Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Feedback on Pessoa turnout blankets and sheets?

I need to buy a new set of clothes for a new horse. My other two horses have Rhino blankets. Although I thought I was in the "I'll never buy anything but Horsewear blankets again" camp, their condition at the end of the second season has made me re-think that stance (nothing bad, but several little repairs that need to be made to blankets worn by easy-on-their-clothing horses). I also found a good deal on a Pessoa midweight in the new horse's size, so I thought I'd explore the idea...

Your experiences and feedback? Fit? Sturdiness? Hardware? Waterproof/Breathability?

    Thanks!

One of our boarders had the Pessoa Alpine last year. The blanket itself held up fairly well, but then again, this horse did not socialize with the other horses. Not sure what kind of abuse it can take from playing.

I really didn't like the cheap plastic snaps on the front of the blanket. They broke in less than two weeks.

I have a Pessoa alpine turnout blanket and really like it. I haven't had problems with the snaps (but then I just snap it and then take it on and off like a closed front). The horse that it is on is turned out alone, but is very hard on blankets. He shredded a couple of Schneider's blankets before I got him the Pessoa.

I have one of the Pessoa Summit Turnout Sheets that is going on 4 years now. As far as the hardware, it's not plastic...it's black-coated metal. I resprayed waterproofing on it this spring (not because it needed it, but I typically do all of my turnouts ever 2 years or so). The piping in the one corner is starting to fray a bit, but the sheet is structurally sound. I even had a lazy "oops" moment where I was putting it on my mare in the pasture without a halter or lead (yes...bad!). I got the front buckles done, but something spooked her before I did the surcingles and leg straps. It twisted down in front of her and tripped her so she went down on her knees. After making sure she was ok, I was afraid to see the condition of my sheet. I was amazed. the inside mesh was fine and nothing tore. The holes in the nylon straps for the front closure did get pulled a bit, but it is still perfectly fine.

        Definitely worth the money!

I bought the Alpine midweight turnout rug in September of last year. While my horse managed to rip big holes in his stable sheet and stable blanket, this turnout suffered no damage whatsoever to the exterior. However, the inside did not fare well at all. The lining ripped along the spine from front to back like a piece of tissue paper. Not the longevity I expected for the cost.

I really disliked my Pessoa blanket. It was a flysheet. It fit very small compared to other brands, and I was putting it on a Thoroughbred!

The fabric was cheap and tore readily...the Centaur and Saxon sheets I had were similar but much better constructed (higher quality thread, stronger stitching patterns at anchor points, better trim materials and hardware.)

I pretty much just buy custom blankets now from a local manufacturer.

My Pessao turnout sheet is going on two years now with no rips and completely waterproof while my Schneiders blankets have tears and lost their waterproofing.

I've had a Pessoa stable blanket for a couple of years, and it's held up super well! It also fit's my high-withered, large shouldered beast really well!

I picked up an Alpine mid-weight in the middle of last winter for a TB rescue. It was the first time I had ordered a Pessoa. Within 2 days the snap on the chest broke... and not the tiny, thin part of the snap, the big body of the snap. I was shocked. I took a picture of it and sent it to the company I had ordered it from, and they did give me a credit to get it replaced. I had to wait a couple days to bring it in for the repair, but in that time the other snap went (I had no other blanket to put on him at the time that would fit him). So needless to say I won't be buying another Pessoa. It's a well put together blanket, but the hardware is terrible.

ACK! The SMELL! Honestly, the Pessoas start to STINK in no time at all. I got a mid-weight stable blanket for my old guy, just for nightly stall use. (Use other brand name turn out rugs for day time in winter), and the Pessoa stable blanket takes on every single smell...... all the urine and poop, it's just nasty. I bed my stalls well, and they are not unduly messy in the morning. I washed this rug several times, and in only one night they get to smelling badly again. None of the other brand rugs do this. As for quailty construction and fit, that's fine. I hate the smell of this rug so much I want to toss it - but it's so sturdy and tough I can't bring myself to just chuck it. It's been so bad I'll use it for two nights, then just leave his turn out on to spare him the indignity of having to sleep in stink for another night. What to do? Spot cleaning does no good, the whole thing is just plain yukky.

Buttercup, you wouldn't believe what I went though trying to clean that same Pessoa I was speaking of above.. same horse (granted, at that point the chest was being held together with bailing twine before I was able to get it fixed) ran into a skunk. That blanket reeked for WEEKS. And washing blankets in the winter when you have no washing machine that is big enough and no laundromat will let you walk in with a skunky binkie is no easy task. I literally buried it in the snow on sunny days when he could be without it, and slowly the smell went out. I've had horses get sprayed before, and the stink was out in a day or 2. The poor horse was just a massive walking stink before I was able to get it out to be fixed. Didn't want to kill the repair person with the odor, after all

I must say I LOVE the blanket. It survived the winter and cleans up very well. The buckle on the front broke but it only broke because he got caught on the stall door. So if you get the opportunity to buy one on sale I'd jump on it. So what if the clip in front breaks...go to Southern States or Tractor Supply and buy a new clip. They are super easy to switch out. It even fit my rather hard to fit horse pretty well.

Only downside...he got stuck with the BRIGHT purple one thanks to his size.

I have a Pessoa Alpine Mid-Weight Turnout for my gelding. He's high withered and thick necked, with a very broad chest and it fits him just fine. He's had it for two years and even spent an entire winter wearing it on field board with 7 really abusive mares. The blanket has held up beautifully. It looks brand new.

I paid full retail at a local tack shop, but I got it in Black & Grey Plaid. It's really sharp.

I really want to like my Pessoa turnout sheet but I absolutely loathe the mesh lining. It makes my horse's coat dull and collects giant hairballs inside the mesh when you wash it. They do have access holes where you can stick your arm in and try to grab out the hairballs. The sheet I have is probably 3 or 4 years old so maybe their design has improved by now.

If the blankets you are looking at have a smooth nylon lining I would go for it. The durability seems to be very good for the price.

I bought the Pessoa Summit Turnout Sheet for my very hard wearing mare last fall, and I love it. It doesnt have any tears or snags in it! I love this sheet, I am guessing it will hold up for quite some time.

my horse wears his Pink Pessoa turnout sheet in the winter time when it's wet--no fill, just the waterproof shell. Gosh, I've had it since they came out, like maybe 5 or 6 years now at least.

Best blanket I've ever had--hasn't torn, doesn't shift, cleans like a dream and is still waterproof. I will concur on the gathering of hairballs inside the lining, but you just have to open the slit and take them out, it's no big deal.

Love the blanket, and the price was great. Wouldn't buy anything else, and this from someone who had to really look hard for 1680- denier blankets with warranties---my Pessoa rocks.
