Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Jumpers in MA and CT, where are you?

    Hi all,

Some of you may know that I am the show manager for Mount Holyoke. I have been running jumper shows for five years now. The first two years were out of sight attendance wise. We would have 30 - 40 entrants per division. Four divisions with three classes each = 12 classes for the day and we would start at 9 a.m. and finish around 6 p.m. Big A show barns would come as well as Pony Clubbers, eventers, backyard folks, local lesson stables etc.

Then year three, we had some setbacks. The economy was just starting to turn, we lost a big sponsor, I was on maternity leave, attendance was going down and we took a hard look at what we could do to salvage these fun shows. So, we lowered entry fees, changed some height divisions, played around with the schedule, reduced advertising (our single highest expense) and yes...took out prize money.

Then last year, we really asked our competitors what they would like to see for changes (if any) to come to our shows. We got some great feedback...add some prize money back, put in a lower division, make all classes single round to keep the day moving (the best suggestion ever!), have some shows on Sundays and some on Saturdays. So, we did. We have what I feel is the best class list we've ever had. We put in a stakes class in each division. Still give out great prizes/awards. Got some great sponsors who give us gifts in kind as well as $$$ to help defray running costs and still we are losing our shirts with each one.

This past Sunday, we had a well publicized show...sent out over 300 postcards with the prize list printed right on them. I had 6 in the first division, 8 in the second (2'6" - usually a HUGE division) 6 in the third division and 5 in the last division. Ouch.

I realize the economy has slowed many down from hitting so many shows but ours are HIGHLY reasonable, with excellent footing, jumps, courses, prizes etc. The biggest factor that I can think of that we have done in the past few years is to cut out advertising in Yankee Pedlar, Steed Read and Equine Journal. We DO have the shows listed in all those calendar listings as well as Equinesite and USEA Area I. Tell me...do you read those aforementioned horse journals and pay attention to show ads? Would that make a difference? The cost of advertising is very, very high and I was positive we could cut that from our show budget but now I am not so sure.

Interestingly enough, most of our competitors of late are coming from New York, NH and VT with some from deep in the middle of CT. Where are you Mass??? Where are you CT border (Granby, Windsor, Enfield???). What can we do to convince you to come??? Thanks for reading!

I never knew you ran jumper shows. You probably send out post cards to people who have attended in the past, so newcomers or people that have not attended your shows in the past do not have a clue what you offer. And I am guessing that our barn does not know what you offer either.

Do you run other divisions on the same day to encourage barns to come or is it just jumper classes? Most barns are busy trying to get kids some equitation points/qualified at some local shows and so if there is a variety of classes - a variety of people will come.

    Just my two cents.

Yes maybe if you added the Medals, such as NEHC, MHJ, MHC, CHJA, CHSA you would get more entries. (Some people like having a medal course that is more than a hunter course with a rollback thrown in! Like me!!)
Also, I've never seen your prize lists but are you affiliated with local show associations? I know people at my barn were cutting back on shows and only going to ones that had all of thee associations they were trying to get points for so that they could show less.

I haven't been to the jumper shows, but I went to the last hunter show and we had a lot of fun. It was nice to go to a low-key, inexpensive show that was WELL RUN with really nice facilities and judges. I think it's just a matter of getting the word out better. I didn't even know about the hunter shows until someone else mentioned it to me, but now that I do know, I plan on going to others this year.

Have you considered creating your own mail list of local (for example, within 100 miles) farms? With a little time/effort you could probably put together a decent list just by checking out Steed Read, Yankee Pedlar, etc. Then use that mail list to send a detailed prize list/info sheet. If an entire farm knows about the show, chances are more people will hear about it and be interested. I know when we get fun prize lists in the mail we'll post them on the bulletin board. To make it even more appealing, you could offer prizes for trainers (anything from "high point trainer" to "bring four students and you ride for free"). I think making it appealing to the trainers might help. And of course prize money always works I know a girl at my barn who does jumpers and she prefers to go to shows with prize money (when given a choice). She didn't even know about your shows, and she's ALWAYS looking for good jumper shows. She knows now because I told her about them a couple weeks ago, so you may have one more "central CT" rider next time. You could also partner with local equine organizations/rescues to have a benefit class or something like that. It would be free advertising to their members/supporters if you were able to come up with an idea. Good luck!

Do you have 2 indoors? If you added the equitation, I'd bring kids all winter long!!! I bet it beats the Pines!

I would attend next year, for sure! Send out a card to all farms in the area...Nh too! I only know about local shows via my trainer or the locall BB....

ETA: I agree that we need more jumper shows. I have been out of the HJ loop, riding pleasure, but I have the itch and the means...I dont care about prize money at ALL....I just want to show!

I'll come!!! Didn't even know they were going on. Is there a prize list online? I'll definitely come if there's a cooler to be won! Its my goal this year to win a cooler lol. I'll ask the rest of my barn as well.

You should try doing some of those fun classes. Classes like 6 Bar and Tandem Courses and Gamblers Choice and Pick Your Own Line and Nations Cup have been HUGELY popular around here. Of course, they're money classes but they're also much more difficult than just a regular course.

Show attendance is down every-where. I heard the Pines doesn't run jumpers. I got a prizelist from them the other day that they did add the WIHS Eq class on fridays starting with their December shows. They at least have a decent sized warm-up ring, good place to take greenies.

For those of you wondering about the prize list, here's the Website: http://www.mhcriding.com/section.asp?section_id=17

The hunter prize list is also on this page about halfway down.

I think Mt. Holyoke is much nicer than the Pines. And the prices are a LOT better, especially if you're interested in schooling a green bean horse or rider. Plus, they do have good prizes. I was champion in the eq at the last show and they give away nice SmartPak quilted pads. I'm definitely going back in the hopes of getting a cooler at the end of the series

My ONLY suggestion would be to ask people in the schooling area to be a little more considerate when they are just standing around waiting for a class. When I went, half the schooling ring was blocked by loads of people just standing (on horseback and on foot). They should all stand and wait near the in/out gates - not in the middle of the schooling area.

I haven't made it to your shows yet, but I want to point out that I've been at many local barns and never seen a flyer for any of your shows on any bulletin board, ever. I'm not sure how I found out about them in the first place, to be honest! So send out flyers/prize lists to all the local barns (Stillwater, Stone Pony, Xenophon...they all have lesson programs full of kids/adults who'd love a low-key show) and that should expose you to more people.
