Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Lightning is so unpredictable. We had lightning hit our barn about ten years ago. It was the most frightening thing I've ever experienced!

The front peak of the roof took the hit. It blew out some wood around the small peak vent, went down and burnt through the electrical wiring and got in the wiring system from there. It eventually went out the ground, but on its way took out ONE box fan (out of eight) on the opposite end of the barn, scorched the light switch in our house that turns the flood lights on remotely and continued on past the house and down into the well where it burnt out our well pump.

My 34 yo, done it all been with me forever horse was in the stall with the burnt out fan and he was terrified. Everyone else was fine. We were incredibly lucky and our system was very well grounded.

Lightning can and does act in very unpredictable ways. It takes some things and bypasses others.

Again, I am sorry for the loss of these two horses. But everyone here needs to take a breath. Jeez people, let it go. This doesn't need to be a trainwreck thread. Just let it go and chalk it up to a misunderstanding.

The above post is an opinion, just an opinion. If it were a real live fact it would include supporting links to websites full of people who already agreed with me.

Don't think for a minute a horse inside a building couldn't be struck by lightning!!
The end of May we had a bolt of lightning hit the side of our house, blew a big hole in it and pushed the outside siding and inside wall into the middle of the room. I shudder to think what would have happened if anyone had been standing there.
We were fortunate that nobody was hurt, the house didn't burn down (insulation was smoldering ) and we only had to replace wall, computer, phone lines and a tv.
Lightning can do anything it wants to!!

I remember when you first posted about that!!! Scary!

A friend of mine's mare was knocked flat when lightning struck nearby in her pasture. She must have had a brain injury from the impact. It took several months for her to be completely steady on her feet again. They never rode her again, but she recovered enough to be a pet for the rest of her life.

That is so sad but at least they didn't lose her.
I'm totally punchy about lightning and my horses. I always put them in the barn but since the house thing I'm not confident they are safe anywhere...

My coaches farm house was hit by lightning and it burnt down.No human was in it, i think they lost a cat though. but our stallion was in the field about 15 feet from the house.I can't imagine what he was thinking as a house the house of his beloved rider was burning down in front of him.

The house across the street from my brother's was struck by lightning a year or two ago - his kids were quite freaked out as everyone on their street lost power and the house that was hit actually caught fire.

Strangely enough, there was a dramatic increase in the number of lightning rods on houses in their immediate vicinity right after...

Ok, so this thread was started as a simple call for help. Then it has gone from nastyness, to weather channel information to crazy lightning stories for all to be educated...funny how these things evolve.

Since I am the one who started this thread I will explain and put this whole thing to rest now.
I posted it because the owner of this horse called me crying from FL and was so confused and scared she could not remember where the horse was, he was leased out long distance by her trainer. So I posted this immediately to see if anyone had any detailed info so I could drive there and help. We tought is was Leesburg but it ended up being near Oxford, PA.....
We were all confused about the sequence of events and agree that this whole story sounds insane. At the time we did not know details and it was assumed that the lightning coincided with the bad storm and it all happened withing an hour of each other.
The facts are accurate now, 2 horses died because of lightning impact and it is unreal that in times of pain and fear all you posters worry about is "being right and prooving others wrong", when all we needed were answers and empathy.

May Matti rest in peace and forgive all those that judged too quickly and never got to meet the one and only Friesian that made it into the Vogue Magazine, posing with Gisele Bundchen, yes he was famous in his fan club. We love you matti. Period!

Cut us a break. If it sounded insane to you, how do you think it sounded to us?

People have come onto this BB with sob stories that turned out to be complete fabrications. Including things like:

                    1) Being in the hospital dying of cancer.
                    2) Being in the hospital, paralyzed from a broken neck sustained in a fall off a horse.
                    3) Horse needing emergency euthanasia and could anyone please help the owner put the horse down.
                    4) Weird stories about horses assisting in accidents involving semi's and cattle.

Those are just the ones off the top of my head. There are dozens more. All lies.

Many of these posters start off with a somewhat plausible story. As "details" emerge, the story develops conflicts. Eventually the poster is exposed as a fraud; but often several people have gone out of their way to render assistance to the fraudulent poster. One poster opened her home to a person only to find out the person was nuts. People have received death threats, threats to their business, threats to their animals.

Usually, there are people who are ready and eager to help the OP; even taking the time out of their day to render assistance by driving, lending money or equipment, or meeting the person.

When the story ends up being a total lie - everyone is made a fool of.

That has happened so many times on this BB that regular posters are VERY suspicious of these odd stories.

This BB is chocked full of compassionate, empathetic horsemen who would (and do) go to the ends of the earth to help a horseman in need.

YOU are the one who posted a story full of inaccuracies and misinformation; by your own admission. How do you expect people to react?

I am very sorry for the tragic loss of any horse, and I am sorry for this one as well. My deepest condolences to the owner.

But you need to take a step back and evaluate your posts. We are not the ones at fault here, you are. And posters did not deserve your nasty responses to their inquiries, nor did they deserve to be accused of a lack of compassion.

People were ready and willing to help - if only you had been supplied them with reliable, verifiable information.

                    Once burnt, twice shy.

the reason we posted our stories was so that people the doubted that lightning can do stuff, knew that anything can happen when it comes to lightning.

Just relax, take a deep breath. Most of us are sorry for your loss.

Have I told you lately that I love you? Not in a sick, stalker-y sort of way. In a 'I love how you can be the voice of reason and write the posts I don't want to have to.' way.

And I'll add to the OP, I am sorry for the losses to those who knew and loved the horses. I lost a horse living out in pasture to lightning once. I wouldn't let my guys out during storms for years afterwards. If left quite a lingering mark. It has been nearly 20 years, but I can still clearly see him laying there..

If I got angry , I am sorry , i felt a select few here , were very rude and i put my defences up. For one to be angered , one must be provoked . And if I offended anyone who was not accusing or making false accusations , i am sorry. And again bottom line is we lost a wonderful horse.

                                      Matsjo's Owner

                                      Hello All,

My name is Stacey and I am Matsjo’s owner. While doing a search I came across this forum and am very upset by some of the post’s I’ve read.

Matty was my dream horse… I grew up in a very small town in southern NJ. We are middle class, far from wealthy… my parents had a daughter who had big dreams and they did everything in their power to give me the opportunity to live them. We fell in love with Mat and purchased him in late 2000. My father emptied his savings account to purchase Mat for me. I kept Mat in FL with my trainer at the time and flew down once a month to train with him and show at WEF. I was even invited to be on a young rider team (but my mom made me go to college first). Through the years we brought Mat home to NJ and when I completed college, he and I moved back to FL so we could continue our Dressage training. Unfortunately, I became very ill and was diagnosed with Endometriosis. The pain became chronic and I could not do the simplest things in life, let alone ride. Mat was moved back to NJ and he was kept with my trainer there to continue working and showing until I could get better, which took 5 years, many experimental drugs, and 3 surgeries.

Since last December, Mat was leased to a vet, a very close friend of my mothers. She kept him on their beautiful farm in PA, took great care of him, rode and loved on him. This was all a horrible accident, and no one is to blame. A bad lightning storm hit, their half Friesian mare was killed instantly, Mat got hit as well and was thrown/ran into the run-in shed wall head first. A cow in another pasture was also struck and died. They worked on Mat for several days, giving him EVERY chance to turn around. Thanks to Murk’s owner, I was able to fly from FL to PA to spend time with my boy and make the best decision for him. I stayed by his side all night in his stall. I massaged his head, groomed his mane, ran my hands over his gorgeous neck and shoulders, and rested my head on his heart…. I talked to him about everything; about how excited we were to meet him, and so happy to have him in our family, all of his silly antics and the lessons he taught me. I thanked him for being in my life, and told him how much I loved him, and always will.

July 18th he let us know it was time. I knelt by his neck and rested by head on his cheek, crying… talking into his ear. My mother and I were by his side, holding him, and well as the vet and her family, our Matty-Boy passed away surrounded by LOVE.

Matsjo is resting on a hill in PA, and running free in Heaven, waiting for me.

This is not a situation of a rich kid who bought a horse, then killed him for insurance money. Matsjo WAS NOT insured. Matsjo was priceless to me and my family. He touched many lives; anyone who met him knew what a special boy he was. I wouldn’t trade my experiences and life with Mat for anything!!

To those who have posted condolences, thank you very, very much. To everyone else, please do not talk ill of my horse, family and friends.

Stacey, I am very sorry for the loss of your handsome and obviously much-loved Matsjo. May your happy memories of him soon far outshine your grief.
