Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

    He's a palomino paint.

Also - I wear a navy coat when I show him - should I get some rust breeches?

No. Why? Because showing is wrong. You shouldn't need riding clothes because riding a horse is unnatural. Its not fair to his spirit. He needs to be free. You should only get on him if he invites you. And be careful not to worm him. It destroys his natural defenses. I don't understand why people feel they have a right to interfere with nature. Horses are a gift to us from the earth spirits.

        Okaaay, but really

My trainer has a wonderful 10+ mover he'll let me show if I'll pick up the tab- since he's a perfect match for me! He's 18.1 so I know we'll do well! His dad is Rio Grande- some great horse. The owner just doesn't know what she has! Can you believe??!!
Sense I'm 37, and I havn't shown since I was a juner, I need to get familar with showing again, and am also wondering if anything has changed. (I was in the pony ring then.)
My questions are: 1. My trainer says I need to pay a $100 lease fee to show the horse. Does that sound right? I'll make out the charges from the show, to the trainer, and to the owner on the same check to my trainer to make it easier for me- so that's nice.
        2. Can I wear half chaps? Brown with black paddock boots (I think they're custom.) GM likes brown.
        3. Do I have to buy one of those new helmet? of could I attach a chin strip around my old one? It's brown and matches my half chaps.
        4. My saddle doesn't have knees rolls, cause back then we only used knee rolls till we got strong, so will that be good for equitation or what?
        5. Can you use a standing martingale in flat classes yet? This horse has a real high head, and I heard that these hunters today look like quarter horses.
        6. What kind of sunglasses should I get?
Thank you so much! All advice will be greatly appreciated!

That's about right. Don't forget to add trainers fee, day fee, shipping fee, grooms fee, braiding charge and golf cart rental. Oh, you might as well add your USEF, USHJA and local association fees onto the check too. Your trainer can take care of all of it for you.

          2. Can I wear half chaps? Brown with black paddock boots (I think they're custom.) GM likes brown.
No, and don't forget, GM now likes disco spurs.

          3. Do I have to buy one of those new helmet? of could I attach a chin strip around my old one? It's brown and matches my half chaps.
You must really get a new helmet. Be careful though. What was popular yesterday will not be the in thing tomorrow. It is sooo important to look EXACTLY like everyone else.

          4. My saddle doesn't have knees rolls, cause back then we only used knee rolls till we got strong, so will that be good for equitation or what?
A saddle without knee rolls? EEEEKKKK! How would you possible stay in the tack?

          5. Can you use a standing martingale in flat classes yet? This horse has a real high head, and I heard that these hunters today look like quarter horses.
No you can't use a martingale in the u/s. Western tie downs, however, are permissible

          6. What kind of sunglasses should I get?
Be sure to get ones that have Swarovski crystals all over them. You can never have too much bling!

Thank you so much! All advice will be greatly appreciated!
My answers are in bold, above. I hope I answered them all correctly. Just to be sure, you should probably visit another BB like e-equestrian, just to be sure.

Yeah - well we were homeschooled! And I'm socialized just fine.

Well you know what? I'm in college and that makes me smartest out of everyone and you just watch, when I gradiate with my degree in equine studies I'm going to be a Grand Prix Trainer and Rider, just because of my education. I'm never going to have any problems in life because I have a degree and I know, like, everything. I was already champion on my local circuit of W/T/C Beginner Equitation so I should be fine.

I'm going to start training as soon as I graduate and I should be competiting at GP's all across the nation soon, but I'm poor and can't compete because no one will give me anything and everyone is just a snob and you have to have money to win anything. I know that its because I don't have a GPA and don't wear Tailoreds, and my horse can just 5' just fine, I know, he keeps jumping out of his pasture fence which is 6' high barbed wire, he ran through it once so now he jumps it.
Worry, doubt, fear and despair are the enemies which slowly bring us down to the ground and turn us to dust before we die.

Will yall look over my lease? I am (sniff sniff, wipes tear) going to share my FLABULOUS 18 month old half-appaloosa half-shire sorta gelding and need to make sure his teeth are brushed twice daily. Pyorrhea and all, you know.
Lease will take effect after the people who want to look at him pay my customary $500 look-see-fee, have a confirmed appointment and are okay with the fact that human hands have barely touched him.

Well, I have two variations of the lease you're looking for. One includes mouthwash. Do you need that too?

                          Exactly.

And if you do ride, its gotta be bridless and bareback. Because bits (and spurs and whips of COURSE) are evil. I learned THAT on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXR_S...elated&search=

In fact, all you riders on this board are just evil, sadistic, and controlling who beat their horses and rip their faces off, just so you can win in competition. Now that I think about it, competition is evil.

                              Ala one guy's postfor real!!!!)

Some may offer a defense for superficial fashion over safety, but in spite of the creative language, commitment to unconsciousness, and other childish patterns, the fact remains that there are sports with mortality rates and those without. As eventing moves toward just another commercial specialty, with the vast majority of participants riding at the lower levels, it is not surprising that we see the influx of the kinds of attitudes so common in segments like Hunter/Jumpers.

The fact is a spoiled entitle brat is a spoiled entitled brat in a show ring or on an event course. I realize this fact disturbs some, but personally I do not care. I’m interested in the riders who what to really ride, the ones that don’t need the affirmation of the right clothes, the trendy equipment, or the flashy horse. So if I have offended you, simply consider that I am not addressing you, because I am not. I don’t waste my time on brats. If I have not offended you please consider that you are the future hope of equestrian sport. There exists a tradition of riding that is centuries old, one of true horsemanship. This tradition has no interest in trends, self importance and glory beyond that of the horse’s performance. It is about substance. In the final analysis brats lack substance and therefore they cannot continue the tradition of excellence I horsemanship. They are therefore useless to equestrian sport, and everyone but themselves.

I hope I make myself clear.

Also what is "excellence I horsemanship"? My trainer has never mentioned that... does this mean I need a new trainer? Or is my horse supposed to know?

And if you do ride, its gotta be bridless and bareback. Because bits (and spurs and whips of COURSE) are evil. I learned THAT on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXR_S...elated&search=

In fact, all you riders on this board are just evil, sadistic, and controlling who beat their horses and rip their faces off, just so you can win in competition. Now that I think about it, competition is evil.

Sorry... didnt mean for that. What I meant with that clip was that there are some people that take the bits/bridle issue to the extreme (like the person who made that clip, who obviously only used the worse pictures she could find, for shock value). They then take that and turn it into a crusade... bits are bad. While I could easily find 100s of pictures of a horse using a bit that is perfectly happy. Not saying the video doesnt make me a little disgusted--they did a good job doing that--but the person who made it is really the annoyance because they wish to portray all riding like that, and its not. Then those that are easily impressionable believe that all us riders are mean people who hate our horses. Just look at some of the comments below it.

Just use fishing line to tie your boot to the stirrup leather. That way when the horse goz fast you will be secure and keep your stirrups and you wont have to be skeered of falling off. I don't know if gags are allowed in WP. I'd go with a o-ring snaffle, but add some barbed wire to the mouthpiece so the judge won't see. Maybe your horse is upset because you do not have enough silver on your saddle???? Try speaking to him in Spanish, it works for the grooms.
