Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Does anyone show at Rolling Hills anymore? What are the classes like and how late in the evening do the shows run? I am new to showing and will be in the beginner/novice classes and wanted to know if going was worth the long drive.

Haven't shown Rolling Hills in a LONG time. I like Elite showjumping, RMI, and Horseshow Ventures for local shows.

I have some friends who show at Rolling Hills. They say the competition is pretty good because it's in Alpharetta where a lot of the more expensive barns and horses are.

I show with the New Classic series in Cartersville. Their website is http://www.simplesite.com/newclassichorseshows
That might be a good option for you as well.

Gosh - it's been about 11 years since I showed there, and I'm assuming (hoping) it has improved since then. (It was a fun show, the schooling arena/area was just pretty scary) We DO have a lot of great schooling show series here in Ga. Vic started Elite Show Jumping, and his older sister - my old trainer - started Southern Hunter Jumper of Georgia - www.shjg.com which even has a fun Hunter Derby at some of their shows. And then there is Boots and Britches Schooling Shows which my old trainer also started. Of course there are several other show series, those are just the ones off the top of my head.

Unless something has radically changed, the "more expensive barns and horses" are not regulars at Rolling Hills - you might occasionally see someone use one of those shows for practice or to work out an issue, but even in those situations there were usually other local shows that better fit the bill.

A friend used to judge there and I've stopped by before, and what I recall is that they were rather chaotic and very much an "open" show where you saw a little bit of everything, and a lot that was pretty rough around the edges. That said, they had a regular following and people seemed to have a good time, so it is all a matter of what you are looking for and what suits your personal needs/situation.

I have always heard it referred to as "Rolling Thrills", probably for the reason Madison mention...a little bit rough around the edges and chaotic.

I think most local people use the HSV and Elite shows vs. the Rolling Hills shows...but thats just my observation.

What kind of classes are you thinking of doing?

If you check out ghja.org and go to the calander, you can select simple local shows (by unchecking "A", "AA", etc at the top) and you can get a good idea of whats out there...most have websites where you can check out prizelists, etc.

HJ Fox did a few local shows last year too...we did a couple of them just to get to ride at a different venue than Wills...they were ok...not run very efficiently but there seemed to be lots of class options and they were good for green horses and riders...filled classes but not the 30+ entries for each that you can see at the locals closer to town...(it took almost 4 hours to run a Jr/Sr section at Wills at the last local I did!! )

HAHA - that's what we used o call them too! What always scared me were the kids in the schooling arena (though it was just an area back then) who would insist on jumping their horses/ponies over these big 4 ft+ oxers over, and over, riding them in Kimberwick's. Was really scary....

I've never showed at Rolling Hills, so I was just repeating what I had heard. It might not be reliable.

I was actually kind of intimidated to go to Rolling Hills because of what I had heard, but based on what you all are saying, I probably don't have anything to worry about!

Some of them actually ARE nowadays, Madison. It's where they bring their green horses and beginning show riders. You also get a lot of cross-training eventers (which my barn was). We took my baby greenie there last year to trot around, and my trainer and I both made the same mistake, thinking it would be like it was 10+ years ago. WRONG.

The upside: MUCH better course design, MUCH better judging, MUCH better organized; it's as good as any GHJA Local show now. Nice folks, too!

The downside: JAM PACKED, especially the beginner and greenie divisions.

I didn't find the warmup ring any scarier than at any GHJA show, to be honest.

We may be there at their August show simply b/c it's the day before a rated ASB show at the same venue, so why not? But given how hot the lower rings at Wills can be in August I'm hoping the numbers won't be as huge as they were last November.

With all due respect, I have to agree with Madison on this one.

I think the regulars are a nice bunch of folk and they have a good time. A fine place to go for cheap miles.

And you think HSV shows are less scary than RH??? Wow....

Look: I'm oldskool, and I'm also an AOT, so I don't have to hunt where my trainer says hunt. I'm also not really there to snark at the competition; I've got better things to do. I AM there to put miles on a baby greenie, and for me, RH shows are a steal of a deal - especially b/c they usually run the day before the rated ASHA show at the same venue, so I can pick up ASHA/USEF points in the flat division at that & mileage over fences at RH.

Bottom line - I refuse to pay quadruple the money to be treated like sh*t by RMI and go over the EXACT same courses at the EXACT same venues with a LOT of the same judges. When my horse is competing at RATED heights, we'll do the rateds. Short of that - probably not.

I for one think Rolling Hills is a great place to get cheap show miles. For those who want to put it down that is solely your opinion.

Rolling Thrills? Well, yeah, if your gonna have barrel racing going on next to a hunter ring that is less than desirable. But that is what that show is all about. Attracting all kinds of people to get to get out and horse show.

I agree with a lot of what WA said. Much better judging, organization, rubber mats in all stalls, M-10 footing. Do I show there? No, but when I started out with my young hunter is was perfect. I actually find the warm up arena at GHJA shows much more hectic. Trainers trying to one up each other with their students. One barn hogging up the ring without common courtesy of left to left. LOL. People at Rolling Hills just don't know any better half the time. bless their hearts...

So I say go for it. Have fun. Go to Rolling Hills to get back into showing.

Not for me - I want my young'un to be able to deal with EVERYTHING, and take great pains to expose him to as much weird stuff as possible. If you're worried about it though, just school REALLY late at night or REALLY early in the morning.

Agree totally w/ Good Booie about the warmup rings! They're always a problem at Wills no matter what shows you're doing, but at least at RH there are fewer in it, going slower, jumping lower. I far prefer that.

Just as an FYI, the one I went to in November, they ran the gaming AFTER the hunter show, in the same ring the hunters were using as the Beginner ring. It didn't start until about 7. They were starting that when we were checking out.

It's really gotten a lot better than it was.

haha, I agree. The weirder the better. What the heck. I would be waiting to do my round and a barrel racer would be coming back after his last barrel and crash in the gate. oh well. That was so long ago but the memory is still there. Good to hear they have rearranged the gaming classes.

WA, what show are you doing in August? I will be showing at Wills in August too.

As of right now the plan is to do RH on Aug. 14 and stay over for the ASHAG Olde Milton show on Aug. 15 to flat him in the ASB Hunters. What about you?
