Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • I need a new saddle!!! Advice?

Hi i'm new here, and i need saddle advice!!! I need to get a new saddle because the one i have now no longer fits me or my horse. I mostly ride the Medal and the Eq so i was looking for a close-contact saddle. People have told me to look at the Henri de Rivel close-contact saddle are these any good? Also i really like the look of the Bates close-contact saddle but i've heard that they can ake it difficult to sit the trot. And then there is the Pessoa Eq saddle i haven't heard much about these but they look really nice and like the seat is very good. Any other brands or models that you guys might suggest?
Thank so much, I look forward to reading your responses.

What is your budget? That will determine your saddle. Also, what saddle do you ride in now that does not fit your horse?

i recently just went through the process of buying a new saddle...and it is a process!!
i honestly really hate HDRs i think there a way for ppl to get a saddle with a brand for the least amount of money!
I have a Pessoa A/O. i show equitations and medals as well but i dont really no much about the Pessoa Eq so i cant help u there
i tried a Beval Stamford and it was really comfortable and fit me well but it didnt fit any horse i put it on!!! idk about the other Bevals i do no ppl who have them and like them.
Depending on how much u want to spend i recomend a County! i sat in some and loveddd them very comfortable and a lot of ppl at my barn have them. but they can be expensive and have to be bought online.
Stubbens are really nice aswell! i tried one and loved it
i also tried a Cliff Barnsby i liked it a lot but the tree was veryyyy narrow and didnt fit anybody. i also tried the prestige hunter classic but the tree was made out of something like metal and wasnt very well made in my opinion.

i recommend riding in friends saddles and trying out different ones to find the best fit! saddle shopping is a process, take ur time to find the one that works beest for you and ur horse

But for the OP, you can search the COTH board for all kinds of saddle threads. Good, bad and so so. Just type, for example, Pessoa into the search box.

With that budget, you can buy a very nice used custom. That is the way to go. The quality, durability, and balance of most custom brands is incredible. I bought a used County Stabilizer in very good condition for $1650. County saddles would be my suggestion, but CWD, Beval, Antares, and Hermes are also exceptional brands. Try ebay or local tack shops that sell used saddles.
Before I bought my County, I wasnt too keen on the idea of buying used, however, it was a very smart choice IMO. You get unbeatable quality that cant be found in off the shelf saddles for an off the shelf price.-if that makes sense

Do you want "lots of saddle"-- deep, knee rolls, etc or "a little saddle"-- flatter, less in front of your leg?

How easy or tough is it to fit you horse? Or will you ride multiple horses in this?

Do you care if it's used or do you really want new?

I do like having a little more knee roll. The saddle will be used on 3 different horses but they all have wide withers. I would prefer new but used is alright.
Are there any good websites that sell quality used saddles?

Exactly. I have to translate enough of that in real life.

For the OP: In the $2000 range you can get a pretty dang good saddle, MUCH better than the ones you have listed, either new or used.

I'd look used first, personally, because you can get more saddle for your money. Devoucoux, Antares, Butet, CWD MAY be found for $2000 used if you look hard. I got my Antares for that price, and its great

Other used options depending on your build and ponies conformation are the Amerigo Vega, Jaguar, Beval Natural, Prestige Nona Garson Elite, County Stabilizer, etc.

If you are going new, I'd consider the BdH or Beval Salem. The new Pessoas are of questionable quality- the one I saw was not terrible but I am not certain of the model.

also, if you go to the CWD or Antares website, they have links to Used saddle websites.

                          and highendusedsaddles.com

also ask ppl at ur barn (thats how i got mine!) or at horse shows if they have a saddle they are trying to sell. then u get the advantage of being able to ride in it b4 u buy.

                            Fine Used Saddles
CWD/Beval/Antares/Devoucoux also have used saddle sites.

This is another one of things that there are a million threads about! A search is definitely in order. There is also eBay or the Bits and Barter Board, or the COTH classifieds.

OP, did I miss where you said what you've currently been riding in? You say that these three horses have wide withers. What else is notable about their backs? Do they have big shoulders? Big ribcages? Do they have a big wither with a lot of slope, or are they more "pony-backed" with less of a wither to worry about? Will any one of them need a wide tree? How about your build--are you long, short, or average from hip to knee and from knee down?

What I would do if I were in your shoes is go down to a good tack shop that sells a lot of saddles and tell them about your horses and what you are looking for. They can give you a hand figuring out what saddle will best work for you, and then you can look at what fits your horse. If I were you I would look into a high-quality used saddle; that way you get more saddle for your money and, as an added bonus, you don't have to break it in. (I would especially go this route if you get a saddle with grain leather instead of a high-end calf; grain is more slippery and takes longer to break in.)

I am not personally a fan of the HdR saddles; I think they are slick to sit in, and they do not fit me. I know many people who are happy with them, however. Also not a fan of the Bates saddles, partially because I've heard a lot of opinions on the air panels and not all of those opinions were positive, but also because most of the people I know who have them are not put in a good seat by them.

I love Beval and think they make a great saddle. Their World Cup is possibly the best saddle I've ever sat in, although it will not do for a horse that has a big wither (although you may have better luck with the newer World Cup Gold, which has more space for a wither; new, the WCG is just under $2k.) The Beval Natural comes very highly recommended; everyone that I know who has one loves it, although it does not seem to be a good saddle for a wide, round back. (You can easily find Naturals in good condition for under $2k.) The Limited model is a lovely saddle which in my experience does well on a horse with not a lot of curve to its back and a moderate wither. It is not uncommon to find a Butet in good condition for right around $2000 (I bought my old Butet for $2200, replaced the billets, and sold it three years later for the same price.) These saddles seem to be fairly hit or miss with how they fit, although to me they are a good Thoroughbred fit with allowance for withers. Do some research on serial numbers before you order a trial one, though; Beval will help you out if you call, but different models may have different panel configurations.

If you manage to find a used Antares for around $2000 (which is do-able, although I haven't seen many out there) you will have found a very good saddle. My old Antares fit every horse in the barn except for my own, and I can't fault it for that because there isn't a lot out there that fits mine really well.

I saw that Pirateer recommended the BdH saddle. My sister has one, and she has been very happy with it. You may have trouble darkening it to havana, but it is very happy to be a pretty chestnut color--just fine on a chestnut or a reddish bay, but you may want it darker. It sits well on her skinny Thoroughbred with a shark-fin wither, although when his topline declines she needs to use a wither cutout pad to compensate while she works to improve his back.

The Amerigo Vega saddle also got a mention here. Amerigo makes a really nice saddle. The new Vega that I demo'd had a LOT of padding through the shoulder and is possibly not suitable for a horse with a big shoulder and lots of muscle, although your mileage may vary. I have found all the Amerigos I've sat in to be well-balanced and very comfortable.

You mentioned Pessoa. Older Pessoas are better than newer Pessoas in terms of leather quality.

Another one you could look into is the Crosby Centennial, which comes in multiple flap configurations if you are a hard fit.

                              Good luck!

I recently purchased a Beval natural saddle that I LOVE. I got it during Beval's sale (I think it was in February) and I was lucky enough to find a demo version of exactly what I wanted. I have really long legs, so I loved that I could get long/forward. I also like you wanted to have a bit more knee roll so I got a deep seat (which isn't too deep at all), and front blocks. It arrived the day after I ordered it in perfect condition, plus the people at beval are so nice and helpful! I ride a big hanoverian who is fairly wide in the withers and it fits him really well.
Good luck in your search! I know finding the right saddle can be difficult!

You are getting some great recommendations here.

I second Renn that a Beval World Cup Gold is really a wonderful saddle for the money. It is slightly flatter though. If you do want a flat saddle, that, the Beval Devon and the Tad Coffin are my personal favorites.

For your budget, you could also potentially find used Tad Coffins, CWDs, Butets, Devoucouxs, and PJs. It might take some looking, but they're out there.

My current saddle is an Ashland II which I love. I have had two. My mom has a Butet and we also have a 20 yr. old Butet for schooling which we found for 300. I would recommend any of these. We bought all of them used.

I bought a BdH special edition new for $800 from dover becuase they were having a closeout but they have the special and regular edition in the catalogue now for about $1500...im pretty sure its less....I tried a Bates and i HATED it.. I felt like it put me in a chair position and I was stuck and couldnt really adjust my position well..some people love them though....I would really recomend calling Beval stores and asking about their used saddles...they have really nice used saddles in your price range....You could get a really high end saddle used in the price range if you look hard enough....but I would definetly recomend my BdH..its fabulous! the style and quality of it is closer to a $3000 saddle...it has a knee role and thigh/ calf blocks which are just enough but I dont feel locked in or anything...the seat is a medium depth and really comfy so its good to sit deep in or go into a half seat when you need to...it seems to fit a wide range of horses too which is always helpful!

ETA: ALWAYS test ride before buying to make sure it fits you and your horses...just because someone loves a certain saddle doesnt mean you will too. you might hate it so always try before spending all that money!!
