Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.
Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

As a minor aside, there is a trainer who works with freisians, who recently moves up to PA after working out of MD. Pretty sure he went up to the oxford area, so I'm thinking that could have something to do with the location confusion.
The rest of the crazy on this thread, I'm leaving alone...

As for the OP - why would the op be asked to go to the horse but not provide the contact information. Why would the OP come to a BB to ask where the horse was? Wouldn't the OP know? Because the OP was asked to go there by the horse's owner? This is the wierdest thread in a while. Ooh! Nobody said a word about anything "wrong" being done, just alot "wrong" about the original post and your comments!! So, now that you brought it up, what do you think was done wrong? A bit hot off the mark, eh? There was no lighting, and no earthquake, but a horse died (or two) with apparently big insurance coverages, and someone comes to a big, public, BB to announce the magical connection between a non-exitant lighting strike and a non-existant (in PA) earthquake and the horse's dath, and now YOU are talking insurance money!! Veeerrrry interesting!!! What do you want to bet there will soon be a collection attempt on the said fresian's insurance policy!!Originally posted by Murkuryrising View Postvery rude as YOU DONT KNOW HIM AT ALL.. and if you are slighting anything wrong here was done to him, think libel before you write again. Too bad you announced it on a Bullitin Board where thinking horsemen know that what you describe isn't kosher.
And, by the way, speculation is not libel. If you were a poster or reader on this board, you would know what "a ditch and a truck" meant.
And, if you were going to post a story with sketchy details, you would know not to do it on COTH.Last edited by Moderator 1; Jul. 20, 2010, 08:23 AM.Airborne? Oh. Yes, he can take a joke. Once. After that, the joke's on you.

oh, I love this. Mercury become Murky....how could we know with the spelling? And lightning coming from and earthquake? Another wow for me.
I get it, lightning (not lightening, which just causes one to float) CAN kill horses, but I'm kind of surprised a stabled horse is going to get a direct strike inside a building and then be thrust against a wall. Sounds more like an IED to me.
Regardless, I'm sorry the horse is dead, but damn....what a bizarre thread. Two states, a majikal horse and two, count em two forces of nature, all wrapped up into a head shaker of a post.Ellipses users clique ...

Murkuryrising happens to be my horses name , i didnt name him, sorry to you for his mis spelled name thats how they do things over seas. and we we not there hear it all threw the grape vine , the filly was struck and killed by" lightning," its a very sad world we live in when , all one can do is point out mis spelled words in ones time of sorrow, nice. And i do agree it wasa bizarre thing to happen , but it did, but to try to belittle me ? only makes you look very feeble minded, and lacking in depth.. you must all be groupies lol i get it now" lol too cute... Thank you so much for your kind words, in this room of heartless people, you have the heart of a saint..Originally posted by LLDM View PostLook, just because the OP probably doesn't have their facts straight doesn't mean her friend's horse didn't die. Ease up a little guys. It's likely things happened fast and were confusing, esp. since her/his friend was likely a bit distraught and dealing with everything long distance (from FL). Plus, it sounds like she/he is on the periphery of the whole situation.
To the OP, I am sorry about your friend's horse regardless of the circumstances. Please forgive the weirdness - there have been more than our share of "crazee's" here lately.
If you ever get the whole story and permission to share, you will likely get a sympathetic respose from this board. If not, don't worry about. Sometimes tragedies get to remain private.

It was me who wrote it. I don't have drunken house guests.Originally posted by Murkuryrising View Postroflmao, it sounds like you or whoever wrote it threating the wner of the horse, to me . a tractor a hole , hello, she had no insurance , come on someone in here must have half a brain and maybe a quarter of a soul..
I posted the link to the forensic weather site so that the owner of the dead horses could back up the claim of lightning in the event the insurance company had a problem accepting the cause of death. No insurance, no corporate disbelief, no need for the forensic weather site.
For what it's worth, "cows, truck & really big ditch" was referring to this thread: http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/sh...d.php?t=140462 Long story short, a very heartwrenching story of a "child saved from being hit by a truck that just smacked 40-some cows when the OTTB he was riding jumped a really big ditch" that turned out to be a total fake after people who lived in the area came on to the thread and called BS. You're legitimately new to the board, so it's completely understandable that you didn't get the reference.
Well, for starters, I happen to live in the shake zone of the MD quake. I experienced the shaking first-hand and knew that dressageluv's dramatic claim of earthquake-caused death was incorrect to say the least. I also was not aware of a lightning storm in Leesburg area at the time, which combined with two very different locations of the farm, caused me to raise an eyebrow at the validity of the entire story. I make no apologies for questioning it.Originally posted by Murkuryrising View Postwhy do you all have teouble believing in the forces of mother nature
You've cleared up that the horse was in PA and it was indeed lightning. My eyebrow is no longer raised, red flags are lowered and spidey-sense is off. Thank you for clearing it up.
I am sorry it's a true story because that means the horses are really and sincerely dead and that sucks. I'm sorry for your loss.I'm not arguing, I'm just explaining why I'm right

Good Lord you guys. TWO HORSES HAVE DIED. There is an owner(s) who is hurting right now. Who the heck cares where it happened or what force of nature caused it???? Same outcome. This is why people have felt comfortable coming to the bb for YEARS. To gain a little perspective, a little hope, or worst case scenario, a little COMPASSION.
I am truly very sorry for your loss.

I mistook the inconsistencies in dressageluv's posts as an yet another attempt at dramatic emotional manipulation like the OTTB thread l linked or the classic "tranquilizer" thread(s) http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/sh...d.php?t=176308Originally posted by Quinn View PostWho the heck cares where it happened or what force of nature caused it????

When I was 16, I personally witnessed a small herd of 8 horses get stuck by lightning as they were standing under a cluster of trees. I wasn't even 30 feet away just inside the mouth of the barn. We lost 2 babies and 2 momma's... and not matching pairs.
A TB mare walked to the middle of the pasture and collapsed, but she went on to make a full recovery. Another mare, who wasn't affected, herded the 2 living babies to the upper pasture and corralled them there until we could bring them in. Neither baby was hers, if I recall correctly. It was a long time ago.
I still dream of that night. I had a premonition just before it happened of the scene from "The Man from Snowy River" when Jess's horse is struck by lightning. Not 30 seconds later as I watched, those horses died the same way.
My heart goes out for the horse owners and their loss.Dreaming in Color
