes anyone?
        Canadian Food Inspection Association:
Effective January 31, 2010, equine owners, intending to sell animals directly or indirectly to Canadian meat processors, are being advised to record certain information....Anyone selling equine may have to provide an EID at ownership transfer. The document will require an owner-signed declaration to verify the accuracy of the information.
        Italics mine.

Of course, no one would LIE.

        Another loophole?
1.Have any drugs or vaccines been administered to or consumed by the animal during the shorter of the following 3 periods: since January 31, 2010, in the last 180 days, or during the time you owned the animal? Circle Yes or No. If yes, write the name the drug(s) or vaccine(s), last date of use, withdrawal period(s) *** and for drugs, the amount used (dose) per treatment if the label does not indicate a dose or if drug is used at a dosage different than the label indicates

If the "owner" bought the horse 2 days ago and tossed him on a truck with 20 others, does that become the "shorter of the following three periods", and he's free and clear?

If the records are only required to have been begun in January 2010, how will anyone know if a horse was given Bute BEFORE that time?

Guess who is in charge of checking all this paperwork? The operator of the slaughterhouse. We all know what a great job they've done with other aspects of the job.

Also, if any of you is involved in any aspects of the industry that regularly sell to "auction", have a look at their websites or ask around...Chances are very few of the people who are actually in the industry will even know this is happening. Certainly here, that is the case.

        Cluster____doesn't begin to describe it.
