Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You're responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the Forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it--details of personal disputes may be better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts, though are not legally obligated to do so, regardless of content.

Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting. Moderators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts unless they have been alerted and have determined that a post, thread or user has violated the Forums' policies. Moderators do not regularly independently monitor the Forums for such violations.

Profanity, outright vulgarity, blatant personal insults or otherwise inappropriate statements will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Users may provide their positive or negative experiences with or opinions of companies, products, individuals, etc.; however, accounts involving allegations of criminal behavior against named individuals or companies MUST be first-hand accounts and may NOT be made anonymously.

If a situation has been reported upon by a reputable news source or addressed by law enforcement or the legal system it is open for discussion, but if an individual wants to make their own claims of criminal behavior against a named party in the course of that discussion, they too must identify themselves by first and last name and the account must be first-person.

Criminal allegations that do not satisfy these requirements, when brought to our attention, may be removed pending satisfaction of these criteria, and we reserve the right to err on the side of caution when making these determinations.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it's understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users' profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses -- Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it's related to a horse for sale, regardless of who's selling it, it doesn't belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions -- Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services -- Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products -- While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements -- Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be "bumped" excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues -- Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators' discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the alert button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your Ignore list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you'd rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user's membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

This is one of the funniest threads I've read in a long time! And.....I don't even live in VA, nor for that am I a hunt seat rider!! Hilarious, thanks everyone!!!

      Inquiring minds want to know.....
Anyplace....did you get any letters from lawyers yet? You simply must keep us all informed!
Secret interlude....have you noticed how many COTHers have been reading this thread? What an awesome form of (clear throat...)advertisment!

Not sure that it can reach the same number of pages, but this thread is one of the most attention grabbing since I was sucked into the Wild Eyed & Wicked thread a few years ago.

When this thread first appeared, I thought "that might be a good one to take Spy to". (Not THIS weekend, but later)

          Anyplace's post didn't change that.

secret interlude's posts DID change that.
Exactly what i was thinking. I too am an eventer, and I was thinking "wow, thats close to me, i might take my mare to school over some bigger fences"

definately not. Secret interlude just killed all thought of even entering.

BTW, secret, all your doing is turning away business for yourself.. FYI- not a good thing.
Somewhere behind the rider i am now,the coaches who've pushed me,the tears, and the horses i've given my heart to,is a little girl who fell in love with a sport and never looked back. i ride for her

And I'm not even a lawyer.
Agreed. im 15, but holy h**l woman, i learned enough in my freshman year of highschool to tell you that you have NO case. No financial issues involved, no rules broken, you have no BASIS whatsoever for a case against anyone. i believe... yes... you DID ask for people to state their experiences. That wont hold up in court. People are gonna look at this and see all your doing is trying to build up strong OPINIONS against your facilities, horses, shows, whatever.

im sorry hun, but OPINIONS dont do anything for you in a lawsuit. its fact and evidence, which you have none of.

              Awesome Show Day!

I keep asking myself when this thread will die But, I'm itching to throw in my two cents.

Sunday's show was great and I had a blast. I even walked away with a few ribbons, which made the day even better. This was the first time I spent a whole day at a show, and I must say that I was impressed and happy with how everything turned out. The best part was the overall environment. I enjoyed the casual dress code and the laid-back attitude. My kind of scene. It may be looked upon as "white trash" to some, but it was a whole lot more comfortable and inviting than some of the more "classy" shows I've experienced.

Sorry if I sound a tad bitter, but I have been treated rather rudely in the past by a few hunter/jumper snobs who looked down upon me for not owning a horse. And, yes, I have been called "white trash" simply for not having the means to buy my own horse, show apparel, tack, etc. It is utterly degrading and hurts big time. Shame on anyone who uses this foul term to describe another human being.

The bottom line is that it was a fantastic day and I highly encourage everyone to attend and enjoy the next Hollow Oak Farm show. Lynn does everything short of breaking her back to put on a good, fun day. I've worked with her for about three months now (feeding horses and doing barn chores in exchange for riding) and she is one of the kindest people I've ever met. It's rare to meet someone so completely open, accomodating, and downright sweet. I am convinced that she will do anything for anyone. At the same time, she is fiercely passionate about her horses and riding establishment. I can definitely understand how she would be quick to defend herself, especially after witnessing the hard work she endures to keep her establishment in good shape. But I'll keep my nose out of the legal issues; that's definitely outside my realm of knowledge

Anyway, I just wanted to share my feelings and observations, and hopefully tack a nice ending onto a somewhat messy thread. None of it is really important, though. The important thing is that we are all on this forum because of our love of horses and riding, not to cut each other down, call each other names, or make comments about parenting. So, go to the barn, have fun, and hug your horses

So did we, my mare got champion in a division with a rider and a number that she wasn't entered under. Bet that made the other entries feel good.

I really must encourage you to take the time to step out to many of the venues in the surrounding area and see how other horse shows are run. Virginia is full of excellent, well-organized shows that uphold the standards of the Virginia Horse Shows Association, casual or not.

I might also mention that while no one I know would EVER, EVER rip someone apart for not having the money to buy or campaign a horse - we have no problem using "less flattering" terminology in regards to poor, unsportsmanlike, or unprofessional behavior.
                  They're small hearts.

Ok, this has been very interesting, but I have to get clarrification on something:

Someone mentioned a kid being dragged and threatened. WHO was dragging the child, and who did the child belong to? Someone mentioned show management was dragging the kid...was it their kid, or someone else's? Does anyone know why?? It just sounds so bizzarre.

SI, I am sure if ETBW enjoyed your show, it must have been fun. I am kinda scared of you, though. My fear is based solely on what you have written (out of anger), not what others have said. Please stop making people's opinions into more than that. It ruins good, productive (and lively) conversations on the bb. Even IF what was said could be a basis for a lawsuit, are you really that petty? Actions speak louder than words, so just concentrate on having fun shows and don't worry about the small things. Just correct people and ask questions. You definitely don't want to enter and stay in "category 2"!

I'm still back on "deformate". I do not think it means what you think it means.

How common is it to get random people to fill divisions for points then? Is it "legal"? Are people ok with it? Do you need to find people that are comparable to those in the division?

Wow, being a small show manager myself, I would take what was being said as a learning experience and try to improve on the problems areas instead of incorrectly yelling 'slander' and acting like a KRAZY person. I am constantly trying to get feedback from my competitors. I want to know what they think of our shows, how we can improve and what we are doing right. But then again, I want my shows to make money. Not necessarily hand over fist, but we use the money to improve our shows... no one profits from them but the show fund. (Well, my back profitted because we bought all new PVC standards and I no longer have to drag the wood ones around or paint them each year....)

I KNOW a few of my regulars read this board. I would be soooo embarrassed to be ranting and raving and basically telling potential competitors that I couldn't care less if they came or not. I get snarky from time to time, but I don't think I've ever discounted someone's potential participation at my shows so out of hat.

I'm just curious as the show in question's organizer now has multiple supporters chiming in which have only one post each. Alters or friends & family? No slander or libel stated or implied. I'm just a very curious person.

Curious here as well. Perhaps a Sybil Situation (see The Case of the Asswacked Arabian)?

Also no slander or libel implied, stated or transmitted via electrons.

I have read this thread on and off since it started and I always end up with the same responce.....Huh??? Someone please tell me...did I miss something? Did someone delete a post?

First, I have never heard of this farm, don't even live in the area. The post about VHSA Assoc rules actually made me laugh. My first thought was....the VHSA Assoc program has rules??? Who knew! I saw nothing wrong within the post. To me it was just being every other opinion on this board.

And then I really had a chuckle about the VHSA having a copy of this thread. The VHSA has bigger issues to deal with so I would assume this would be handed over to Clyde. This made me laugh even more since the last time I talked with him a couple of months ago he made it very clear in regards to his feelings about bb's in general. But I'll let him speak for himself.

Lawsuit material??? Lord...there are worse things on the horse stick art thread!!!

There are a couple things I have learned over the years. If you put 2 horse people together you're going to get 3 opinions. I have been to and helped put on shows for a few years. In all those years I have never heard of a perfect show....if you have water, then it's too cold, or too hot, doesn't come out fast enough, comes out too fast, the hose is too long, the hose is not long enough. Do these comments mean the show was!! They are opinions!! Frankly, I appreciate knowing such things. I appreciate when people post frankly. I take it all with a grain of salt. If everyone tells me to bring water...then I'll bring water. Horse people are the most hard headed, opinionated folks I know....and I'm one of them and I bet most would want to find out about a show first hand.

That being said, I have to agree with the "all knowing" Janet. Nothing anyone posted would have kept me from going to this show....nothing except the posts from show management.

Wow...I've been away from the board for a few days and look what happens!
                                        Honey badger don't give a sh!t.

Save the court system for people who really need it.....if you hadn't gotten so wound up over this in the first place you would have done yourself a favor. I would still have tried out the show after reading the opinions of the other people. Most of us can make up our own minds after reading other people's thoughts....however, after reading the backlash - now that would have changed my mind about going to the show. I really really hope that people let this go and don't bog down our already overworked legal system with this nonsense
